Sao Miguel’s Moinho Do Felix Hike: A Detailed Review

If you’re thinking about a trip to Sao Miguel Island in the Azores, you’re probably already looking at some fantastic hiking opportunities. The Moinho Do Felix trail, combined with a visit to the Gorreana Tea Factory, is that type of adventure you might remember. I figured I’d share all about it – the stuff I liked, things I think you should know ahead of time, and just generally give you a feel for what to expect. It is that kind of a memorable day out.

What to Expect on the Moinho Do Felix Hike

Alright, so the Moinho Do Felix hike isn’t extremely difficult. Actually, it’s one that many skill levels can handle. Still, there are portions that can feel a bit demanding, that is what people seem to mention. Think rolling hills, somewhat uneven paths, and just a bit of an incline in some spots. It’s the sort of hike where you’ll probably feel it a little, but nothing too intense.

It does feel a bit magical at certain points. As I was walking, I was struck by these awesome views of the green, lush landscapes. You’ve got forests on one side, and these stunning glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean on the other – it’s a photographer’s dream, just so you know! I spotted some very cool plants and flowers along the way too; I actually believe there were information signs up with some of them for easy reading.

Wear some sturdy footwear with reliable grip, I can’t stress this enough. Some sections can be slippery, especially if it’s been raining. Also, even though it’s usually quite mild, the weather can still turn surprisingly quickly on Sao Miguel. Bringing a lightweight waterproof jacket is not a bad idea, is that something you thought about?

Gorreana Tea Factory: A Unique Tea Experience

The Gorreana Tea Factory is that gem – did you know it’s the oldest tea plantation in Europe? I find that to be interesting! Getting there after your hike is easy and visiting the place feels like stepping back in time. You get to witness the whole tea-making process. Very informative if you want to see some vintage machinery and watch the workers sort through leaves. It really is a bit captivating!

The tea tasting, it is something that shouldn’t be missed. It’s just complimentary. You get to sample their green and black teas – both are grown organically, apparently. I was surprised by the differences in taste; each had its distinct character, very clean and fresh too. They’ve also got a little shop where you can buy some of their teas to take back, plus various other souvenirs. If you fancy a cuppa, I find the café with gorgeous vistas a very good place to be.

Combining the Hike and Tea Factory Visit

Timing-wise, it works perfectly to combine the Moinho Do Felix hike and the Gorreana Tea Factory. It really feels quite coordinated. I started the hike in the morning and got to the factory in the early afternoon. This gave me ample time to properly see the plantation, go for some tea tasting and browse the shop with no problems. Is that something you want to do?

It is really important to be prepared. Be sure to check the weather forecast before heading out and dress appropriately; layers, probably. Bring water and maybe some light snacks to munch while walking around to avoid some unwanted events. Don’t rush; actually, take the time to soak up everything around you. I remember that the views and experiences will linger longer if you allow yourself a generous amount of time!

Getting There and Practical Information

Figuring out the logistics, now that’s key. If you’re using a rental car, getting to the Moinho Do Felix trailhead is straightforward. There’s usually space to park nearby, or at least that is what the people that were with me stated. Roads are decent enough, but having your own transport definitely offers more flexibility, as is often the case. But taxis, I hear they are an option. Especially if you would prefer to leave the car in the hotel.

The tea factory is also super accessible, it’s that kind of situation where they’ve thought of everything for the guests. They’ve got plenty of parking available, and it’s also well-signed so you won’t have any trouble getting there, if you are anything like me and get lost a lot! The factory’s open most days, however it is good to just double-check the hours ahead of your trip, especially during public holidays. It’s typically very easy to find that information online. Also, both the hike and factory are completely free! So that really helps budget travelers. Isn’t that great?

Additional Tips and Recommendations

Alright, a few other things that I learned along the way. Mosquito repellent; that’s the kind of item you probably want to take. The forests are a very great home for mosquitoes! Protecting against some bites is the better option to deal with.

A portable charger for your phone; that’s worth considering. All of those pictures and videos, all while reading maps! Well, they eat into your phone battery fast. Keep yourself connected, it could prove worthwhile.

And above all; do chat with some of the local people. The locals in the Azores; they’re unbelievably friendly! I’ve learnt much from them and all that from sharing the local culture.

Visiting the Moinho Do Felix hike with a trip to the Gorreana Tea Factory turned out to be that part of my Sao Miguel adventure. If you are seeking a mixture of natural wonder and local traditions, include these to the things on your must-see-and-do list. Just enjoy your adventure!

It feels rewarding to make this day-tour, that combines physical effort with enjoyment to experience nature.
