Zanzibar Tour Review: Jozani Forest, Salam Cave, and Mtende Beach

So, you might be thinking about a Zanzibar getaway that blends a bit of wildness, a touch of mystery, and plenty of serene coastline? Mtende Beach, Jozani Forest, and the Salam Cave might be right up your alley. As a matter of fact, I’ve just come back from this exact trio, and here’s the lowdown on what you can, like, really expect, stuff I wish I knew, and even, just a little, what you could possibly skip. Ready? Let’s get into it.

Up Close With the Red Colobus Monkeys in Jozani Forest

Red Colobus Monkeys Jozani Forest

Jozani Forest, is that, actually, a big draw mostly thanks to the super rare Red Colobus monkeys. These little guys, very friendly and just a little bit goofy looking, they exist kinda only in Zanzibar, which is already fairly special. So, too, the forest has guided tours. And I would suggest you grab one. Your local guide has so much knowledge about the monkeys and all plant life that lives within Jozani.

As a matter of fact, getting up close with these Red Colobus monkeys is kinda neat. They’re seemingly unafraid. Maybe even, possibly, they enjoy posing for photos. The forest itself, apparently, has some interesting mangrove ecosystems. Too, there are other creatures hopping about too. Just so you know. You might catch sight of a Sykes’ monkey. Very cautious. Plus bushbabies (although those, usually, are seen at night). So, really, wear decent shoes for muddy trails, pack that insect repellent (the mozzies get busy), and take a moment, seemingly, to breathe deeply and take it all in. It is not just seeing monkeys, it’s that jungle that goes all around you.

The Mystical Salam Cave Exploration

Salam Cave Zanzibar

Right, Salam Cave, which is only a short drive away, anyway, is a totally different experience. Caves always do tend to bring a feel that makes you think of history, or even a good bit of danger. That being the case, this cave does come with a little bit of both. It has important spots of Zanzibari culture.

So, this cave tour, maybe, is not really going to be for everyone. But, that said, inside there might be narrow passages that call for a bit of a scramble. Likewise, the cave can get extremely humid. Just so you know. Also, bring a flashlight, and good shoes is not an optional choice. Even so, the cave itself might have really great geological formations. The views from up the top when you exit might be special as well, it just looks outward, like your watching over an entire space.

Mtende Beach: Paradise Found?

Mtende Beach Zanzibar

And now, onto Mtende Beach. It’s almost what beach postcards look like. The beach apparently shows that it’s well looked after and there are large rocks there for you to get that perfect Insta pic, it could be that spot. The vibe at Mtende, possibly, could be super relaxed. Many days that come down to just yourself, the sand and some calm clear water.

Arguably, the trip is made by walking down the path as that reveals the rock formations. In a way, you want to go at low tide too. I am saying this cause you will see the rock pool when the tide is at its lowest and the beach spreads further outward with white sand as far as the eye can stretch. While, at peak, this can, usually, get busy. It’s worth knowing too, the restaurant on site tends to provide delicious seafood.

Things to Think About Before Your Tour

  • Getting Around: Renting a car tends to be a really great option, offering flexibility. Likewise, taxis and local buses (dala-dalas) are options too, but could take some time and know-how.
  • Best Time to Visit: Clearly, you should pick the dry season (June to October or December to February) to, maybe, stay away from those heavy rains.
  • What to Bring: Just so you know, bring insect repellent (lots), sunblock, swimwear, comfy shoes for hiking and a flashlight for the cave. Oh! Very, very important! Any cash since some of the little outlets aren’t setup for cards.
  • Food and Drink: Make an effort to try local Zanzibari cuisine, very flavourful dishes at local spots. I would mention try sampling fresh seafood directly on the beach!

Is the Jozani-Salam-Mtende Combo Worth Your Time?

Just so you know, is this excursion something that you might remember? If you, arguably, like that a taste for varied things – nature, adventure, and just kicking it on a beach – then you can have something nice here. It all gives enough variety of things that most travellers would get great memories out of it. As I was saying, if you would like some quite time on the beach? This is not, often, going to be that vibe at the peak hours of a peak season.

Very clearly, this Zanzibar combo has it all. So, too, the monkey of the Jozani forest is fun, as are those cave parts and finishing that day with swimming near Mtende beach is special.
