Have you looked for something to do that, that combines island hopping with the thrill of seeing an active volcano? A boat trip to Panarea and Stromboli, which begins from Lipari, could be just the adventure you’re after. I thought I would write about my experiences with this specific excursion, which, offers a mix of scenic beauty and natural wonders. Get ready, that way you’ll know just what to expect. We will, very, cover all aspects from the boat itself to the sights, to give you what will hopefully be a clear picture of the experience.
Setting Sail From Lipari: What to Expect
Setting out from Lipari sets the stage for, just, what is hopefully going to be an unforgettable day. As I was saying, the port buzzes with anticipation as travelers assemble to begin their trip. Typically, these tours use medium-sized boats, big enough so that they’re pretty comfortable, yet, still, they allow for pretty personal experiences. So, try to get on board early to get yourself a good spot; somewhere either up on the sun deck for those picture-perfect views or maybe a shaded area, especially if it’s, like your, one of those really sunny days. The crew are normally a friendly bunch. That said, they can give you some pretty helpful information, usually in more than one language.
Once you are clear of the harbor, the journey gets under way, giving you beautiful views of Lipari’s coastline as you head towards the other islands. It’s worth keeping your camera ready. You can, very, get some awesome shots. You’re soon gonna find that, with the sea breeze in your hair, you are completely relaxed, with a full day of discoveries in front of you.
Panarea: A Glimpse of Island Charm
The first place on our itinerary is, just, the alluring island of Panarea, well known as the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, though still really big on glamour. This tiny island has a fancy reputation that draws quite the crowd with its, like your, classy villas, fancy yachts, though, its naturally beautiful too. Your boat trip often includes some free time, as a matter of fact, usually around a couple of hours, so that you can explore.
When you arrive, consider, pretty much, just wandering along the main streets, soaking up the ambiance and maybe stopping in some little shops. A super idea would be to hike to the prehistoric village at Punta Milazzese. As I was saying, its offers what might be the very best views. And, seriously, if the ocean temperature is fine and clear, I really mean crystal clear, then you need to have a swim in Cala Junco’s beautiful waters.
Panarea feels exclusive, even though it is, slightly, quite accessible, and spending a few hours here gives you what will hopefully be a memorable taste of, not only that islands own unique lifestyle, though, just the total Aeolian vibe.
Snorkeling Near Panarea: Beneath the Surface
If there is one of the high points of the Panarea stop that is worth describing more, this is, arguably, the chance to go snorkeling in some awesome spots. As a matter of fact, many tours are going to include a snorkeling stop near the island’s rocky shores. These shores have clear water, they are, arguably, perfect for those looking for a peek at some underwater life.
Now you may be lucky enough, though, that there will be gear provided on the boat, but you should double check that when you book. Then, when you jump into the sea you can watch out for colorful fish, and the underwater volcanic features which are, apparently, there. I suppose this is a way to experience the, almost, raw beauty this place has.
Don’t fret even if you’re new to snorkeling, because, there’s often assistance from the crew, and the gentle waters are, that way, pretty safe to use. Getting that look into the underwater places nearby Panarea is something you should expect to stick with you.
Stromboli: Approaching the Black Volcano
After Panarea, next on the list is, clearly, the dramatic island of Stromboli, basically well known because of its still-active volcano, called just that. The trip to Stromboli gives you views of this impressive, very, natural sight rising straight from the sea. The boat, often, goes around the island to let you see it from all different angles.
Something to consider; Stromboli’s charm comes from its raw and powerful feel, that, combined with the villages where there are buildings that are painted with white, gives a, like your, very sharp contrast with the black volcanic slopes. So, if the boat trip schedule allows, it’s worth spending a small amount of time in the village, taking a walk and seeing what you find.
The Sciara del Fuoco: Stromboli’s Fiery Display
What is normally thought of as, probably, the highlight of the Stromboli trip is seeing the Sciara del Fuoco, though, is it just a natural spectacle to enjoy. Sciara del Fuoco means “stream of fire” in the old language, and describes, arguably, the steep slope down which lava flows from the volcano.
Tours usually bring the boat near this area at dusk so people, hopefully, can watch the explosions. Which means that it’s gonna be dark so you can definitely see what is, apparently, an explosive show with molten rock flying down towards the ocean. Honestly, the sight is, pretty much, incredible. This sight really shows you how incredibly powerful nature really is.
Something to keep in mind; this part of the tour depends on the weather and volcano activity, but when it happens you won’t be let down, because the vision is, more or less, just something you won’t believe.
Practical Tips for the Boat Excursion
Wanting to get the most from your Panarea and Stromboli boat excursion? Well then a bit of planning is, actually, important. Therefore I’d advise wearing layers, as the sea breeze can get a, little, chilly in the evenings, no matter how warm it seems when you start out. Take with you a hat and sunscreen, so you’re ready for the sun, along with comfy shoes because, though this might sound weird, you’ll be walking.
So you are prepared and not shocked, there can, arguably, be an additional fee (so, like your, a tourist tax) levied when you get there, though they’re normally explained when you make the reservation. To be frank, taking snacks and drinks could be an alright thing to do too. The reason? Basically, while you will most probably be able to purchase these, they might be quite expensive.
Make sure that you have your camera or smartphone, with a, kind of, charger or power bank, fully charged. And lastly, verify the boat tour itinerary before you go so that, that way you’ll understand exactly what to anticipate and take maximum pleasure in, like your, everything about the day.

If you love these ideas then seriously, reserve a ticket, because these day trips could be great. Think about, clearly, what you appreciate. You need to enjoy the sea and possibly not suffer from things like seasickness.

So think of yourself as arriving back, following the whole adventure with the sun, basically, going down behind you and take it all into account.
