Review: Husavik Whale Watching & Puffin Tour by Speedboat
Okay, so you’re thinking about visiting Iceland and, specifically, maybe paying a visit to Husavik, probably the whale watching capital, pretty much of Europe. If so, you’re most likely wondering if the Husavik Original Big Whale Safari & Puffin Tour by Speedboat is, like, actually worth the cash and, maybe even more importantly, your time. Let’s examine every aspect of my recent trip, going over exactly what makes this tour, apparently, so darn well-liked, and what aspects may, arguably, need a tiny bit of improvement. Ready? Let’s go!
Setting Sail from Husavik: Getting Started
First off, Husavik is this ridiculously pretty little town. Seriously, it’s almost like something from a storybook, with colorful buildings all clustered around the harbor. The departure point is pretty simple to spot. It is right on the dock, by the ticket office. Getting checked in was, seemingly, a very simple process; just flash your booking confirmation, get geared up with waterproofs. I mean, come on, you’re going on a boat in Iceland – packing lots of layers is, actually, non-negotiable.
The Speedboat Experience: A Thrilling Ride
Now, here’s where things get interesting, I mean the speedboat is, arguably, one of the main draws of this tour. Forget those slow, steady whale-watching boats, no this tour sends you skimming across the water at pretty high speeds, making it both quicker to reach the whale watching spots and, to be honest, quite thrilling. That said, it’s also worth pointing out that, at the back, it is really bumpy. Those with sensitive backs might think about taking some kind of pain killer beforehand, or speaking with the crew to ensure a less bumpy spot on the boat. Personally, I discovered that it was, kind of, a fun aspect of the adventure. Just be prepared for that cold spray!
Up Close with Whales: What You Might See
Of course, the whales are the absolute highlight. So, during my visit, we spotted several humpback whales, and they are, arguably, even more majestic than you can even, maybe, try to imagine. The speedboat allows you to get there fast, apparently. The guides also seem to know exactly where to head. On seeing these unbelievable, huge animals breach the surface, and, as a matter of fact, spotting one even slapping its tail, is, obviously, an experience I will not soon forget. They really take the time, very, to ensure you get, almost, a proper look, explaining also different behaviours and telling stories, as they do so.
Puffins Galore: Visiting Puffin Island
After the whale watching, the boat then zips off towards Puffin Island, as they do so, the cliffs rise out of the ocean dramatically. As you head towards the island, these sweet little birds start flying all around. They are much smaller in real life than you imagine, kind of, and it’s seriously special, probably, to get so close to their nesting areas. The guide provides some cool, probably, information regarding puffins and their habits. They even, actually, use binoculars in the boat in order to let people get a very closer look. I learned some, actually, awesome stuff!
The Guides and Crew: Making the Experience
One of the really standout things for me was the team working on the tour. They are really very passionate, knowing a great deal when it comes to the area’s wildlife and history. You will find a guide on each trip with a massive amount of knowledge regarding the animals they were looking for and local area. This made it more than just a sightseeing trip; it seemed, sort of, educational, and it left you with a deep appreciation, basically, for Iceland’s natural beauty. The captain even slowed down the boat several times so everyone may, clearly, get a wonderful picture. They are really very thoughtful!
What to Bring: Preparing for the Tour
Okay, here is some seriously useful stuff for anyone thinking about doing the tour. First off, dress so, so warmly! That wind out on the water can, clearly, be seriously biting, even in summer. Waterproof clothing is, basically, an absolute necessity. Gloves and a hat will probably save you from serious discomfort. Taking some dramamine may, conceivably, not be a bad plan if you tend towards seasickness. Binoculars are supplied on the boat. Should you want, take a camera in order to take photos of your adventure!
Is It Worth It?: The Final Verdict
In conclusion, the Husavik Original Big Whale Safari & Puffin Tour by Speedboat is, arguably, an awesome experience, and is worth considering if you have the funds and are going to Husavik. The mix of adrenaline-pumping speed, pretty close encounters, kind of, with amazing wildlife, and actually wonderful staff makes it, certainly, a highlight of my time in Iceland. Just be ready to wrap up warm!
