Tall Ship Sailing: My Day Trip in the Bay of Islands – A Review
Okay, so you’re thinking of experiencing a full day of tall ship sailing in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands? That’s fantastic! It’s almost a really unforgettable adventure, that’s for sure. Very recently, I took this trip myself, and now, I want to give you like, the lowdown, almost a review, so you know exactly what to expect. Basically, I hope it helps you decide if it’s the perfect thing for your next holiday.
Setting Sail on a Classic Vessel
The tall ship is a beauty, to start. You see, it’s a replica of a traditional schooner, which certainly gives you a sense of sailing history. Arguably, it’s more than just a boat; in some respects, it’s like a living museum. I remember stepping onboard and, like, being immediately transported back in time. Actually, you kind of imagine pirates might’ve sailed on something pretty similar, you know? It’s almost as if the creaks and groans of the wood have so many stories to tell. Even if they don’t. They seem like they should, in a way. The crew, by the way, are very passionate, you know? Very passionate about the ship, and, that, is obvious almost straight away. Also, they’re all too happy to share some tales of the sea with you.
You have the option, too, to get involved with the sailing, which is quite exciting. If you like, that is. Arguably, you can help raise the sails or take a turn at the helm. Also, you’re pretty welcome to just sit back and relax on the deck. Still, soaking up the scenery is enjoyable too, of course. The choice is pretty much entirely yours. Actually, I tried my hand at raising a sail – wow, what a workout! Yet, feeling the ropes in my hands, while the ship responded to the wind, was so rewarding. Yet, it’s still like nothing beats just chilling out on deck, yet with a cold drink, with the sun on your face.
Exploring the Bay of Islands’ Beauty
The Bay of Islands, almost like the name suggests, very is made up of around 144 islands, which actually makes for pretty stunning scenery. Pretty picturesque, too. By the way, each island apparently, has its own charm, in fact from sandy beaches to secluded bays, and then lush forests. Very many opportunities for snapping great photos! The cruise is like a relaxing way to see the best of it, you see, and so, the ship drops anchor in a sheltered bay for lunch. Or sometimes for a swim.
Now, the swimming is great because, obviously, the water is very crystal-clear and refreshing, really just what you expect, in a way. Also, you have the option to explore some of the islands by kayak, as well, or go for a paddleboard. Then, a guided bushwalk is also available for the more adventurous. So, I decided to go kayaking around one of the smaller islands, and, honestly, the peace and quiet of it, in some respects, was unreal. Only broken by the sound of birds. Apparently, in the distance, that is. It was certainly something I’ll almost remember for ages. I reckon.
Lunch and Refreshments Onboard
Food can make or break a trip, isn’t it, and that’s true here as well, yet I am glad to say the lunch provided, actually on the tall ship, didn’t disappoint, I think. Usually, you get a pretty tasty buffet with lots of options, such as salads, that are quite fresh, plus cold meats, a selection of breads. Pretty delicious, as a whole. Then they often have fruit, that’s good, too. Still, if you have any special dietary needs, tell them when you book, you know? Actually, that will make life simpler. Seemingly, they’re pretty good about catering for most things. During the whole day, also, refreshments are like available. Tea, coffee, water, that type of stuff. Although, some of the other drinks you obviously have to pay for.
Sitting down on the deck, meanwhile, with my lunch, enjoying like, the breathtaking view, just felt like the most perfect way to spend an afternoon. Like honestly! I mean, can you imagine anything more wonderful, almost, than that? Basically, it’s simple food. And yet, the freshness and the setting combined to make it, in fact, such a memorable meal, even just sitting there by you, and I found a little friend! No not a real person – it was a stray kitten who made their way from my accommodation to the boat.
Wildlife Encounters in Their Natural Habitat
Okay, so the Bay of Islands is pretty rich in marine life. So, that also, offers plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. On my trip, still, we were so very lucky and we actually saw dolphins swimming right alongside the ship! Actually, there is nothing like the sight of these very graceful animals, yet playing in the waves. The crew, they seemed pretty knowledgeable about the local wildlife, that they were, so they were very good at pointing out different species of birds, too, almost as well as the dolphins.
Of course, there is never any guarantee, you see, that you’ll see any marine mammals. Apparently, they don’t always play ball, or should I say, swim by! That being said, even if you don’t spot the dolphins, still, you’ll like enjoy seeing various seabirds and other marine life. Pretty much everywhere. If the boat has underwater viewing equipment. Also, then that brings the sea to you as well, to a point. Also, I almost felt a bit like a wildlife explorer, that I did, yet watching those dolphins. Very special. It’s all an experience you’ll treasure almost forever.
What to Bring on Your Sailing Adventure
So, getting ready for your tall ship sailing trip involves making sure you’ve packed everything you’ll actually need. To start, wear sunscreen – actually, the New Zealand sun is seriously strong, you know, very deceiving, really. Bring a hat, just as well, and sunglasses for that, you know, added protection. Take swimwear. Certainly, if you are going to swim, that is! Also, a towel – some of the ships supply those but not all, so best take your own. Don’t forget your camera, obviously – you will have to keep snapping some of those pretty scenes. And also some comfortable shoes, or even sandals. Pretty important.
A light jacket might also be, you know, a pretty good idea, yet it can get kind of breezy out on the water, actually if you are going there in some of the less hotter times. Obviously, that’s the case! Actually, a waterproof bag is a very good idea as well. Like keeping your valuables secure. Also, dry, and all. Although, most importantly, bring your sense of fun and, arguably, adventure. Oh yes. Certainly, because you’ll have that too.
