Gearing Up and Setting Off

First thing, safety, that’s of course pretty important. Before we even saw a quad, there was what you might call a briefing. They went over all the basics of how to operate the ATV and what to watch out for on the trails. Helmets on, instructions heard – more or less – and we were just a bit ready to go. The ATVs looked quite new and seemed pretty well taken care of, which sort of gave us a small confidence boost, let’s say. We were a mixed group; some had ridden quads before, others, like me, were totally new to it. So, too, it was good that the guides made sure everyone felt at least reasonably comfortable before we set off, you see?

The beginning part of the trail, right, it wound gently out of the city and gradually turned into more rough and rugged terrain. The initial easy pace gave a little time to get used to the handling, get that right feel for the machine. Soon, it became more a proper mountain road. Nothing crazy at first, yet with enough bumps and turns to wake you up. That air, my gosh! So clean and crisp compared to what you get downtown. Right away, we could start seeing what made this area special. It’s beautiful with the kind of green that just seems to go on and on, seemingly. So, anyway, you can feel that city stress start to fade with every kilometer, could be?

Bjelasnica’s Beauty

Bjelasnica Mountains

The climb up Bjelasnica, it gets really interesting, I can say. As you gain some altitude, that landscape gets truly something else. Remember those 1984 Winter Olympics? Well, Bjelasnica was one of the main venues, just saying. Seeing those old ski jumps and imagining the crowds, could be special. That mountain shows you some expansive views. At one point, we stopped at what seemed almost like an overlook. The guide told us about the area’s history, all that, yet it was hard to focus. Way too easy to get lost in what you could call that stunning vista. Valleys spread out below, with forests that stretched as far as you could make out, pretty beautiful, is that not so?

The quad biking on Bjelasnica got really fun too. The trails are rather a mix of gravel, dirt, and the odd rocky patch, sort of needing a bit of focus. There were times where I felt I was really getting the hang of it – that is, till the next big bump, of course! The guides were spot on. They kept the pace upbeat while also ensuring everyone stayed safe, so you have your fun but aren’t risking it all, very thoughtful of them I’d say.

Lukomir: A Step Back in Time

Lukomir Village Bosnia

Lukomir is something unique; believe it or not, that feeling is strongest once you arrive. Said to be the highest village in Bosnia, it gives a sense of stepping way back into a different era. The traditional stone houses with wooden roofs look unchanged for centuries; I would say it might as well be. People still wear the traditional clothing and keep doing things pretty much the way they always have, perhaps. What really hits you is the quietness and a certain stillness. It’s one of those places where you can actually hear the wind and the distant sound of sheep bells, pretty pure wouldn’t you say?

The ride to Lukomir, anyway, that’s possibly the most memorable part of the tour. It goes through these open plateaus and along some ridges, with views that could seemingly go on forever. I stopped counting the “wow” moments I had, too it’s almost ridiculous how often you’ll be blown away. When we arrived, we got to meet some of the locals. Some tours arrange for you to have some traditional Bosnian coffee or maybe even a homemade meal with a family. The coffee we tried, it was strong and served in these cute little cups. That simple interaction made the experience feel much more real and it’s more than just sight-seeing, do you get my point?

What to Bring and Tips for the Trip

Adventure Travel Gear

Thinking about doing this quad adventure? Anyway, here are some things you should probably keep in your mind. Number one: clothes, right? Wear stuff you don’t mind getting dirty, probably. The trails can get dusty or muddy depending on the weather, which is a point, so dress accordingly. Layers are a good call because that mountain weather, well it can change just like that. Comfortable, sturdy shoes, very important, is that not right? Next, the sun, always there. Sunglasses and sunscreen, anyway they’re essential, even on cloudy days, let me say. I would argue, bringing a camera to take the most amount of advantage of what’s surrounding you is key. Finally, carry some water and snacks, especially if you go for a longer tour. All in all, be prepared to have a super fun adventure!
