Surabaya Mount Kelud Volcano Day Trip Review: Worth It?

Thinking about heading to Mount Kelud from Surabaya for a day? I mean, that does sound like quite the adventure. I spent a day doing precisely that, and I am going to share all the details so you know what to expect and, perhaps more importantly, if it is the right adventure for you.

What to Expect From the Drive

East Java road

Okay, so the drive from Surabaya to Mount Kelud? It’s definitely something. Now, I was told that the drive would be about three hours. Yet, honestly, it was closer to four with traffic, especially when you get closer to Kediri. Keep that in mind when you’re planning your day. Also, you get to experience the beautiful East Java countryside; that is a total bonus, I would say.

The roads can be a little bumpy in places, I mean that’s for sure, especially as you move away from the main highways. Getting a reliable driver who knows the way is useful, really useful. That is because the route can be tricky if you aren’t familiar with the area. The scenery, though? It is stunning. Rice paddies, small villages, and views of other, often far-off, volcanoes make the drive worthwhile. The area definitely has a rustic appeal to it, very rustic in some spots too. You will definitely see a slower pace of life in this part of Java, that’s for certain.

Reaching Mount Kelud: The Ascent

Mount Kelud tunnel

Once you arrive at the Mount Kelud base camp, it gets very interesting, very fast. After the eruption in 2014, they built this crazy tunnel right into the mountain. I am serious. This means you drive through the tunnel almost directly into the crater area. It’s really quite an experience; you emerge inside what feels like another planet.

The views of the crater lake are breathtaking, and the volcanic landscape is something that I think everybody needs to see once. The air has this distinct sulfuric smell that just emphasizes the fact that you are, very, very much on an active volcano. From there, it is possible to hike around the area; so, of course, I decided to do just that.

Hiking Around the Crater

Hiking around the Mount Kelud crater is really accessible, so almost anybody can do it. The trails are generally well-maintained and not particularly steep, but that Java heat? Yeah, it’s something else, pretty intense too. Bring plenty of water, like seriously. And a hat. A good sunscreen would be useful too.

As you hike, the views change, revealing new perspectives of the crater lake and the surrounding volcanic terrain, actually some stunning perspectives if you walk a little farther. The colors are unreal. Shades of green, yellow, and grey blend in pretty dramatic ways, showcasing the geological activity of the area. It’s a photographer’s dream, truly.

Lunch and Local Flavors

Indonesian food

Most tours, I mean day trips to Mount Kelud from Surabaya, will include lunch, that is, like, kind of what they do. I actually found the local food to be one of the best parts of the day. Usually, lunch is served at a restaurant near the volcano, pretty near the parking area, offering Indonesian dishes.

Nasi goreng, soto ayam, and gado-gado were on the menu, and all were fresh and so delicious, really quite something actually. It’s a lovely way to relax after your hike and taste a piece of East Java. The meals can be simple, but they showcase genuine Indonesian flavors, flavors that I have really come to appreciate. Do try the local tea too, it is usually very good and goes great with spicy food.

Is the Day Trip Worth It?

Volcanic landscape

So, is the Mount Kelud day trip worth it? This actually depends on what you’re looking for. The drive is lengthy, there’s no question about that, and can be tiring, very tiring, but the volcanic landscape is one-of-a-kind. If you enjoy outdoor activities and are curious about geological wonders, you might find it worth the time. For those seeking a relaxed and easy day, I am not too certain; this might be a little too adventurous. Also, keep in mind that this region of Java is not as developed or touristy as other parts, for example Bali, which has pros and cons of its own.

Okay, so let me summarize it for you. A trip to Mount Kelud can be something to write home about, that’s for sure. The ride can be really long, three, perhaps four, hours; that said, I have really come to love seeing Java pass by as you head out of Surabaya. I’ve driven similar drives to go see the Malang Tea Plantations or even when seeing a sunrise in Bromo. A nice drive it is, even if it is kind of long. Then, Mount Kelud itself? Incredible views, even if they aren’t exactly a sunrise from the top of Bromo or Ijen. So, yes, I guess I do recommend this little adventure.

  • Long Drive: The trip involves a 3-4 hour drive each way from Surabaya.
  • Unique Landscape: Mount Kelud offers one-of-a-kind volcanic scenery.
  • Hiking: Hiking around the crater is relatively easy and accessible.
  • Local Cuisine: The included lunch features tasty Indonesian dishes.
  • Considerations: The trip may not be ideal for those seeking a very relaxed experience.

Anyway, all that is said. Safe travels, that is, of course, if you end up doing this thing!
