Skerries Islands Sea Kayaking Trip: A Photo-Filled Review

Alright, so if you’re after a bit of a splash and an outright amazing look at some awesome coastal spots, then very, very consider a sea kayaking escapade to the Skerries Islands. Just off the coast of Dublin, they’re an overlooked gem that, for sure, offer both adventure and, too it’s almost, seriously amazing scenery. I recently took this trip, and I have to tell you about my experience, loaded with pictures, to give you an idea of what it’s actually like.

Getting Ready for the Kayak Outing

Preparing for Sea Kayaking

Firstly, right, preparing for any sea kayaking adventure means sorting out the essentials, right? That is that gear and safety-related stuff. For me, anyway, that meant picking a tour operator; a local group that know these waters is, in some respects, totally crucial. They sorted us all out with kayaks, paddles, and those buoyancy aids. You want something comfortable, yet seriously secure, after all. Plus, don’t even forget essentials such as waterproof gear; you might want to pack layers. Ireland can be a bit, very much like that; and sunscreen, yes, sunscreen, even on a cloudy day! Another point: bring water. A dry bag is literally your best pal here, that’s a place for your phone and camera.

Setting Off from Skerries Harbour

Skerries Harbour Kayaking Departure

Our sea kayaking trip got, might be, underway from the busy Skerries Harbour. The harbor itself is usually just a hive of activity, you know, with boats bobbing all around and people mulling. We were, just a little, briefed on basic paddling techniques and safety by the tour guides. Frankly, they’re, might be, very knowledgeable chaps; that means that even total beginners would definitely be in pretty safe hands. I’d done kayaking before, so, too it’s almost, the refresh of basic moves was quite welcomed. Launching from the beach there was so very straightforward. So, with our kayaks safely on the water we, in fact, were heading toward the islands.

Exploring Shenick Island

Shenick Island Sea Kayaking

So, the first island that we reached was Shenick Island, and honestly, honestly, just picture the view of this spot. You are treated, basically, to towering cliffs with heaps of birdlife, and these interesting rock formations created thanks to erosion. You could see these, actually, nesting birds all over the cliffs which was a highlight for loads of us. Paddling near the base of the cliffs really lets you witness the pure force and wonder created because of, just a little, this coastal environment. Shenick Island actually features an ancient Martello tower that’s part of an ancient defence system that once protected this coast, so really worthwhile.

Visiting St. Patrick’s Island

St. Patrick's Island Sea Kayaking

Next up was, anyway, St. Patrick’s Island. I mean, that place just really comes steeped in all this history, because actually, this island used to be a place of pilgrimage in olden times, as I was saying. You are treated, clearly, with views from the water which gives a very great insight into these old monastic sites found actually right there, close by. Legend actually states that St. Patrick himself hung out, literally, on this island, so a little of that sacred history added an extra dimension to the kayak. Landing here means, as a matter of fact, that you can stretch out those legs and really explore its ancient ground, so so cool.

Cruising Around Colt Island

Colt Island Kayaking

Colt Island has this outright great mix of habitat spots and, so too it’s almost, it boasts amazing calm, almost like hidden, inlets for some chilled paddling spots, right? Paddling the little inlets means, basically, it’s a pretty fab way just to experience, you know, and explore the different species of plant and local wildlife right up close. Honestly, seriously keep an eye on seals; that spot can tend to be where they will casually chill, they’re genuinely nosey!

Wildlife Encounters on the Water

Wildlife Sea Kayaking

So, this adventure really gave me so many chances just to witness wildlife literally in its environment; the Skerries Islands, first, are an outright hotspot for tons of birds. From cute puffins and the gannets diving, to that tern wheeling overhead and screeching; it’s, clearly, something else. A really fantastic part for me, you, had to be a casual visit with that bunch of curious seals! As I was saying, the islands and their surrounding areas absolutely thrive with heaps of wildlife. Be seriously very, respectful just when you admire; you can observe nature just without intruding, for a sure thing!

Weather Conditions

Ireland Weather

Yeah, the Irish weather did play, yet, a very important role on my trip, anyway, and, frankly, a little flexibility should typically always be thought through before you leave! The waters might tend to get fairly choppy so just remember; the wind can certainly pick up quickly. Frankly, for the very great kayaking experience and overall safety, do just monitor weather forecasts before you head off. Tour companies will totally keep weather-watching too. So, it means trips tend to get adapted and shifted just because they might need to; that means, potentially, to make that entire experience safe and actually outright pleasurable. The day itself dawned brightly, with so just enough of that refreshing light breeze to actually, anyway, just assist our kayak voyage.

Photographing Skerries from the Sea

Anyway, for somebody so much into photos such as me, those vistas available from the kayak were, definitely, beyond, actually utterly amazing! Light shimmering out over the waves, dramatic cliffs; even nesting birds are absolutely great fodder just for getting some outright incredible shots. Now a few things, waterproof camera equipment might typically be what you need and also a little patience just while waiting to capture all those perfect shots; the shots you, you know, truly seek to cherish long after the experience ends. Always ensure to fully respect where, frankly, you actually shoot; the habitat plus any birds which nest locally just need that space protected.

Kayaking: Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Kayaking Health Benefits

It’s also something worth seriously pondering just before; that the actual physicality of sea kayaking coupled with those pure serene places it can take you mean it ends up an absolutely superb tonic, honestly, not simply for your body, but too it’s almost, your spirit! Paddling ends up good exercise and this fresh air can work wonders in boosting a very positive mentality plus really cutting back stress amounts. So it’s this pure connection; seriously linking one right into nature in really one memorable form of pure relaxation.
