Valparaiso Sandboarding & Sunset in Concon: Is it Worth It?

Valparaiso Sandboarding

Alright, so you’re looking into doing some sandboarding near Valparaiso, Chile? That’s pretty awesome, right? Well, like me, you’ve probably stumbled across pictures of these towering dunes at Concon, maybe imagined yourself gliding down them like a pro. Actually, maybe you’ve wondered whether the reality really lives up to the hype. I went to check it all out. Now, I’m sharing my experience – the thrills, the spills, plus a few things that I so wish I had known beforehand. No holding back at all. Here’s the real deal, with some helpful pointers for planning your trip.

Chasing the Dunes: Getting to Concon from Valparaiso

Concon Sand Dunes

First things first, how do you even get to these famed sand dunes? So, getting to Concon from Valparaiso is quite simple. Basically, the most budget-friendly option is taking a local bus. Buses run quite frequently from Valparaiso’s bus terminal. I think the ride itself takes about 30-45 minutes, maybe, depending on traffic, yet it also gives you a chance to see the scenery along the coast. As I was saying, you will want to look for buses that say “Concon” on the front, naturally.

Now, just so you know, there’s another way. That is taxis or ride-sharing apps are, really, more convenient, yet they’ll definitely cost you more. If you’re with a group, the price splits a little more favorably. Just one thing – confirm the price with the driver ahead of time to prevent any surprises, especially because, as you may know, surge pricing could definitely apply during peak hours.

Actually, once you’re in Concon, the dunes are, too, fairly easy to spot. From the main part of town, you could walk. I did, that way I could enjoy the sea breeze and that, or take a quick taxi ride. Just letting you know.

Gearing Up: What to Bring for a Sandboarding Adventure

Sandboarding Gear

Okay, what do you even need to bring to make the most of the whole sandboarding thing? Well, you really do not need tons of specialized gear, more or less, yet some essentials can seriously improve your experience. As a matter of fact, sunscreen is critical. Obviously, the sun reflects powerfully off the sand, and I may have learnt that the hard way. Really.

Also, shades. Too much direct sunlight ain’t nice at all. Even on a cloudy day, so some say, sunglasses are a must to protect your eyes from the glare and blowing sand, yet sunglasses might be enough on a particularly windy day so it seems, which, actually, leads me to the next thing: clothes.

Wear clothes that, I don’t know, you don’t mind getting sandy. Light, breathable layers are ideal, basically allowing you to adjust to the temperature, just a bit. I mean, personally, I would suggest long sleeves and pants. Some people disagree, however this can give your skin some shelter against sunburn and the scratchy sand. That’s one thing, obviously.

One other point, bring water. Too much activity and exposure to the sun means you should really stay hydrated, actually. That said, snacks could also be nice to keep your energy levels up, like yours, really.

Oh, and shoes! I almost forgot. Close-toed shoes are, arguably, better than sandals for sandboarding. Just telling you, sand can get everywhere. However, prepare to dump out your shoes anyway. Too funny. I think.

Riding the Dunes: My Sandboarding Experience

Sandboarding Experience

Let’s cut to the chase. Sandboarding itself – what’s it really like? Well, you know, if you’ve snowboarded or sledded before, you’ll have some kind of sense of it. Yet, it’s its own experience entirely, maybe? So, first, a lot of the local vendors around the dunes, you see, rent out sandboards. You will want to, in fact, look at the board’s condition before renting; arguably, make sure the base is smooth for optimal gliding. That said, they aren’t expensive. Really.

And then you hike to the top, and that, and then, that’s kind of tough. In fact, trudging up the dunes carrying a board is a workout. I tell you, stopping several times to catch my breath wasn’t embarrassing at all. Really. But don’t worry, very much. The view from the top is definitely worth it.

Anyway, time for some thrills. So, the initial run? Arguably, more awkward than graceful. Arguably. Getting your balance on the sand, that is, can be pretty tricky, and expect to fall. Maybe lots of times. The soft landing, too, makes it fun.

With a bit of practice, that is, I started getting the hang of it. Honestly, leaning back slightly and using your edges to control your direction? Seriously the key. Although I did not turn into a pro, as I was saying, I definitely had some fun runs. Like your rides, I presume.

Oh, but be prepared, though, for sand everywhere. Everywhere! Sand in your hair, your clothes, your shoes… you name it. By the end of it, that is, I felt like a human sandcastle. Totally.

Sunset Spectacle: A Perfect End to the Day

Sunset in Concon

Really, one of the best reasons to sandboard in Concon, if you can hang around, arguably, is for the sunset. By the way, as the sun begins to sink into the horizon, it, well, paints the dunes in really incredible shades of orange, pink, and purple. And then, there is just nothing like it.

I’d tell you, I just sat at the top of a dune, then watched the colors change. Definitely serene. Actually, it was the perfect way to wind down after all the sandboarding exertion. A little tip for you, and I mean this. Take pictures. Then brag online later. Just do it.
