Tbilisi, Jvari & Mtskheta Day Tour Review from Kutaisi

Tbilisi Cityscape

Thinking about doing a day trip from Kutaisi to Tbilisi, Jvari Monastery, and Mtskheta? Well, it’s almost a trip that hits all the main highlights of eastern Georgia in one fell swoop. So, it’s understandable you’d want to pack it all in, if you’re short on time. I recently did one of these group tours, and I want to share what the experience was really like, so too you can decide if it’s the right thing for your travel plans. Let’s take a peek at what you can expect.

What to Expect from the Group Tour

Group Tour Bus

Okay, so these tours generally start bright and early, usually around 8:00 or 9:00 AM in Kutaisi. It’s almost always a minivan or a small bus that picks you up. Be prepared to make a couple of stops at different hotels to pick up other travelers; it’s almost a necessary part of the beginning of a group thing, of course. Then, that drive to Tbilisi is usually around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, I guess.

Once you get to Tbilisi, the tour usually starts with a walk through the Old Town. It tends to include places like Freedom Square, maybe the Bridge of Peace, and a look at the quirky clock tower of the Gabriadze Theater, or something similar. You can count on plenty of photo opportunities. Many tours also include a ride up to Narikala Fortress by cable car, which gives you amazing views of the entire city; very scenic, clearly. Lunch isn’t usually included, that is. However, they generally give you some time to find a place to eat on your own. Tbilisi is bursting with restaurants and cafes, so that part is not too difficult, actually.

Jvari Monastery: A Spiritual Stop

Jvari Monastery Georgia

The trip to Jvari Monastery is very brief and, some might say, extremely scenic. It tends to sit on top of a hill overlooking Mtskheta, offering amazing panoramic views where the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers join together; is that not a sight to behold?. It’s a place with serious historical meaning; the monastery dates back to the 6th century. You will usually get about 30-45 minutes here to take in the sights and snap some pictures; a picture-perfect spot for sure.

Mtskheta: Georgia’s Ancient Capital

Mtskheta Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Mtskheta is very calm and packed with so much history, as it was Georgia’s ancient capital. The tours usually focus on Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which, in a way, is a major religious center. This is where many important relics are housed; its walls have witnessed significant historical moments. You usually get around an hour or so to explore this little place. Then, after your time there, the group heads back to Kutaisi.

The Good and the Bad

Pros And Cons List

The good bits? It’s almost an easy way to see a lot in one day, basically. You won’t have to stress too much about transportation or planning. Plus, group tours are pretty cost-effective. You are sharing the cost of transportation and a guide with others.

What could be better? Well, the schedule tends to be pretty packed. That doesn’t leave a great deal of room for spontaneous exploration or to linger in places that capture your interest. The time in each location might feel rushed. Plus, you’re at the mercy of the group’s pace and interests, which might not align with yours, of course. If you like going with the flow, this will be restrictive. Also, those longer bus rides can become tiring.

Is this tour for you?

Travelers on the Road

So, this tour is, I suppose, really ideal if you’re short on time and want a taste of Tbilisi, Jvari, and Mtskheta without doing a great deal of the planning yourself, actually. If you like a more independent pace or deep immersion into the destinations, you could very well feel a bit restricted, actually. In that case, it might be worth renting a car or hiring a driver so you have the flexibility to linger where you like. Or, stay overnight in Tbilisi or Mtskheta. It all boils down to what kind of trip you’re hoping for.
