Rhodes Medieval Town Food Tour: A Delicious Review

Planning a trip to Rhodes and wondering if that food tour in the Medieval Town is, that is, worth your money? Well, you’ve come to just the place! I recently took that walking food tour myself, and I’m here to, in a way, spill all the details, the tasty ones and otherwise. Rhodes, as a matter of fact, is simply bursting with history, and guess what? So too is its food scene! The Medieval Town? Oh, that’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, stuffed to the gills with charm, narrow cobblestone streets, and seriously scrumptious eats. I’m going to give you my honest opinion on whether this particular tour is that is, actually the yummiest route to experiencing it.

First Impressions: Meeting Point and Atmosphere

Rhodes Medieval Town meeting

Okay, so the tour began near one of the main gates into the Medieval Town. It’s really simple to find, or at least I located it just fine! What hit me right away, I mean, actually the very first thing I noticed, that is, was the lively feel. You know, groups milling, chatter filling the air. The guide, or at least our guide that day, introduced himself, oh, I believe his name was Nikos, and was instantly welcoming. There were maybe about 12 of us? Twelve in our group, a pretty great size. Not too huge that you couldn’t, you know, hear what’s going on, and yet quite enough to generate a real social vibe.

The Food: A Delicious Deep-Dive

Greek food delights

Let’s, I mean really lets, get to the good stuff: the food! It was less like food, actually and almost like a highlight reel of Greek yumminess. From savory to oh-so-sweet, my taste buds were, actually and in a way, doing a happy dance the whole time! So, too here’s a taste – ahem – of what we tried:

  • Souvlaki: Okay, so is that even a trip to Greece without having some Souvlaki? Succulent, marinated pork grilled to absolute perfection and nestled, or almost literally nestled, in warm pita bread. This little guy, is that that’s just the opening act!
  • Meze Platter: A taste explosion. Olives that practically sing of sunshine, creamy tzatziki, dolmades stuffed with fragrant rice, and melitzanosalata so delicious, you could, in a way, eat a bucket of it!
  • Local Cheeses: That area of Greece? Rhodes, tends to be known for some seriously delicious cheeses. We sampled a few different kinds, some milder, some sharper. They were quite amazing when drizzled, or very nearly drizzled, with local honey. It’s like tasting pure bliss!
  • Pitaroudia: A Rhodian specialty, that is a fritter made with chickpeas and different tasty vegetables. These are crispy outside, quite soft inside and bursting with the flavour. It’s almost comfort food.
  • Loukoumades: Don’t you, like your want something for afters? Sweet, fluffy dough balls deep-fried and then drizzled with honey and sprinkled, it tends to be with cinnamon. Oh my days, they were so addictive! Seriously addictive!

I also thought it was just fantastic how Nikos, who was guiding the tour, shared insight for just about everything we ate. It really made the food so very much better to hear where things came from. Very locally produced, he seemed very serious and very careful when telling us of this information. He would also answer every question we threw at him, every last one. Even the silly ones. I definitely learnt a bit.

Historical Tidbits and Hidden Alleys

Historical Tidbits

Okay, so it was not solely about stuffing my face. Though believe me I, really I, was grateful for this! Nikos, as a matter of fact, weaved together tales of the town’s history between the food stops. That town, by the way, has layers, almost literally layers, upon layers of civilization! You may well get to see spots that, almost in a way, you might have completely missed if you had gone wandering by yourself. He also took us, like he physically lead us, down pretty tiny side streets and that were simply crammed full of atmosphere.

I actually enjoyed getting to understand some of the historical facts behind so many sights and scenes. It added just a great degree more meaning than just looking around, not knowing very much of the hows, whys and whens of them. This also set the stage, like it prepared the space, for some simply brilliant photos!

Value for Money? Let’s Crunch Numbers (Kind Of)

Money

So, is this food tour that is, actually worth forking out the cash? Or at least handing over the euros! It usually boils down, like in many respects to boil down, to what you’re hoping to get out of this. In my situation, this worked because:

  • Sampling Many Local Eats: You could, like your, just wander into several eateries yourself, naturally. However, you could end up potentially spending even more cash while not even knowing what’s good or worth it! The tour guides tends to be able to take you straight to some absolute local stars.
  • Learning Something As Well As Eating Something: You might learn history regarding the place, culture insights as well as foodie info.
  • Meeting Fellow Food Lovers: Getting to meet new friends can often, like is usually, something amazing that happens when you travel and it can bring new colour to what is already bright!

When I add up that tasty eats with the local historical flavour as well as social thing, I think this is, is that, in a way value! That said, if you are hoping for fancy dining, you might be a bit sad. However if hoping to actually, like completely get involved within real local cooking as well as experience, then get ready to have a tasty time.

Final Thoughts: Would I Recommend It?

Okay, so here it comes, the actual answer! Would I then recommend that Rhodes Medieval Town food walking thing? Completely! It’s a fabulous, and just fabulous, method to immerse into some tasty Rhodian cooking while finding out so much of what goes to make up the old Town’s story. It’s great for first time visitors or those who tend to be hoping to, in some ways, get further into that lovely location!

I mean, actually the best part? You don’t need to consider anything about where you are likely to get to eat or research anything regarding any good spots. Someone will just take you. It’s like having your own foodie pal! So bring on the spanakopita!
