Review: Marble Mountains, Monkey Mountains & Am Phu Cave Tour
Visiting Da Nang, Vietnam? Well, that means the Marble Mountains, Monkey Mountains, and the rather intriguing Am Phu Cave are likely on your radar, very likely! You see, I gave this morning tour a go recently, and so I thought I’d share what I reckon might be some useful insight for others, like your planning their trip. After all, experiences can be a mixed bag, can’t they?
The Marble Mountains: A Climb with a View
First off, the Marble Mountains; they’re more like limestone outcrops, I reckon, poking rather dramatically from the landscape, just a little. You climb them and not in an extremely hard way, so I guess “hike” is maybe a better description, arguably. Anyway, the climb is pretty moderate, and even with my fitness that isn’t something spectacular, it felt rather doable. There are some steps, and at times, it’s a slightly steep, so do bear that in mind, basically.
What hits you first is the view; apparently it stretches all the way to the sea, that is if the haze isn’t in the way. And then you have those pagodas; very pretty structures are they, each with its own history and little story. The guides they do a decent job filling you in on that, too it’s almost. Apparently there are caves, too, housing shrines. These are cool, actually quite cool!
What is quite a big watch out for is the marble sellers at the base. These traders are quite persistent; still, a polite but firm “no, thank you” works quite well. You get some really incredible craftsmanship, actually, very incredibly impressive, if you’re into that sort of thing. I’m really not sure where I would put a huge marble dragon in my house, and stuff.
Monkey Mountain (Son Tra Mountain): Where the Monkeys At?
Next up is Monkey Mountain, more formally known as Son Tra Mountain. Now, if you expect tons and tons of monkeys swinging from every tree, arguably you will be disappointed, perhaps rather disappointed! While there are monkeys, you really need a guide with very good eyesight, and maybe just a little patience, or arguably you will miss them, very likely.
This place provides a stunning panoramic of Da Nang’s coastline, it really does. Plus, the giant Lady Buddha statue there; you can spot it for miles, actually! It adds that quite special sense of peace to the place. Very impressive, so it feels extremely calm up there, arguably.
Honestly, though, the drive up the mountain, winding through lush forests, might be just a highlight, is that? I would say it almost is, but only you yourself will decide whether you feel the same!
Am Phu Cave: A Glimpse into Hell
Now, this is probably a pretty interesting part of the tour; the Am Phu Cave, so they say, which roughly translates to “hell cave”. Is it scary? I guess a little. The cave contains recreations, more or less depicting the torments of hell based on Buddhist beliefs, arguably.
The lighting in this place is, in a way, really dramatic, which really enhances the atmosphere. As I was saying, the figures are pretty graphic and pretty unsettling at times, if I’m perfectly honest with you, still quite the experience!
Is it suitable for kids? Well, that depends on the child; anyway, it’s something very much worth considering if you’re planning on bringing youngsters along, right?
Tour Logistics: What to Expect
Okay, let’s chat logistics, is that? Pick-up from hotels is pretty common, and mine was pretty smooth. The tour guides; these guides speak pretty reasonable English. They tend to give you enough info without overloading you, arguably a good balance.
Comfortable shoes are very essential! As I have told you already, you are doing some climbing, so leave the flip-flops at home, as a matter of fact. Bring water, particularly if it’s a pretty hot day, is that? Apparently Vietnam can get pretty warm!
Timewise, it’s generally a half-day trip, right? And what you get is plenty of time to see stuff without feeling mega rushed. If you’re pondering doing this one your own, consider that you could save money, but perhaps you would miss the guide’s local know-how, basically. Just something worth thinking over, is it?
Value for Money? My Verdict
So, the big question, actually is; is it good value for money? I believe that in some respects it kind of is, arguably it kind of is! If you book an affordable tour, I believe it gets you to several spots quickly, and offers some context that you likely would miss otherwise, by the way.
However, perhaps you should haggle on prices, too it’s almost. Da Nang has that haggling kind of culture; however, maybe you feel that a bit unpleasant? You would save a bit, even so. I didn’t push too hard myself; as a matter of fact, you can go a little hard!
The Bottom Line
Overall, the ‘Marble Mountains, Monkey Mountains Am Phu Cave Morning Tour’ is an awesome pick for travelers looking for an immersive peek into Da Nang’s natural scenery and cultural gems. The tour strikes a satisfying mix of stunning sights and deep cultural insights. If you want a smooth and engaging journey with the ease of expert tour guiding, look no further as this one promises great value.
