Venice Lagoon Catamaran Cruise: My Review + Tips

Planning a trip to Venice? So, you are probably looking at various ways to see the city and its beautiful lagoon. A catamaran cruise could be a truly fantastic option, giving you views from the water, a relaxed atmosphere, and often, drinks included! I, too, recently took the “Venice Venetian Lagoon Catamaran Cruise with Drinks,” and I want to share my full experience to help you decide if it’s the right adventure for you.

What to Expect on the Cruise

First off, let’s cover what this cruise involves. Typically, these tours take you around the Venetian Lagoon, showcasing islands like Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Yet, different tours often vary in their specific routes and the amount of time spent at each location, so check beforehand. What’s pretty cool, too, is that many cruises include drinks – typically wine, soft drinks, and water – available throughout the tour.

On my particular cruise, we departed from near the heart of Venice. Almost immediately, the views of the city opening up from the water were spectacular! The catamaran itself was quite roomy, providing spots to sit both in the sun and shaded areas. Anyway, the crew was super friendly and made sure everybody was comfy and had a drink in hand.

We slowly floated past some amazing sights. You know, there was St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, and other landmark spots. It’s neat that getting to see them from the water gave a really different perspective compared to wandering around on foot. A little later, the boat headed toward the islands, and we got to see the unique charm of each.

Island Hopping: Murano, Burano, and Torcello

Okay, Murano is extremely famous for its glassmaking, and we had a chance to watch a glassblowing demonstration. Even if touristy, seeing the artisans create delicate pieces was seriously amazing. Afterwards, there was time to check out some of the glass shops. Though tempting, you understand that I resisted buying too many souvenirs!

Burano, on the other hand, is such a photographer’s dream! All the houses painted in bright colors make for unforgettable pictures. So, walking around this island felt like stepping into a painting. I thought, too, it was fun to get lost in the small streets and appreciate the handmade lace on display.

Then we cruised toward Torcello, which is much quieter and more historical. The island provides a look into Venice’s beginnings with its old cathedral and peaceful atmosphere. Even though there wasn’t as much to “do” here, it felt pretty meaningful to wander around and reflect on the long story of the lagoon.

The Drinks and the Atmosphere

One of the nicest parts of this cruise was the super relaxing atmosphere. Because the catamaran moves smoothly and quietly, it’s a peaceful experience being on the water. You know, adding drinks into the mix helps too! The wine was decent, and there was lots of it.

It’s true that some passengers chatted away. Plenty of others were quietly appreciating the views. So, I discovered a cozy spot on the front of the boat and just enjoyed feeling the breeze and seeing Venice drift by. One little thing, the crew were attentive and helpful, making sure glasses were topped up and answering any questions we had.

What Could be Better

Alright, no experience is totally perfect, right? If I’m honest, the time spent on each island sometimes felt a bit short. I, too, would have liked an extra half-hour or so in Burano to further explore. That said, it’s a taster of each place, allowing you to make a mental note if you fancy returning at a later date.

Something else, the glassblowing demonstration in Murano can be quite busy, with masses of tourists all crammed into one place. Probably try and stand towards the front for a better look. That is, unless you hate crowds, then maybe give it a miss and just head off exploring by yourself.

One further thing, depending on the time of year, it can get pretty hot out on the lagoon. Therefore, remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Also, maybe drink lots of water as well as the included drinks, so you stay hydrated.

Is This Cruise Right for You?

Are you the type of person who would appreciate this particular kind of tour? So, I reckon if you enjoy seeing cityscapes from the water, sipping a drink in a relaxed environment, and hopping between unique islands, you’ll most likely find it a lot of fun! But if you’re on the fence, weigh up what matters to you.

Also, this cruise is very suitable for couples seeking a bit of romance, groups of buddies looking for a laid-back day out, and actually solo travellers (just like myself!) who want to see Venice from a new viewpoint without too much effort. I, too, made a friend on the cruise! Mind you, it might not be ideal if you get bored easily or are hoping for something action-packed.

Basically, a lagoon cruise is a fantastic way to see all that this special place has to offer, it provides a combination of culture, scenery, and relaxation. Plus, it gives those views that you cannot obtain anywhere else!
