Review: Madrid’s Old Town, Poets District & Royal Palace

Okay so, Madrid. It’s not just the capital of Spain; it’s this place crammed with stories, artwork, and, oh yeah, amazing food too it’s almost like walking right into a history book where, hey, you get to snack. That said, I recently got to wander around the Old Town, check out the so-called Poets’ District, and even sneak a peek inside the Royal Palace, is that right? I thought I’d share what that was kinda like for you all. Very exciting stuff!

Wandering through Madrid’s Old Town

Plaza Mayor Madrid

Walking into Madrid’s Old Town is almost like stepping straight backward in time yet with pretty amazing gelato shops every few steps. Plaza Mayor, yeah, that’s this massive square that feels more like an outdoor party than a place; you get street performers doing their thing, people snapping photos, and that general happy buzz you usually get when you add sunshine and very old buildings, right?

I then swung by the Mercado de San Miguel which, by the way, is this iron-and-glass building totally crammed with food stalls where I found gazpacho. You should totally try some if you find yourself nearby; you can sample all sorts of tasty things here, so I very much recommend coming hungry and ready to try anything!

Must-See Spots and Hidden Gems

Madrid Old Town Streets

Very quickly for spots you absolutely should check out in the Old Town, there’s the Plaza de la Villa; it’s not very famous, yet it’s totally worth a detour. The architecture there will kinda give you all those proper Old-World vibes and you could feel you had been dropped into Europe. Next, take your time, if you’re anything like me you like strolling the little streets that connect the larger plazas, alright?

Okay so you know, just kinda losing yourself can really turn up cool little shops or, if you need it, cafes. Basically, keep your camera ready ’cause Madrid is one super picturesque place to explore. That said you’re in for a treat.

The Literary Charm of the Poets’ District (Barrio de las Letras)

Calle Huertas Madrid

Next up? It’s the Poets’ District! Also known as Barrio de las Letras it’s very interesting; writers like Lope de Vega and Cervantes apparently used to wander around here way back when and you’ll feel the echo of old Spanish poetry just by strolling down the streets too it’s almost palpable. I walked down Calle de Huertas, this street where they have quotations from big-deal Spanish writers inlaid into the pavement, yeah?

It’s kinda nerdy to get excited about but is that not kinda amazing anyway, yeah? You know, seeing words from centuries ago right there beneath your feet! Anyway, it kinda feels you’re walking the very same roads they trod so long ago which is something, right?

Exploring Historic Literary Haunts

Casa Museo Lope de Vega

When in the Poets’ District, is that right? Make certain you swing by Casa Museo Lope de Vega too it’s almost the real deal; that’s the actual house where Lope de Vega lived. In some respects you can even take a tour and kinda get a look into the life of a superstar playwright from way back then, it’s really very cool; it can make it all come alive a bit more too it’s almost a real experience! Another kinda must-see? That is the Ateneo de Madrid. That is, in a way, a private club; very beautiful and historic.

Yeah okay, but they very often have events or open days where people can, if nothing else, sneak a peek. Or you could try making friends with a member? A small stroll via these old streets very often inspires deep thought, you know?

A Royal Visit: The Royal Palace of Madrid

Royal Palace of Madrid

Then you have the Royal Palace. The Palacio Real. This isn’t just some okay, place; this is, arguably, the Spanish Royal Family’s official residence; they don’t even live there now! Very weird! Very pretty, from what I remember it gets used for events. So, very large? Absolutely. Very Impressive? It goes without saying.

Yeah okay, but I totally took the tour. The rooms you’ll be wandering through are decked out like straight out of a fairy tale, I promise. Chandeliers? Huge! Artwork? It’s like they filled the place with wall-to-wall history and elegance for you to enjoy.

Highlights of the Palace Tour

Royal Palace of Madrid Interior

Make sure you pay attention when you get to the Throne Room; the decor makes you feel like, if nothing else, you’ve walked into the most posh place available at the time. Yeah okay, but that is not even kinda kidding; the Hall of Mirrors, now, you’ll kinda get to feel like royalty looking around, is that right? Very shiny, so they say. Anyway, before you leave the Royal Palace area, stroll through the gardens, yeah? ‘Cause they’re kept neat, so you’re in for some relaxation.

Yeah okay, but when you think you’re nearly done check the views which are cool too it’s almost worth bringing your phone for pictures anyway, or for showing other people like your mum. If you’ve got a good zoom lens? Bonus!

I very much enjoyed this exploration into Madrid’s history; it’s a way of learning about culture. I really wanna come back again next year to revisit.
