Tsavo Safari Review: A 3-Day Adventure in Kenya’s Wild
Okay, so, picture this: the African savanna stretching as far as the eye is able to see, with that brilliant sun beating down and the distant roar of lions kinda echoing in the air. Basically, that’s what you could look forward to on a 3-day safari to Tsavo East and West National Parks in Kenya. Actually, I went on that trip and it was literally like stepping into a nature documentary. Seriously, it was that wild. This review gets you kinda up close and maybe personal with this intense adventure, talking about the landscapes, the animal sightings, and what you should actually think about when you map out your own adventure.
First Impressions of Tsavo East
In fact, Tsavo East is really well known for its wide-open spaces and kinda reddish soil, really making it a photographer’s dream. Very quickly after driving through the park gates, it almost feels like we got greeted by these herds of elephants covered in red dust – basically, picture postcard stuff! Seemingly, it really felt as though we saw lots of those striking animals against the sparse vegetation which kind of makes spotting wildlife there rather easier. And I will say, our guide knew his stuff, easily spotting different birds and, that being said, explaining their behavior. Basically, we managed to grab these fantastic photos that almost look professional of a martial eagle soaring overhead, which to be fair I would never have spotted on my own. This first leg really confirmed that this safari, was going to be something that was very impressive.
Journey to Tsavo West
Next, we transitioned to Tsavo West, really offering something that was completely different terrain from its sister park. Now Tsavo West feels more dramatic, and so much more rugged, because there are volcanic landscapes and rolling hills. Right away you may notice the scenery really does feel more lush here and very varied, because it’s really full of things such as dense woodlands and serene springs, that seemingly create a different setting for viewing wildlife. Mzima Springs really stands out because it is such a natural wonder, offering clear pools where you can, potentially, see hippos and crocodiles swimming beneath the surface from an underwater viewing chamber – yeah, you know, obviously safely! That was honestly quite amazing, almost surreal to observe these gigantic animals below the water surface. Actually, the entire experience there felt different, a change in feel from the wide savanna of Tsavo East, adding depth to the safari.
Wildlife Encounters and Sightings
You know, one of the top highlights of the safari really were the pretty close animal sightings. Clearly, lions are quite the stars of the show. That being said, witnessing a pride resting lazily under the shade of acacia trees really felt kind of special. Basically, there are more animals besides lions, you know! So, giraffes seemingly grazed peacefully on the taller trees, while you could arguably watch zebras moving across the plains in fairly big herds. And that’s before I even get to the smaller things. Like baboons. They seemed very curious and a little bit cheeky, always, that being said, adding a comical twist to our travels. So the park boasts a pretty varied bird population, too it’s almost every bird-watcher’s dream destination. Actually, keep a look out, because you can spot everything seemingly ranging from brightly colored kingfishers, right the way through to larger birds of prey, easily soaring high above. I was definitely using my binoculars almost all the time so that I wasn’t going to miss anything.
Accommodation and Lodging
In some respects, choosing where to stay on a safari is likely as important as the parks you are going to see. Right, we had chosen lodges both just outside of and inside the park, both were rather good choices, seemingly adding a bit of comfort without losing out on feeling close to the bush. Usually, the lodges feature that unique mixture of that rustic appeal and fairly functional features. As a matter of fact, the lodges themselves had all of the amenities we would need for comfort – you know comfy beds, nice showers, really clean, and things. You know, and actually rather importantly air conditioning. One element that made the experience extra special was just kicking back by the lodge swimming pool right after our daytime drives, really offering somewhere amazing to decompress as we thought back about that day’s discoveries. That said, dinner, in that case, was often served al fresco, basically, allowing us the chance to revel in that background noise of the African bush come nighttime.
What To Pack
You know, thinking about packing the right gear, that being said, this makes all the variation in the quality of the adventure. Obviously, neutral-color garments should be your default decision, to minimize upsetting animals, with those long sleeves and pants to basically keep the sunshine and insects far away. You might be interested in bringing some high-quality binoculars, just that, you know, you can take the clearest sightings from a distance, plus I can’t really recommend it more, than a good quality camera to grab every amazing minute of the trip. Don’t, don’t, DON’T overlook basics that include things such as sunscreen, that is that insect repellent, and those really necessary things to have like a hat and sunglasses that will really protect from harsh conditions. Comfort becomes king regarding footwear, and also very tough, sturdy walking boots is that, which might be your very best bet particularly when going on walking safaris or tours. I would recommend packing some zip-lock bags too it’s almost a way to safeguard electronic gadgets against the ubiquitous dust.
Safari Guide Expertise
Without any doubt, the tour guide can make or break the entire experience. You see, our guide knew virtually everything, really was trained with years of involvement in the bush. You see, his experience easily allowed us to get great sightings of a bunch of creatures that we probably would have missed. Then there is, I mean their passion that helps, because our guides, very keen vision helped spot distant or camouflaged creatures with ease. Furthermore, the guide basically shared amazing information regarding the animals, plants, together with that local environment that literally filled up and enhanced our understanding and appreciation for what we were witnessing. His, actually I mean his abilities just weren’t purely about spotting creatures: he was also super alert on security rules and making certain that we adopted sustainable travel routines, that really made him an invaluable section of the experience.
Considerations for Planning
Basically, whenever considering your 3-day safari of Tsavo East and West, so you have to think about quite a lot of practicalities to actually get everything in place to give you a relaxing trip. We had found that deciding on the correct timing for travel really depends on your specific preferences: the drier months are definitely, usually preferable for animal sightings as creatures converge around limited water sources, whilst you get some quite lush scenery in those rainy seasons. Usually, you need to try to schedule as soon as you can, that being said to get those accommodation options and tours locked in and to take benefit from discounts or better deals. Actually, get a grasp of those options available around your parks and consider what your priorities will be, just so you ensure you are not let down about those specific must see spots and things you need to do. Very likely you’ll need those travel visas and suggested vaccinations way ahead of time to simply steer clear of last-minute complications.
