Bilbao Hop On Hop Off Boat Trip: A Complete Look

When people talk about exploring Bilbao, many pictures spring to mind that paint a picture, maybe like the Guggenheim Museum or those pinxo-filled streets, yet there’s one attraction that so often stays missed: that hop-on hop-off boat trip! So, have you thought that experiencing this Biscayan gem from the water gives, like, a view that puts it in a league of its own? I took the plunge, so I’m happy to share what I thought, offering insights if you are wondering if it’s something that’s right for you.

What the Boat Tour Offers

Bilbao river Nervion

Basically, what the Bilbao hop-on hop-off boat promises is that it allows you to view a bunch of great spots from a cozy spot on the water. More or less, the tour covers some landmarks along the Nervión River, so it acts a little like a floating open-top bus! Instead of traffic, that is, you get gently lapping water; and instead of traffic fumes, often the fresh sea air comes along for the ride.

The Route and Sights

What I saw when taking the tour included views of the Guggenheim, as you might expect, which, seen from the river, truly does give you, arguably, a great camera angle and a fresh perspective. What’s more, it gets you close to the Zubizuri Bridge—that eye-catching white footbridge!—and points out sights you may otherwise just happen to pass, like the University of Deusto and the charming old docks. Anyway, the full loop could be about an hour and a half, yet how long you spend is up to you, seemingly, considering that you are free to get off and back on as often as you please all day. Now that really could be worth the money alone!

Frequency and Flexibility

Very importantly, how often do these boats pop up? Usually, you won’t be waiting too long, maybe around 30 minutes or so, but it does change with the seasons. Like your bus tours, you know, that means checking the schedule is worth it, too, if you are wanting to maximize your time. The flexibility truly helps, seemingly. Want to get off at a spot that looks good for lunch and then catch the next boat later? Go ahead.

The Experience Onboard

I have talked about what the trip is for. So now, what is it *like* being on the boat, anyway? Well, picture this, that is, open air decks (weather permitting, I suppose!) alongside a covered area; seats were rather standard, pretty comfy really. Now, on some of the boats, you, too, might get commentary that gives you the history and background of the places you’re looking at, but, still, don’t count on every trip offering this because I think it comes down to luck. Still, if there is, obviously plug in, as it might give real context to what you’re looking at.

What to Bring

If you think about what you might want for a typical day out, very probably that pretty much covers it! Water is almost a must, really, to keep you hydrated, mostly on warmer days. A hat and sunscreen seem good too, since the sun up there, in effect, knows no bounds. And yes, you will probably want a camera to capture the views. Oh, and in case of random drizzle, probably consider a light jacket, is that not sensible?

Accessibility

You should look into accessibility. Some boats could be better equipped than others in catering for passengers that may need assistance. Getting the information ahead can really save the day. I think this is another key pointer.

Why Choose the Boat Tour?

Is this boat trip, like, actually something for you, maybe given all of Bilbao has to offer, you see? I reckon the biggest selling point has to be the, very special, views; from the river, the architecture actually feels, sort of, grander and gives a dimension the pavement does not offer. Then there’s the chill factor, obviously – gliding along, very much watching the city, arguably beats trudging all over it!

Comparison with Walking Tours

Think of this, walking versus floating! You know, I’m happy to ramble through cities, yet I reckon sometimes it’s nicer to sit and let the sights come to you. Plus, your feet will appreciate it, that’s for sure! And that gentle breeze of the river, well that really does offer respite from any city heat.

Value for Money

Let’s talk value. That sounds really boring but really, when travel costs are at stake, this has to be done! Consider what a typical museum or attraction will charge against the price of this tour; if you’re eager to see loads in just a short amount of time, that hop-on hop-off becomes fairly worthwhile.

Who Will Enjoy This Tour?

So this now begs that big question, is that for whom is it suitable? I’m thinking pretty much anybody, that, but here are some specific examples, that is! People on tight schedules; this almost packs so much of Bilbao into, so few hours, basically! Then there are those with little ones – the boat may give, somewhat, of a break from too much walking, so the kids are happier. And then if you have mobility challenges, like I touched upon before, then that boat allows seeing a lot more a lot easier than the normal city trek would!

Families

For a family, you know, this trip can be great for seeing so much without any stressful long walks or boring queues; and the changing scenery hopefully keeps everybody happy, too!

Solo Travelers

You travel solo? That, then, is something a little different but just as worth the cash! Getting a broad overview of where everything is located might let you then pick locations for checking out in more depth. That sounds fairly canny!

Making the Most of Your Trip

boat trip guide

Here is my guide to boosting this activity to its maximum potential, like! See this as tips gleaned, and hopefully that elevates it to a new dimension.

Timing Your Visit

Check for the best times before your trip. Usually, earlier or later trips keep away from much of the crowds. Plus, a sunset tour? Like, now *that* would make a special end to the day. Obviously weather and water conditions always play a part.

Planning Your Hops

Check out those stops! See if a given stop is going to interest you – that University stop could work really well for architecture fans, by the way. However if modern art is more your bag, jump off somewhere in the Guggenheim’s area; planning hops keeps things fun. I think you are wise to plan!

What if the weather turns ugly?

Like every outside activity it’s fair to consider your plan B! Check refund and rescheduling policies. Plus that covered seating on the boat isn’t an appalling shelter.
