Cao Bang & Ba Be Lake: My Honest Review of the 3-Day Hanoi Tour

I went on it not that long ago, and I figured I’d tell you a bit about how it went, what I enjoyed, plus maybe some things that could have gone a bit better. The Allure of Cao Bang and Ba Be Lake

Cao Bang, really close to the Chinese border, gives you incredible views, with big rock formations plus plenty of green spaces. It’s so different from the crowded streets you see in Hanoi. Ba Be Lake, as part of a park that has the same name, is a big, serene body of water that’s wrapped by dense jungle; it’s really a restful spot. What makes these places so appealing is, arguably, how peaceful they are, basically that the tourism industry hasn’t fully moved in, which means it’s perfect if you are wanting to get away from it all for a little bit. Day 2: Discovering Ban Gioc Waterfall and Nguom Ngao Cave

Day two, yeah, this is the highlight of the tour for many, to be honest! Ban Gioc Waterfall; it’s arguably Vietnam’s most spectacular waterfall, and honestly, pictures really do not do it justice. Getting up close to it and seeing all of the water falling is actually pretty impressive. You have an option to take a bamboo raft that gets pretty close to the falls; just take note that you might get sprayed a bit! Afterwards, you could be checking out Nguom Ngao Cave, not too far away from the falls. The cave comes with crazy rock formations and well-placed lights that really enhance what you are seeing. In a way, touring around these locations can use up almost the entire day, yet in a really good way. So get your walking shoes ready, right?

Day 3: Ba Be Lake – Tranquility on the Water

On the third day, right after Cao Bang, the drive will take you to Ba Be Lake. This part of the trip is much more focused on rest and relaxing, arguably. The very top thing to do here is actually to take a boat trip on the lake. Cruising on the clear water, and you’re just surrounded by lush forests plus steep cliffs? Yeah, that’s hard to beat! You usually get the chance to explore some cool spots surrounding the lake, too, basically like Puong Cave with its bats and Dau Dang Waterfall. Loads of tour options also involve some local homestays in villages located close to the lake; that provides you with a closer look at the local culture. Evenings over there are extremely tranquil; it’s almost a complete change from everything that’s happening back home, okay?

So, where you are staying and whatever food you are having is kind of basic, just so you understand, like more practical than luxurious, that’s all! You’ll see little hotels or guesthouses in Cao Bang, they’ll usually offer the standard needs in regards to hygiene, which means it should be okay to relax properly. In terms of the meals, expect that you will have mainly regional fare that you get in the local restaurants, and I’d actually recommend that you give it a shot. So be brave enough to try what the area’s famous for; you could be surprised. Rice and noodle dishes are very common; of course, the fresh spring rolls are famous, in fact! If you have some diet limitations or allergies, you’ll likely want to let your tour operator know ahead of time; it helps them prepare well enough, okay?

What I Liked About the Tour

Scenic Beauty: The views were fantastic. So being close to those falls plus drifting across Ba Be Lake are actually experiences that I’m going to keep with me.
Cultural Immersion: You’ll have moments where you will meet local people; this really makes a difference for how it feels; there’s so much to the experience besides just watching stuff, yeah?
Well-Paced: While there is loads of traveling, right, it’s organized good enough to allow some flexibility. The tours are usually quick, they let you relax enough between locations, for sure.

Long Drives: To be honest, all those rides, particularly the one on the initial day, can get long and tiring, okay? Perhaps there are other routes with better road situations; then it can make the trips a bit better.
