Sahara 3-Day Getaway Review: Truly Worth Doing?
Thinking about a Sahara Desert getaway in Morocco? I went on the popular “3 Days Tour Sahara Discovery” and wanted to share my honest take. There are amazing sights and also, for sure, a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you decide if it’s the trip for you. So, basically, this is all about what I saw, what I felt, and whether you ought to consider adding this to your travel bucket list. Maybe, in that case, let’s see what makes this experience one of a kind.
What to Anticipate on the Drive
The tour often begins in bigger spots like Marrakech or Fes. The drives are lengthy. And, it is something to note. Seriously lengthy. You might be spending, like, seven to ten hours on the road each day. But, you do get some awesome views along the way. We’re talking, say, the High Atlas Mountains, with their tippy-top points wearing caps of snow. We actually stopped at Aït Benhaddou. Actually, a ksar, or fortified village, and saw some spots where they did filming for series. Like your fave, “Game of Thrones.” Seriously, that stop made a long day a bit better. However, be prepared for long stretches on buses or vans, but that said, keep your camera charged for awesome photo ops.
Spending the Night in the Desert
A highlight for nearly everyone on the trip, it’s almost certainly sleeping in a camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes close to Merzouga. The accommodations will be, more or less, in conventional Berber tents, don’t expect super luxury. They typically offer beds. And also, of course, basic amenities. Keep in mind that showers could be hit-or-miss, basically depending on the camp. The thing is, that night actually involved dinner served under the stars, followed by Berber music. That’s just a whole other feel. Later on, if you go away from the camp just a little bit, you can see stars in a way most people just never get to experience. Maybe remember to bring something warm, because the desert gets surprisingly cool at night.
Camel Rides and Things to Think About
You will nearly for sure get to ride a camel into the desert. It’s pretty standard on this tour. It can be quite bumpy but honestly, very unforgettable as the sun goes either up or down. Know that camels can be a bit hard on your backside. And maybe also remember sunscreen. Some trips let you sandboard. That actually could be a laugh. Still, it could be tiring trekking up those dunes again each time. The tour, too, typically provides opportunities to check out the desert sunrise. Really recommend not sleeping in; the colors spreading across the dunes make the early wake-up truly something special. So too it’s almost an otherworldly experience.
What About the Guides?
What you get with tour guides is really a mixed bag. A few are super passionate. In that case, they can tell you stories. You can hear about Berber culture, which can add so much. Though, it seems like some might stick to the basics. Maybe that actually means you will need to ask plenty of questions. Read up on your own, and it really could get the most out of what they tell you. The group I was with had, like, people from everywhere. Actually, that could be very fun. Though also, too, you may need patience because people are different when they travel. That is that not everybody moves at the same speed. Also, some may have demands to cater for everyone on a set-schedule type deal. Still, basically it could be an easy way to see a lot with the organizing all sorted.
Little Things to Help You Enjoy the Trip
Remember, small details can definitely enhance the experience. Bring some wet wipes, in a way to freshen up between those drives in the desert heat. A power bank can come in extremely handy, also, for keeping devices juiced up in the event you’re away from plugins a bunch. Definitely something to keep in mind. To prevent stomach issues, only sip bottled water and consider bringing a few snacks just in case. That is that not every food stop really suits everybody’s liking. A scarf to cover your face can come in handy when it’s windy to keep sand off of you. Also to consider is respecting native customs by wearing respectful clothing when in more local villages, if it fits with who you want to be.
Is This Trip a “Do”?
For people hoping to take in huge desert vistas with someone else dealing with the travel side, then yes, the 3 Days Sahara Discovery may fit perfectly. But if you get fidgety sitting for hours and you would want, say, loads of independence, then maybe weigh other options. That, basically, it does depend on your personal travel vibe. From my angle, the scenery, spending the night way out in the desert, and seeing bits of Berber way of life surely made it all worthwhile. Very happy I said “yes” to seeing the Sahara. It had that sense of really big adventure you sort of long for when seeing spots such as Morocco.
