Review: Jozani Forest, Salaam Cave & The Rock Restaurant

Alright, you, so if you’re planning a trip to Zanzibar and are after seeing a little bit of everything the island has to offer, chances are the Jozani Forest, Salaam Cave, and The Rock Restaurant are going to be right up your street. They really are experiences you’ll be talking about long after you’ve left the sunny shores. I mean, each spot offers something completely unique, that really adds to the overall charm and appeal of Zanzibar.

The Jozani Forest, well, that’s where you can get a close look at some seriously awesome wildlife. Think cute monkeys swinging through the trees! The Salaam Cave, then, is perfect for history buffs or anyone wanting to feel like an explorer. Finally, The Rock Restaurant… oh, the Rock Restaurant! It is what it sounds like. Picture this: a restaurant sitting on a rock out in the ocean. Sounds a little bit unreal, right? These spots aren’t just places to tick off a list, that’s what I think; they really bring the essence of Zanzibar to life.

Jozani Forest: Monkeying Around

Jozani Forest Red Colobus Monkeys

Visiting Jozani Forest is like, well, stepping into a different place, I would say. You swap the open sky for the lush greenery of the forest. The air seems somehow fresher here. A place filled with all kinds of plant and animal life. However, very likely the stars of the show are the Red Colobus monkeys. They’re a special kind of monkey found only in Zanzibar.

They’re incredibly habituated to people so, like, you’re very likely going to get the chance to see them up close, that’s the great thing about them. Our guide knew all the cool facts about the monkeys too, telling us about their habits and how they’re protected. This bit, arguably, really brings the whole experience up a level. In fact, it turned a casual walk in the forest into, like, an enlightening adventure!

There are raised wooden walkways that also lead you through a mangrove swamp, too it’s almost another highlight of the forest. Seeing how the mangrove trees adapt to the salty water, is definitely fascinating. Also, for those after capturing Instagram-worthy shots, that can happen here, you. Think cool tree roots twisting every which way – it really does scream, ‘take my picture’ doesn’t it?

Salaam Cave: Into the Depths

Salaam Cave Zanzibar

If you fancy adding a little bit of underground adventure to your Zanzibar trip, then Salaam Cave could well be for you. Now, I think a quick word to the wise before visiting. When they say “cave,” just be prepared, they mean it. That could be said, it’s a natural cave so it might not be suitable for folks that are squeamish about little dark spaces.

Once inside the cave, very often you see some truly impressive rock formations that have developed over who-knows-how-long. Some areas might get a little cramped so, in a way, be ready to do a bit of ducking and weaving. Some might say that adds to the thrill, of course. Guides often share some stories about the cave’s origin or how it has, you know, been significant to the local people of Zanzibar, and that brings a touch of history to your adventure, that’s clear.

Oh, you, it could also be good to know: it is rather humid inside, so maybe dress accordingly; wearing something light might well be your best bet. Sturdy shoes could be the shout too. Plus, if, for example, you’re thinking of bringing a camera to take pictures, just make sure it can handle the low light. Taking pictures inside the cave can be challenging, naturally!

The Rock Restaurant: A Dining Experience Unlike Any Other

The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar

Picture this, if you can. You’re seated in a restaurant perched on, very, very much, a rock in the middle of the ocean. That’s the Rock Restaurant in Zanzibar. As a matter of fact, just getting to the restaurant is an adventure. Depending on the tide, you might wade through the water, that seems fun, or even take a little boat. Sounds neat, huh?

It seems like it would be worth going, as once you’re inside, the views are gorgeous, looking right out over the water. Very, very often the food gets rave reviews. The focus, it appears, is naturally on seafood dishes but also seemingly with a nice touch of local flavour added in too. To the point: don’t go there for just food but the experience as well. The seafood there is out of this world, arguably!

Oh, I suppose I should also let you know it could be a popular spot so maybe you should make sure to book beforehand. The Rock Restaurant is, apparently, perfect for a romantic evening, that could well be true, or maybe if, for example, you wanted to celebrate a special occasion. You get both beautiful scenery, in one respect, and delicious food to enjoy, alright? The Rock Restaurant really adds a ‘wow’ to your visit to Zanzibar!
