Siem Reap Magical Kulen Mountain Trip with Cambodiajeep: A Review

So, if you’re thinking of swapping the usual temple trails of Angkor for something a bit different around Siem Reap, taking a day trip to Kulen Mountain with Cambodiajeep just might be a brilliant idea. Cambodiajeep provides tours all over Siem Reap. Yet, I decided to give their Kulen Mountain adventure a shot, and I’m going to share what I thought about the whole thing. It’s a fantastic alternative. To be fair, it goes past the expected stuff for, like your temple experience.

What to Expect on Your Kulen Mountain Trip

Kulen Mountain Waterfall

Okay, before even signing up, I really wanted to know what I was getting into, like your actual itinerary. With Cambodiajeep’s tour, it’s almost that the day unfolds like this: a breezy jeep ride through the countryside, stopping by some old temple spots, visiting the River of a Thousand Lingas, and even cooling off with a swim at Kulen Mountain’s waterfall. But, the trick is, I also expected to get a bit of a peek at daily life for the locals too, and, they delivered!

The Jeep Ride: A Taste of Rural Cambodia

Cambodia Countryside Jeep

Very quickly, once you are out of Siem Reap, the change in scenery happens just like that! So, you trade crowded streets for spread-out rice paddies and little villages. That Cambodiajeep ride is, arguably, much more than only a way to get to Kulen Mountain; very quickly it feels like you are being introduced to another side of Cambodia. We actually stopped at a local market to get some fresh fruit. I had a great time seeing all of the produce the local area has to offer. The guides are pretty great, and even explained some stuff to me about the local varieties.

Ancient Echoes: Exploring Kulen Mountain Temples

Kulen Mountain Temple

That first real stop will usually be at one of the mountainside temples, where, apparently, the history starts to come alive. So, it’s not Angkor Wat crowded, so you’ve got a chance to actually enjoy the quiet and have a little time for reflection as you see these very old stones. Those guides told me a little bit about the place’s background and about the symbolic stuff you see carved here and there. A bit of advice: maybe read just a bit about the mountain’s role in forming the ancient Khmer empire; it really gives you so much more context as you explore. This mountain is, after all, very sacred to the local population.

The River of a Thousand Lingas: A Sacred Site

River of a Thousand Lingas

One of the cooler stops you make, usually, is the River of a Thousand Lingas (Kbal Spean). What it is is a riverbed that’s been elaborately carved with these lingas and other Hindu symbols way back in the day. A small trek is how you get there. The setting is pretty, just that; a bit of a jungle, a stream babbling. After I had seen, yet, a lot of formal temples, there was something kind of neat about the ancient art mixing right in with this very natural setting.

Kulen Waterfall: Refresh and Recharge

Swimming Kulen Mountain Waterfall

Next up, that swimming at Kulen Waterfall, in that tropical heat, is exactly what you want! The waterfall itself isn’t all that big. It is not some dramatic cascade, mind you. Yet, just getting into that water is extremely refreshing. It’s a spot that you can see lots of Cambodian families enjoying, and there’s a sectioned area, typically, where you can swim safely. You could sit and take in nature.

What Makes Cambodiajeep Stand Out

Cambodiajeep Tour Guide

Okay, now, lots of people offer Kulen Mountain tours, that’s true. Cambodiajeep seems to do some specific things that I think are, actually, a big plus. I was really impressed by these folks.

Local Guides: Knowledgeable and Personable

That tour guide will be crucial; they really do impact how your whole day goes. The guide that I was given through Cambodiajeep seemed to know what he was talking about when it came to all the history, all the background of each of the spots, and he was awesome at making sure I enjoyed myself. Yet, it’s not just reciting dates from a textbook either. He told these fantastic stories and could explain the modern context of a place like Kulen Mountain, for Cambodians now. Basically, he seemed to love showing off this part of the country and his job.

Comfort and Convenience: The Cambodiajeep Experience

Traveling in an actual jeep makes this something special, in a way, just in comparison to a car or minivan. You can get that wind-in-your-hair feeling on those country roads, and if it is quite warm, the jeeps are shaded and comfortable. That whole tour operation really seemed smoothly managed, that, from getting picked up to dropping back off, and even the booking itself was simple to set up. The vehicle seemed well maintained and was really driven safely. So, this might just be the best way to enjoy Kulen Mountain!

Tips for Planning Your Trip

Kulen Mountain Travel Tips

Before you grab a Cambodiajeep tour over to Kulen Mountain, some tips I would give you to make that day run as smoothly as possible are listed here.

What to Wear

Visiting temples requires shoulders to be covered and, also, to dress respectfully in general. The surfaces up there at Kulen Mountain might be rough and it is not unreasonable that you could do a little bit of walking, therefore you might wish to put on some walking shoes! Also, so, bring along that swimwear if you are going to get right in that waterfall.

What to Bring

Sunscreen is a necessity. That Cambodian sun is, apparently, powerful, very quickly if you burn like I do. That water bottle that you can reuse is smart too; that way you aren’t just contributing to plastic waste. Small amounts of cash are beneficial if you see trinkets at the local markets or, you can always get the freshest, just squeezed, sugar cane juice from one of the roadside vendors.

Best Time to Visit

Dry season, which falls somewhere between November and April, typically, is usually when you’d prefer going to Kulen Mountain. Those roads turn a bit hard to travel if that area had some rainfall, but, dry season is super great for trekking, just because of its predictability.

Is Kulen Mountain with Cambodiajeep Worth It?
