And the Salgueiro Samba School? Well, you see, it is legendary. So, thinking about, say, heading down to Rio for Carnival 2025 or 2026 and getting involved with Salgueiro, well, you know, that could be an incredible trip.

What Is So Good About Salgueiro Samba School?

Salgueiro Samba School

Now, why Salgueiro, you might wonder? It’s like, more than just another samba school, basically. It has, sort of, this history and, kind of, a real community feel. Like your typical school from Rio, only with lots of sparkly costumes. They’re known for being, you see, passionate and, pretty much, full of energy and they’ve won the Carnival parade, what is it, like, nine times, roughly. The performances tend to be super vibrant, that’s how they present themselves, visually speaking, and full of stories that, you know, are all about Brazilian culture. Their colors, what is it, red and white, it’s hard to, well, it’s nearly impossible to forget them. So, it is, potentially, seeing that color scheme and feeling that excitement that has many people thinking that visiting Salgueiro provides a proper Carnival experience.

If you think about it, jumping into, potentially, an event like that can, actually, mean lots of different things. So, for many it’s a bucket list thing. But for others, who knows, maybe, really, wanting to just party or, just possibly, experiencing a genuine cultural event is the reason for wanting to jump into, arguably, a once in a lifetime situation. Either way, there are several considerations when deciding to experience Carnival in Brazil, so to speak.

Getting Involved: Experience Opportunities

Carnival Parade Rio

So, there are tons of, roughly, ways to, like, become a little bit involved with Salgueiro, for a given value of involved. Of course, you, potentially, might go for, I do not know, just visiting their rehearsals, for instance. During rehearsal times, mostly in the months beforehand, leading all the way up to Carnival, the quadra (that’s, I think, what they call their open-air practice space) goes totally bonkers. It is more or less full of people, all dancing and singing; it’s something else. Actually, this event will give you a proper sneak peek into the effort of what it takes to put on a display of this size.

Another option that has been known to exist is, possibly, to get a costume and join the parade with the school, though. Now that’s intense. Now, typically, they offer various “alas,” they’re more or less sections within the school. Every single “ala” has its very own costume, so it depends on which section, nearly, fits what you, kind of, look for, style wise, but even interest-wise too. You will still need to learn the Samba song and steps, roughly. Also, keep in mind that, really, standing in line for, potentially, the entire parade while wearing a costume isn’t as easy as it sounds.

What To Expect When You Go See a Show

Samba Performance

When you go to a rehearsal, what usually ends up happening is that you, very quickly, understand just how deeply important the carnival experience is. The shows include, what, possibly, entire communities. People of all ages are going to be singing, what is it, dancing, and participating. And remember that if you choose to visit the shows that you will feel completely submerged in the Brazilian sound. It’s going to be extremely crowded. I mean so much so that moving around and breathing gets tricky. Try, possibly, to come in comfy clothes and shoes; more or less this event is a standing party, more or less. Oh, yes! Bringing earplugs may not be such a bad idea, you see, the bands play very loud, actually.

If you do decide to be in the parade, think, if you will, all of that taken up a big notch. So there is, potentially, some waiting involved while the school comes up to parade time. As they happen, one after another, you need to stand by for your number to be called, virtually. Oh, yes, prepare yourself for lots of lights, many people, plenty of crazy, beautiful floats and, virtually, what I assume, feels like an overdose of pure energy.

Things to Prepare Beforehand

Travel Preparation

Booking everything way in advance can save you money but it could also give you, generally, that feeling that all things are covered. The flights, for instance, that they, typically, can and do get very expensive during carnival. Now, what is great is if you plan early enough to actually keep checking often to grab any potential price drops that appear here and there, naturally. Consider staying close, in the southern region, very. But for the budget conscious maybe it could be, somewhat, fun staying further out from the popular beaches. I will say, actually, do book in advance though.

Oh, yes, consider looking into the official channels to grab, you see, parade tickets, rehearsals, anything relating to access at the Salgueiro, honestly. Doing so could keep any possibility for disappointment at bay. And if I were you I would learn a little Portuguese, too; actually. Knowing some basics will, quite likely, enhance your experience in the country so very much. That goes without saying that if you want to have a great trip you want to respect cultural things, honestly, to potentially, avoid sticking out like, arguably, the tourist stereotype too. Oh, yes, be very conscious about showing wealth, naturally. Unfortunately petty crime can potentially ruin a person’s stay, basically.

And for packing? Pack light clothes made from, you know, very breathable material, I’d say. Because honestly Rio gets steamy that time of year. Keep in mind bringing sunscreen and, definitely, a good reusable water bottle; staying properly hydrated will come in handy after long days of partying! And of course don’t ever forget some really good, sturdy dancing shoes. Oh yes, be aware that vaccinations and travel insurance are the, possibly, dull, but ever necessary steps to ticking off before jetting off to have yourself a carnival experience!

Costs: Is It Worth It?

Rio de Janeiro Budget

How much this, sort of, escapade can end up setting you back will vary depending on the level you decide to dial it up. If it means attending rehearsals and staying somewhere not so fancy, then, naturally, it will be very much cheaper than spending money on VIP boxes for parade events and staying in a hotel that is beach-facing in Copacabana. Roughly expect, potentially, the plane to cost the most. What does depend will be the time frame, booking in advance or leaving it until the last minute too; basically. Costumes can cost, actually, about a hundred to potentially a few hundred, typically depending on the “ala.” Of course tickets to rehearsals cost, in most situations, only a couple of bucks; but that will often also be at the discretion of who may be performing, you know.

So, you might be thinking, will the dent in the account be all so worthwhile for you, what with all this said and done? Honestly, people very often say that being submerged deep into this specific part of Brazil’s tradition and culture ends up being a priceless experience that can give memories for many years. If a good time is something that appeals to you then consider attending this massive party because it’s probably unlike anything a person will ever experience!

Carnival Etiquette: Showing Respect

cultural etiquette

Just possibly keep a few etiquette points, mostly, just to enrich the experience for anyone present. Showing appreciation, genuinely, means celebrating alongside them and also joining in on their dancing but without disturbing what is taking place and overshadowing what those leading those events or wearing some form of regalia/garb means and stands for; often! Make all and every effort that might have people from Salgueiro happy to welcome and accommodate any traveller/person from any cultural/historical place around our globe. Be mindful, naturally.

It’s quite alright, arguably, to admire everything that the school showcases when performing. Bear in mind showing actual appreciation in any shape or form; by whooping or hollering or something else. What goes a very long way goes along doing so and cheering everyone and everyone involved.
