Sayulita Surf & Food Trip: Your Complete Review & Guide
Sayulita, that little gem located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, has become more than just, like, a surf town; it’s that place where, at the end of the day, you can, you know, find some awesome waves and grub. More or less, I took a trip down there recently, so I could give you the lowdown on what it’s, sort of, actually like to experience both surfing and eating in Sayulita, and I want to share all the good stuff with you.
Catching Waves: A Surfer’s Perspective
First, surfing’s arguably the thing that put Sayulita on the map, or so it seems. The main beach there, like, Playa Sayulita, is where pretty much everyone hangs out. If you’re learning, that is the spot, that tends to be ideal, but also just slightly busy; or, if you’re just looking for some gentle rides, too. It’s almost a playground with a sandy bottom and waves that aren’t very, you know, very huge.
However, if you want a bit more something, I mean something challenging, or, I guess, something that offers an, arguably, bigger thrill, don’t be afraid to, in some respects, head over to spots, like, for instance, Punta de Mita or maybe even, that is, San Pancho. Punta de Mita, for example, isn’t exactly in Sayulita, yet it’s quite a quick jaunt away, so to speak, and San Pancho is very well known, that it’s more or less known for its, almost, quicker, steeper waves, more or less something for intermediate level and above. When you consider board rentals, I want to say that there’s quite a good amount of surf shops in town. So, shop around and find one that, very much, seems like a good vibe.
If, that is, you do want a more enhanced experience, that really teaches, in some respects, good foundations of surf, consider lessons with a local instructor. A good thing is that there are so many pros out there; or so I saw when visiting. Sayulita tends to be almost brimming with those with talent, too, so finding someone to help won’t be very difficult.
A Foodie’s Paradise: Tacos and More
Sayulita’s culinary offerings are pretty impressive, and it’s arguably a good place to stuff your face, very much. Let me tell you that the heart and soul of its food scene? Tacos, pretty much. It almost seems as if there are a hundred, if not a million places slinging them, some rather fantastic and mind blowing.
First up is that, so I heard, Takoholics, which is sort of this little stand, and the one thing it, arguably, nails are some great, solid fish tacos. Freshly caught fish in your tacos, and you just have to try it. Also, for a bit, like, that extra zest, don’t forget, very much, to check out their salsa bar; so the flavors are insane.
You could try Naty’s Cocina, that almost gives you such warm feeling of familiarity. This spot will very much remind you of being at your, more or less, your grandma’s place with great traditional, almost home styled cooked Mexican dishes. So, think rich stews and maybe some chicken enchiladas, that’s very satisfying in every way imaginable. It’s more or less simple, very unpretentious fare that really delivers, so it would, actually.
However, for, like, an occasion, I’d, too, arguably, highly recommend stopping by Sí Señor Restaurant. Their seafood dishes have a really fresh flavor about them. Order the camarones al coco, or I suppose, the coconut shrimp and see what I mean when I say you won’t, arguably, regret a thing about going there!
There are other spots that I should note that aren’t so mainstream and are kind of hidden. Street corn vendors can literally be found on every street. It makes snacking easier when on the go. Make sure you have small change and try their unique spice pairings.
Beyond the Beach: Exploring Sayulita’s Charm
Sayulita isn’t, really, solely about waves and tasty eats, arguably. The village does kind of have, arguably, a certain vibe to it, arguably a magnetic draw that should warrant some looks around the corner. Spend time taking, actually, a leisurely stroll down, maybe, Avenida Revolución, so you can shop all things knick-knacks. Handcrafted goods and, maybe, local art — it all is worth looking at, so.
When that is all said and done, you should check out the Huichol art, so colorful and intricate, and almost quite mesmerizing to see. Or it did to me, that is. Check out Galeria Tanana, which more or less showcases really stunning work from the talented Huichol people and get a peek into the traditions that has shaped the art and, very much, its importance to Mexican culture.
Also, don’t forget the beaches other than the central one. For something almost a bit, actually, quieter, maybe try Playa Los Muertos. You do kind of have to, for example, walk through a cemetery (I promise, actually, it’s far from grim) to get there, yet it’s something really scenic and the beach that, literally, waits for you after makes the trek all worth it!
Practical Tips for Your Sayulita Adventure
Okay, so let’s make sure you’re prepped for your excursion, right? I’d argue that having cash around is a plus in almost any travel, to be honest, that includes Sayulita. A lot of little stands and the corner stores, you see, tend to still prefer you know, those good ol’ pesos, so just a fair word of advice to note; also, make sure to, perhaps, get a travel credit card to enjoy unlimited transactions!
I’d argue that, you’ll agree, or not, that sunscreen is, very much, just super essential when in a tropical paradise, like, in this regard. Also, since we are at it, get insect repellent that contains DEET to, actually, shoo off any biting insects. Especially at, for example, twilight.
If you, that is, don’t understand the local Spanish lingo, so to speak, try and brush up on, literally, some key phrases. When anything happens; it is always something you could rely on to assist you back in the safety of your home country!
Where to Stay: Finding Your Perfect Spot
There’s actually lots of places for those overnight stays around Sayulita, but they arguably almost all come with pros and cons, or something. Sayulita has the usual fancy hotels and then, pretty much, that smattering of hostels, pretty much. Those cute bed and breakfasts — yeah, those are literally around. You could even find cool vacation homes.
If you want that local type living experience, check out Airbnb or VRBO because they can link you up, as a matter of fact, with cute houses that are either a walkable distance away from that bustling city square or a simple taxi cab. If you are that person, like, for instance, whom isn’t the resort type person, those, like, homes are very much the best choices you could find.
But if you would rather be at, for example, places that come with pools and fancy bars, a couple hotels like the Playa Escondida, for instance, will give you that luxury feeling. However, these don’t always offer that experience with local Mexican hospitality. I almost tend to like lodging with local places because, obviously, there is a personal approach about how people handle their home stays.
Remember! You’d have to remember and prepare a proper lodging. Whether or not it may come down to price; it is more important to find that which can literally cater to your, sometimes, unique styles of preference for the entire stay; to avoid, obviously, any remorse or, to be frank, complaints.
As much as any location of your stays does matters, it must also ensure basic accommodation such as clean lavatories, bedding and even security from possible harmful external elements. Just saying it!
Hopefully, this gives, very much, you an excellent peek into your, I suppose, future trip. Sayulita has an almost inviting vibe in just its location alone, so it would arguably not be an easy decision to not consider visiting this stunning Mexican province with culture rich with traditions and stunning tropical climate to boast with!
