It is the sort of place where, at the end of the day, you could honestly spend hours just walking around taking photos. You know, you’ve got gardens surrounding the palace, plus those are definitely worth wandering through too. There are winding paths and hidden nooks that, in some respects, make you feel as if you’ve discovered your own little world. Yet, you know, with the other tourists all taking pictures just like you.

Quinta da Regaleira is that a bit of a variance, a little? If Pena Palace is kind of out there, like your obvious fairy tale location, Quinta da Regaleira is something way more mysterious. Too it’s almost one of those locations where you’re always thinking something new can be found as you turn some corner. The Initiation Well is perhaps the most popular spot right here, plus it’s understandable why. This is not only some well; this is a deep, spiraling staircase going underground, employed for ceremonial purposes back in the day. I will let you look that up if you do not know.
I honestly, basically spent longer than expected checking out the tunnels underneath the estate. So, you do not want to wear sandals! Anyway, that do connect to several points around the gardens. Yet, with each twist plus turn, that adds something even more interesting than the last. I will mention that it is very worth following a guide right here, simply so that you do not end up missing some crucial detail and to avoid wandering in circles. It’s extremely easy to get just a little lost, so it’s really worth having a good tour guide.
Azenhas Do Mar: Coastal Charm
Following those palaces, that’s where the tour got switched up, with a stop at Azenhas Do Mar, plus it proved an ideal contrast to the historical spots. So, what is that about? Also, do consider taking a bit just relaxing at the beach if that climate is good. Still, that is dependent upon the weather, because obviously I went in February when it was, shall we say, not warm. Yet, with summer sun? Wonderful! You might also like it in the winter if it is warm to you, depending on where you are from. Someone from Alaska? Balmy! That, too, tends to make a spot feel better.
The Guide: Knowledgeable and Engaging?
Alright, so let’s speak about something that could make or destroy one of those tours: the tour guide. You’ll be happy to hear that this one was extremely good. Really, if the guide had been terrible I could have simply skipped the tour all together.
