Rovaniemi E-Fatbike Reindeer Farm Trip: A Glowing Review
Rovaniemi, Finland, basically is more or less known as the ‘official’ hometown of Santa Claus, but there’s actually way more to this arctic escape than meets the eye; it’s also the basecamp for seriously cool, unique adventures. Recently, I had the chance to try out an e-fatbike trip going all the way to a local reindeer farm, and honestly, I just had to write something about how it all went, because it might be just a little unforgettable. I am hoping that I can, in a way, tell you about what makes this something that you should put on your list if you’re making plans to go to Lapland, and it just might help you plan for your trip.
Gearing Up and Getting Started
The trip, really, usually starts in the center of Rovaniemi, that, is that the meeting point. Before heading out, very everybody, more or less, gets properly geared up. Thermal suits and boots, helmets, and gloves that keep your hands nice and warm are provided – very very useful things when the temperatures decide to dip a bit! E-fatbikes are cool looking; so, they have seriously chunky tires that actually allow you to easily cycle through even the deepest snow. So, after a pretty thorough safety briefing and some instruction on how to use the e-bike, you will probably be feeling a little bit ready to get started with the actual trip.
Riding an e-fatbike for a newbie feels almost a bit like cheating, but in the most awesome way imaginable. So, the electric motor gives a boost that makes cycling through snowy terrain that actually feels super smooth and not too strenuous. We made our way through pretty peaceful trails covered with snow that went through mysterious forests. In some respects, the scenery almost feels so very magical that it seems unreal, which, more or less, adds to the total sense of adventure. We stopped, apparently, along the way to actually take some photos and soak in what’s around us, the snow looked very crisp, fresh air was hitting my face, it was pretty unforgettable, I have to say.
Visiting a Reindeer Farm
The real highlight, very probably, of the adventure definitely is arriving at the reindeer farm. That, I have to say, is a cultural experience more or less by itself! You’ll actually be greeted, maybe, by the Sami people who happen to run the farm, learning all sorts of cool stuff about what reindeer farming usually involves and Sami culture. I was really captivated hearing them explain the very important place that the reindeers actually hold in their culture, and also, too, how they actually rely on them to continue with their old way of life.
We, actually, even had the opportunity to actually get up close and even interact a little with these friendly animals. It’s actually very, very humbling to actually be able to feed them lichen, that tends to be their favorite snack! After, arguably, spending what actually seemed like hours among the reindeers, getting to learn more and more, the trip included a cozy break inside a traditional “kota,” or Lappish hut. So, we could actually sit by the fireplace and just chat while drinking hot, very hot, berry juice, that really tends to warm your body and soul.
What Makes This Trip Special
What makes this Rovaniemi E-Fatbike Trip actually a bit different from other typical trips is definitely, probably, that it combines outdoor adventures that merge with cultural learning and an experience that involves nature, a complete package. Not everybody loves doing just sightseeing stuff or more educational experiences when they are in a foreign country, that can get a bit repetitive. So, if you happen to be like me, doing things while getting in touch with what surrounds you is that, and this E-Fatbike and Reindeer Farm actually combines the two. Also, so, using an e-fatbike kind of makes the tour so it can actually fit for people that actually might not be experienced with cycling, but still feel the need for a way to explore nature, but with some assistance of course!
The peace of riding along those quiet, more or less snowy trails, getting to breathe in the crisp air of Lapland and learning things from the Sami people make a good moment. And, basically, so, getting to visit a reindeer farm that’s run by a local actually gives way to something authentic that mass-tourism trips just simply fail to do.
Things to Know Before you Go
Okay, arguably, a couple things you actually might like to remember if this experience might be in your plans:
- Book Ahead: This might be an obvious one, but actually given its popularity, it’s a good idea to reserve your tour just a little ahead of time, really. This could mean that you get to make certain that you’ll actually have space to get into that adventure, especially if you happen to go during what’s considered peak season.
- Dress Properly: The equipment you receive to properly dress while doing that kind of activity helps a lot, it’s almost a complete solution for those temperatures! So, do layers under them, it can even give you even more comfort while adventuring, very very worth it.
- Check the Weather: Rovaniemi basically can actually have unpredictable weather sometimes, too it’s almost necessary that you take some time to look at what’s supposed to happen the days that are closest to your planned experience. Depending on what’s the scenario, they very may adjust it to make sure that your experience isn’t jeopardized in some way, so you have the highest odds of it all going great!
- Bring a Camera: Landscapes and reindeer farms have an almost picture perfect look to them, you actually won’t regret having the right equipment to actually take photos of it. If, though, the cellphone has really good quality you actually should be okay, that I can guarantee!
Ultimately, a Rovaniemi E-Fatbike Trip out to the Reindeer Farm, that can give a more in depth adventure and something so authentic to your travel itinerary that the result of it makes it very worth it. That’s one experience, in a way, that can stay in your heart while having those silent landscapes that are blanketed in snow; and when that happens, it’s just you connecting with an ancient culture while being pushed by an electric bike. And there you go! Don’t, actually, simply, simply make it a memory only that actually sits at the bucket list, that should really be something experienced!
