Ubud Adventure: Alas Harum, Tirta Empul & More – A Traveler’s Take

Ubud, that spot in Bali, it’s, like, way more than just rice fields and yoga retreats, actually. What you find, if you scratch the surface just a little bit, is this amazing blend of adventure, cultural spots, and just jaw-dropping nature that you won’t find anywhere else, as a matter of fact. So, that you get to experience all the best parts, there are some awesome destinations a little outside Ubud’s central hub, and I wanted to share my experiences and what I thought of Alas Harum, Tirta Empul Temple, Tukad Cepung Waterfall, and Dedari restaurant to give you an inside look, right?

Alas Harum: Coffee, Swings, and Views That Pop

First up on the list is Alas Harum, so it’s a coffee plantation that took things to a whole other level, sort of. Yes, you get to sample all sorts of Balinese coffee and teas – and trust me, do the Luwak coffee tasting because it’s something else entirely – but that’s just the warm-up act, to be honest. The real showstopper? Giant swings hanging over rice terraces that stretch as far as you can see, actually. It’s, like, this unreal feeling of soaring above this green sea. Just, that you know, makes you feel really alive.

You’re strapped into this swing – which, don’t stress, is as secure as can be – and then, boom, you’re flying, is that the general picture. You feel the wind rushing by, that greenery is blurring beneath you, and your stomach does this little flip that is really the best, actually. There’s also the photo ops, which, naturally, are endless, alright? So, this one’s for all you Instagram fans; you could easily spend an entire afternoon snapping pics here because the views are killer.

But it’s not all about the swings, just so you know, because Alas Harum also has these pretty wild “extreme” activities like ziplining, too, if that’s your thing. You also could wander through the coffee plantation itself, spotting how they harvest the beans and learning how they make that Luwak coffee, you know? For families, it’s pretty darn ideal, as there’s something for everyone, I think. You have kids, they can run around a dedicated playground, you can wander those scenic trails, and everyone gets a dose of amazing views, too it’s almost something for all ages.

What I Liked: Those swings and that view were outstanding, honestly, and I felt pretty safe the whole time. That Luwak coffee was quite a memorable experience, and the grounds were pretty beautiful for a stroll around.

Things to Consider: This place can get crowded because it’s pretty popular, alright, so aim to go in the morning. Those activities can get a little pricey, especially if you add them all up, very.

Tirta Empul: Spiritual Cleansing in Holy Waters

Tirta Empul Temple is an incredibly meaningful spot that draws locals and tourists, sort of seeking spiritual purification. Is that to say the experience is beyond words? You should enter the temple, you’ll get a sarong, you know, that traditional Balinese wrap that you have to wear when you are seeing sacred spots, and then you can head towards the pools.

The main event is jumping into one of these pools, that’s pretty symbolic and considered holy, which are fed by a sacred spring, actually. People line up to move beneath these waterspouts and partake in this purification ritual, washing away bad energy and gaining blessings, like your sins are washed away. It’s not just about going through the motions; it’s about experiencing a spiritual reset and understanding that tradition, very. Locals take it pretty seriously, and the quiet atmosphere helps everyone to reflect and connect. Now, you see what’s going on.

A few things to think about, it is always respectful to dress appropriately (shoulders covered) and act modestly. Also, remember that women shouldn’t enter the pools if they are menstruating as a matter of custom, alright? Beyond the purification pools, Tirta Empul also has really well-maintained courtyards and spots to look around, is that the general picture? So you can spend a decent amount of time here looking around this temple and its grounds.

What I Liked: The experience was pretty moving and provided an interesting way to connect with Bali’s beliefs, you know. That temple architecture is great, the whole atmosphere just brings about some peaceful vibes, too it’s almost meditative, alright?

Things to Consider: The purification ritual attracts large crowds, particularly during peak times, very, and some of these waterspouts you can’t get to under local regulations, anyway.

Tukad Cepung: Chasing Waterfalls in a Cave

So if you are all about adventure and hunting down unreal views, I totally suggest you go to Tukad Cepung Waterfall, actually. What makes this waterfall so distinct is that it’s pretty much inside of a cave, just that you know. Getting there involves this little trek through a small jungle and a river that follows in between some pretty high cliffs.

As you get closer, what you find, and as the canyon opens up, you hear the water falling, so you are naturally pumped, literally. You’ll see the waterfall cascading down these rock walls, as light beams through this opening from above, I think. That light hitting the waterfall is quite spectacular and creates these cool photographic opportunities, that is. Make sure to bring shoes that can get wet, alright? Because you have to wade through water and climb over slippery rocks a little bit, naturally. In some spots the water might reach your knees, I guess, or higher.

There’s an awesome feeling of adventure involved in going to Tukad Cepung because of the effort you need to go through to get there and the fact it isn’t exactly out in the open. So it does make it something a bit more special to experience it, alright?

What I Liked: What’s nice about this waterfall, you have a cave to look around and this light bursting through in every direction. You’ve really got to love it, and, to be real, it does set the stage for some amazing photo ops, truly.

Things to Consider: So it may require a decent climb over some rocks, as I pointed out, and can be busy, mostly with people chasing selfies in the most photographic spots.

Dedari: Rice Field Dining with a View

And for somewhere you can kick back and grab some pretty awesome food in Ubud, you ought to visit Dedari, you know, and what’s awesome is that the atmosphere sets the bar really high here. This restaurant is in this awesome place that offers views of some stunning rice fields. Picture this, enjoying a fresh meal as that breeze runs through the field and you get that lush vista around you.

What makes Dedari really good is the food. Their menu is quite a tribute to all that the Indonesian cuisine has to offer. If you want classic flavors from Bali or other parts of Indonesia, you might want to taste their nasi goreng or some traditional satay, right? Everything is made from scratch from organic ingredients and they add modern tastes for the sake of originality.

This restaurant’s got an outdoor seating area to amplify that breathtaking vibe of that landscape, or, you can huddle up in more intimate spaces of its indoor areas. They’ve got romantic evenings for couples looking for some downtime as well as sizable rooms where a whole bunch of friends or a family get together, isn’t that great?

What I Liked: Dedari has got to be one of those stops that sets you at ease while serving awesome meals. Its location simply can’t be compared because it brings you to that peaceful, scenic Balinese state of mind in mere seconds, could be. It’s amazing that the menu lets you see Indonesia’s best cuisines while sourcing its components straight from mother nature.

Things to consider: The food rates higher, or so it may appear, than regular diners across Bali might anticipate, very, which isn’t necessarily bad, more or less.

There is lots to explore around Ubud, such as, and especially, Alas Harum, Tirta Empul, Tukad Cepung, plus Dedari.
