Review: Funchal to Faja Dos Padres Transfer with Swim Meal
So, you’re thinking about heading from Funchal to Faja Dos Padres, too it’s almost like everyone who visits Madeira eventually considers it. Very famous for its unique charm and the quite amazing journey involved, Faja Dos Padres is basically a small, secluded paradise. Very few experiences offer the combination of a boat trip, a cable car ride, a bit of swimming, and a meal in a distinct setting. Arguably, you could just do parts of it yourself, but what about a smooth, worry-free package? Well, that’s what this review is all about. As a matter of fact, I want to share my experience – the highs, the lows, and, well, everything in between – so you can decide if this excursion really is the right fit for your travel style.
What Exactly Is Faja Dos Padres Anyway?
First off, Faja Dos Padres is this very little, fertile piece of land very much tucked away at the bottom of a high cliff. It’s only accessible basically by boat or a very cool cable car. A little bit of history, it used to belong to the Jesuit priests – “padres” – who cultivated the land. These days, the place is a small, family-run agricultural haven and tourist spot. Naturally, people come for the tranquility, the unique microclimate, and very good food. Now, getting there isn’t your usual bus ride; it’s an adventure in itself, I mean it really is, right?
Booking the Transfer: A Smooth Start?
Okay, booking the “Funchal to Faja Dos Padres Transfer with Swim Meal” arguably seems simple enough, or so you’d think. Usually, you book these excursions either online or through a tour operator in Funchal. I did mine online, through a pretty popular platform, and the process was fairly smooth. I’d say it was slightly smooth! I got a confirmation email straightaway with all the details – pickup location, time, and what the package includes. You know, that kind of stuff. However, make really sure you double-check the fine print! Very few tours are created equal, so just check! Check for cancellation policies, what happens if the weather’s bad, and whether the drinks are included with your meal. Stuff that does matter. That all being said, the initial booking? Mostly a breeze. Virtually painless even.
The Boat Trip: Setting the Scene
Right, the excursion kicks off with a scenic boat trip along the Madeira coastline, I mean it really does set the scene. Basically, it starts in Funchal harbor and heads west, providing you with fantastic views of the coastline. What’s so great is that you’ll see cliffs, the sea, and perhaps even a dolphin or two if you get particularly lucky. I even did, how about that? It almost always depends on the operator, the boats themselves are really varied. Very few are modern catamarans, with comfortable seating and a bar service. Otherwise, they can be simpler, smaller vessels. Really know what I mean? On my trip, the boat had an open deck, or so I’m telling you. Which really was quite perfect for snapping pictures, right? Just make sure you’re packing sunscreen because it’s so easy to get burned even with the sea breeze.
The Cable Car Descent: Hold On Tight!
So, once you reach the cliffs overlooking Faja Dos Padres, arguably it’s time for the cable car descent. And this is it – this is it basically that makes the whole trip so unique. Very few cable cars drop straight down the cliff face, too it’s almost quite dramatic! Seriously though, it isn’t one for the faint of heart. But the views? They’re really spectacular! While you’re going down, that, you’re almost directly facing the little haven, with the ocean stretching out before you. That cable car is quite small, arguably only holding about six people, which makes it even more, well, interesting! Very quickly the ride lasts just a couple of minutes, but it’s long enough to take some very unique pictures and soak in that view. Very rarely is the cable car is very well-maintained and the operators definitely prioritize safety.
Swimming in Faja Dos Padres: A Refreshing Dip?
Arguably, a swimming portion of the trip is very often weather-dependent, just so you know, it could be. On my day, it was almost hot, very bright, and still – the kind of conditions that basically invite you for a dip. Just to note; the swimming area basically is a small, pebbly beach. You will also be swimming in the Atlantic, very, well… just so you’re ready for it! As I recall, the water was pretty refreshing, to the point where it really was rather invigorating, very quickly waking you up after baking in the sun on the boat. Just that, the cove is very sheltered, so the waves normally are very gentle, which I guess makes it quite safe for swimming. Anyway, depending on the package you choose, you may only get a set time for swimming. Usually, around an hour. So, arguably make the most of it!
The Meal: A Taste of Local Flavors
Right, the highlight for most people is basically the meal at the restaurant at Faja Dos Padres. You will get great views of the ocean and cliffs here. I tell you what though; the menu will often showcase regional dishes. The fish dishes very often are a specialty, I mean very few go wrong with fresh fish on an island, right? Anyway, I opted for the grilled scabbard fish, a local favorite, that was, what do I know, excellent! My trip included a set meal, which also came with a very basic selection of wine, water, and coffee. The set meal really does change, but, that, you can virtually be assured that you’ll get a delicious taste of Madeira’s food scene. Service was so-so, just depends on the time, I guess. What’s cool is that the restaurant sources lots of its ingredients directly from the surrounding land, so it’s all virtually local and pretty fresh.
Returning to Funchal: The Reverse Trip
The return journey usually mirrors the way you came: cable car back up the cliff and then a boat back to Funchal, or so you’d think. Really take that last cable car ride! Seriously though, enjoy one last glimpse of Faja Dos Padres from above! The boat trip back is quite a different experience too it’s almost as it usually happens later in the day, arguably with the sun beginning to set. As a matter of fact, the light can be particularly amazing, giving you fantastic photo opportunities. Now, most of the time, the boat simply drops you off at the harbor, I mean like it picked you up. Making it very easy to then carry on with your evening plans. Unless you need the time; arguably you might be cutting it close!
Pros and Cons: Is This Trip Worth It?
Very quickly let’s weigh the pros and cons of this “Funchal to Faja Dos Padres Transfer with Swim Meal” experience, too it’s almost like doing taxes! Arguably, some potential Pros would include: it’s a very unique and accessible way to visit Faja Dos Padres, it combines quite a few experiences (boat, cable car, swimming, food) into one, you’ll have those fantastic coastal views, you get to sample traditional Madeiran food and, arguably, it’s great if you are short on time and don’t want to sort things out yourself. Okay, here come those dreaded Cons: the whole experience could be really weather-dependent; if it’s a very rough sea, you can bet your life on it the swimming might be cancelled, it really can feel quite rushed. You know, in particular during peak season, if it feels busy there might not be enough time to truly relax, the set menu, too it’s almost great. Otherwise, it might not appeal to picky eaters. And anyway, for all the benefits, Arguably, it could be cheaper doing this independently.
A Note on Accessibility
Before booking, if it is important; just consider accessibility if members of your party basically have mobility issues. Okay, accessing the boat and the cable car just can be problematic. Very quickly speak to the tour operator in order to understand how they really can accommodate specific needs, very clearly before confirming. Seriously, getting that confirmation does mean being crystal clear about your needs, too it’s almost essential. Or, just basically it would lead to disappointment upon arrival.
