Waqrapukara Tour: Is One Day Enough? Review & Tips

Waqrapukara Tour: Is One Day Enough? Review & Tips

Planning a trip to Peru, are you? Heard about this place Waqrapukara, perhaps? A 1-day tour might sound like a sprint, too short almost, to properly soak things in. I get that. So, I wanted to share my experiences, what it’s like to actually visit Waqrapukara, specifically talking about the 1-day breakfast and lunch tour. This is, in a way, less of a sales pitch and more of a conversation, almost, to help figure out if that type of tour really clicks with you.

What Waqrapukara Is Actually Like

Waqrapukara landscape

Waqrapukara is more than just stones, you know. It’s this old fortress sitting way high in the Andes, more or less. “Waqra” translates to horns, so too “pukara” means fortress in the local language, Quechua, so, naturally the name reflects the jagged, horn-like rock formations that frame it. It used to be that this spot was quite important, both to the Inca and maybe even cultures that came way before them. Is that interesting to you? It offers, almost, amazing views and this real sense of stepping way back into the past, anyway.

I went on one of those 1-day tours promising breakfast and lunch. The kind where everything is organized. In some respects, I’m not much for guided anything. I’m that tourist, you know? Still, getting to Waqrapukara isn’t always easy if you’re not really in the know, just a little. I thought going with a tour, might be the easiest path to getting out there.

Early Start, Early Reward: Breakfast and the Road There

Andes road

Let’s get into it then. The day kicks off real early. Real early. I’m talking maybe 4 AM kind of early. Some companies, I should point out, start later. Most tours start from Cusco, and from there it’s about a three-hour drive to the beginning of the hiking path. In the dark, no less! So you’re drowsy. I will also say this: the road can be a bit bumpy. This kind of trip is more than just something beautiful to look at. You have to commit, you know?

Breakfast is often packed and simple. Perhaps bread rolls with jam, is that right? Plus some fruit and coca tea, the tea being that really common remedy for the altitude. Altitude can affect you in Cusco too. Just remember it’s especially powerful out in the mountains, right? Munching away while seeing the sun come up over those valleys, is just gorgeous to view. Just gorgeous.

Hiking to the Horns: The Path Itself

hiking Andes

The hike itself is generally like, two to three hours each way. So, this may come as a bit of shock: it is not a walk in the park. Very, very little of it is flat! Expect a pretty constant uphill push, mostly, and at an elevation, that too, around 14,000 feet. Gasp. Take your time, like your guide always says, so that you don’t gas out too fast. Plus take time to drink some water. The views though, are absolutely, gorgeous. Worth it, arguably. You get to see these far-reaching landscapes. A bit of time in the highlands, with some llamas looking back at you!

The terrain is varied; you go through dirt paths and parts with rocky ascents too, even seemingly little trails hugging the sides of cliffs. Proper hiking shoes are a necessity, you know? Trekking poles would assist, and you might see some people using them. If it rains, the trails, mostly those rocky bits, can get really slippery, just a little.

Exploring Waqrapukara: Views and History

Waqrapukara ruins

Reaching Waqrapukara, and seeing what it’s like when you arrive, is a big moment, actually. The site’s really made of sections of stone buildings clinging to these high cliffs, like they’re actually a bit of rock, very.

Most tours have a guide. Is that what you want? They share the fort’s story and its importance, in some respects. It has changed through the years, you know. A few believe Waqrapukara may have had importance before the Incas, even seeming a special holy place. As I was saying, The Incas really transformed it, and used it, also as a fortress, that’s basically how it looks now.

So, it’s possible you might roam around these remains, almost. Imagine living here so long ago! Plus snap photos of the sights. Looking out over that cliff edge, to view those valleys running far into the distance, too it’s almost beyond words, almost. And remember: The air is so thin, you’ll likely be huffing and puffing a bit.

Lunch with a View

After seeing the site, usually the tour finds a nice, sheltered spot to stop so you eat lunch, or at the very least take a breather for a bit. So, it might not be fancy. Perhaps a pre-made boxed lunch, that may be sandwiches, fruit, plus a drink. Enjoy it while seeing the views! Really the highlight is that awesome, peaceful feel of dining in such a gorgeous spot, seemingly surrounded by the Andes.

There are also, I’d like to point out, very little in the way of services, for example toilets, seemingly anything up at Waqrapukara, so too it’s really essential to plan. What you pack in, be ready to pack out!

The Way Back and Reflections

What goes up, must go down, that. The hike back may be physically easier. Even if you just allow gravity to do the work! However, your joints may not agree with this assessment! Mostly when you are negotiating rocky parts. Plus you will also be feeling quite worn out after all that trekking. This time on the route may be meditative, that you will view sights a little more, anyway. Also there may be golden light from the afternoon. This illuminates stuff in a new manner, apparently.

Arriving back at that vehicle may have you relieved! A few tours may, or may not, have an additional stop. Just to stretch your legs, I might add! Then you’re doing that long drive back to Cusco. You can maybe rest, if you have that capability! Perhaps think about everything. Looking back now, I just have amazing memories!

Is A 1-Day Tour Worth It?

Waqrapukara overview

So, let’s come back to this: Is that one day Waqrapukara trip something good, very? If your goal is ticking a box, no. If, however, the reason you came is to see pretty Andean spots? In order to feel challenged with some hiking? So to get just a taste of that local heritage? That works.

The one day tour could feel short. Seemingly rushed, mostly. All that journeying eats time. Even the sun is on a schedule! If you aren’t that fit or want some more peaceful traveling, then, is that a good option, do you think? Spend a night closer to the trails. This way it’s possible to take it much easier. More slowly.

Essential Things You’ll Need

travel kit

Tour Company Recommendations

So, the tour operators doing those trips is considerable in number. You can always ask a local travel bureau. However, here is what I found.

  • responses Online: Get insight to tours by looking at people’s opinions. Are responses glowing and thorough? That tells plenty.
  • Sizes to Parties: Just how numerous the party, exactly? Tours that are bigger are economical. Tours that are smaller? That, in turn, are flexible.
  • Tour’s Specific Itinerary: So, can the group alter their plans when the guide needs that? If a place intrigues the party, will their plans let it happen?
  • Are There Inclusions?: Is anything included? It must show the complete payment up front. As I was saying, does a particular company add transport from Cusco to Waqrapukara? So to see lodging that’s affordable when taking days there? The inclusions will be critical during an Andes hiking trek, actually. So you need essentials and you may have to buy a specific package to be happy.
