I visited San José, Costa Rica and taking a food tour of the Central Market just seemed like a must. It’s such a well known, big, and central hub. It seemed like the ideal way to sample a range of flavors and get a feel for local culture right from the get go, I think. The “Bites & Sights” walking tour promised exactly that: an immersion into both the tasty side and eye-opening side of this legendary spot. Did it deliver? Let’s find out.

First, we made a beeline right to a well liked stall that had what appeared to be mountains of fresh fruit. A big smoothie was prepared for each person, and it had all types of exotic fruits in it like mangoes and pineapples. I kid you not, it tasted like the sun mixed into happiness, right in a cup! Maria gave insight on each fruit, including the way they are raised in the region as she was looking on. I could practically taste Costa Rica with each sip! We moved on, then, to some heartier eats. It was a very popular “soda” – this little local diner is serving up customary dishes. We split plates of things like “casado,” a great mix that has rice, beans, plantains, plus the choice of some type of meat. Let me tell you, it had this comfort food feel with these truly authentic flavors all at once! Another thing that really stood out to me, as well, would have to be the “ceviche.” The zing that fresh lime had mingling so good with cilantro was totally unforgettable. With each nibble, Maria had this anecdote or another story that, bit by bit, put context to whatever we were consuming. That meal went way beyond taste. We felt a link with custom itself.

It wasn’t just a tasting that we were doing; so, next Maria walked us down lanes I would surely get lost in if I was doing this myself. I probably would! In the sections that dealt with leather goods. Plus crafted things. There were coffee vendors everywhere, offering up free samplings with really big smiles. And then came the flower vendors. These bouquets burst forward, and almost had a voice! She detailed the value and utilization of all that surrounded us, adding this amount of thankfulness for everyday living itself into everything we were experiencing together, you know. In the meat part, for example, she discussed sustainable ways that merchants secured all their products; plus within stalls dedicated to healing herbs, she gave information about natural cures native entirely to Costa Rica. Each stop seemed similar to peeling one other layer of the traditions of San José; far away from merely eating a dish or eyeballing some merchandise on shelves, of course!

The People You Meet: Connections and Conversations

The true essence, at the end of it, I found, resided in the interactions along the way. Maria brought us near quite a few sellers. Some of them happen to be running their own stall that was handed down over so many family members. The stories each vendor could offer just colored the full expertise as nothing else can! Consider, as an illustration, Don Ricardo, that’s a coffee grower hailing out of the mountains from a faraway location. The enthusiasm as he gave us coffee, detailing his practice in raising some of these beans? It’s unmatched. And it was palpable! Even more than it. It isn’t merely sampling delicious flavors or things, it’s relating over the traditions along with culture. That warm personality which Maria revealed shone so vividly. It really just turned a stroll throughout some market straight into a significant, very unforgettable part from my own stay right in San José, truthfully.
