Picture this, if you will: it’s super early, still dark outside, and you’re heading out into the Queensland bush, near Airlie Beach, that is. And not just for any reason, mind you; you’re on a mission to see kangaroos and wallabies as the sun pops up. That sounds like an experience, yeah? It is! I recently had the opportunity to go on one of these “Sunrise with Kangaroos and Wallabies” tours near Airlie Beach, and, well, I thought I should pass on my thoughts, too, you know?

What’s the Big Deal with Kangaroos at Sunrise, Very?

So, why go at sunrise, specifically? Well, there’s just a bit of a reason, that is. Kangaroos and wallabies, pretty much like a bunch of other animals, tend to be more active during the cooler parts of the day, usually at dawn and dusk. They tend to chill a bit during the heat, and a morning trip also lets you see some wonderful Aussie countryside bathed in some awesome golden light. Beautiful scenery and kangaroos? Count me in, in fact!

You will, first off, want to find an operator that really cares for the animals. Ethical tourism should, just really, be a big deal, you know? Do a little search online, read some reviews, too, and look for outfits that make it obvious that they don’t just let anyone bother or crowd the animals. A top tour, basically, gives you information, lets you watch from a respectful space, and generally treats these animals, very much, with kindness. This ensures that the kangaroos stay unstressed, in a way, and that you, that is, and others get to see them in as close to a natural setting as we humans can reasonably arrange, right?

What to Expect on a Kangaroo Sunrise Adventure, Truly

The actual experience is this: expect a really early start. Like, think before dawn. I mean, it’s sunrise, for crying out loud! The tour usually, it’s almost, involves a drive to some grassland area outside of Airlie Beach. This is frequently, almost, private property where kangaroos hang around. Once there, your tour guide, so, very, will usually give you the lay of the land: stuff about kangaroos, like, other wildlife that hang around the area, that, I’d say, and any specific directions you need to follow. And then, the main event! You watch, take some fantastic pictures, but always very, keep your space. These are wild critters; you can usually approach, that is, up to a point, as long as you are careful and don’t get all up in their space. After a while, usually after the sun’s made an appearance and you have filled up your camera, you head back to Airlie Beach, in some respects. It feels good getting that little peek at some nature before, almost, everything goes back to typical hustle.

Things to Keep in Mind for Kangaroo Viewing at Dawn

OK, a couple of things I, too, want to flag for your visit to see the Roos. The weather can change in Queensland faster than, really, I can change my mind, you know, and a little bit more so if the sky is mostly open and empty of trees, which a plain where roos hang out surely will be. Check the weather report the night before, that you should be able to do, in a way. And bring clothes, like, that layer, so, basically you can peel them off or put them back on depending on how the temperature feels. Since you are up and out so very early, you may also wish to take a nap on returning. I would say that, if you do take that nap, you don’t want to oversleep; that really happens, doesn’t it? Of course, on your outing, make sure your camera or phone is ready, too; you don’t want to run out of charge before seeing those Roos.

What You Should Pack to See Kangaroos

• Camera and Extra Batteries: This, for sure, is vital to get amazing memories.
• Warm Layers: The mornings do start off cold.
• Insect Repellent: You should probably protect against the little bitey ones.
• Comfortable Shoes: Good if you need to hike a little, basically.
• Water: That, too, is essential so you won’t dehydrate.

Other Airlie Beach Stuff, You See?

Airlie Beach has, it turns out, more than kangaroos. It is the entryway, more or less, to the Whitsunday Islands, which means it is perfect to check out, as I was saying, the Great Barrier Reef or perhaps a yacht trip if that strikes your fancy. The area itself, I mean, is fun to kick back and visit, just very. It has, basically, nice seashores, markets, and lots of little nooks with cute restaurants. The lagoon there is good if, in fact, you need a safe location to swim.

Was the Kangaroo Sunrise Thing Worth It?

Yeah, seeing kangaroos and wallabies hopping around as the day starts near Airlie Beach truly, I mean, is special, you know? Especially if you are coming from somewhere where kangaroos are mostly at a zoo or not really around, more or less. Just ensure, arguably, you choose a responsible tour operator that places animal comfort way high. With some planning, I, too, guess you could agree that a “Sunrise with Kangaroos” can totally highlight any travel to Airlie Beach and Queensland. If you are careful, that’s so true.
