Review: Discovering the Ancient Wonders of Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, and Avukana

The Majesty of Sigiriya: Lion Rock Unveiled

The very first stop? Basically, Sigiriya, that majestic Lion Rock! The view from the top? I mean, spectacular. The whole area that tends to surround the rock, is so pretty, almost like a dreamy oil painting of greens and blues for ages. The climb, actually, it’s not really a walk in the park; rather, I think of it more like you are slowly going upward on a vertical hike! However, those ancient frescoes and the massive lion paws carved into the rock? They are genuinely very worthy of every single step. Just a little word to the wise, go very early to more or less beat the heat and the crowds because in this place, the tourists can apparently come in droves. In that case, you are planning a trip; you need comfy shoes and lots of water, seriously. The sun is intense up there!

Anuradhapura: Stepping Back in Time in an Ancient City

Then, anyway, I moved on to Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s old capitals. So, unlike Sigiriya, which kind of hits you right away with its visual drama, Anuradhapura, is, well, more understated. That is, its attraction lies in the sprawling complexes of temples and monasteries, is that right? You, you are looking at centuries of history here. That massive Jetavanaramaya stupa? It kind of took my breath away, mostly because of its massive size. Roaming these age-old sites really gets you thinking a bit regarding the rich culture and heritage of the place. So, like, I rented a bike to get around because the area that surrounds it is very huge and cycling allowed me to absorb every thing at my own pace. Is that I felt a very great sense of calm amidst those sacred grounds; It felt really almost spiritual.

Avukana Buddha: A Standout Wonder

The last stop, basically? Avukana. That massive standing Buddha statue is quite literally a gem. A bit of a drive outside of Anuradhapura, yet is still totally worth it. That very detailed carving and the sense of peace that seems to emanate from the statue make you feel as if you are really looking at something remarkable. So, you have to wonder, how did people so many years ago basically build this in ancient times? I just stood there for a long time just to absorb the art and tranquility of it all, is that right? More or less a powerful and unforgettable experience for someone from a country so distant, and that seemingly did not have to think of things that far back. If anything is real, it is art.

Next, you’ll want a very, very reliable driver or tour guide. The distances that may lie between these places can actually be deceiving, and a good local can enhance the experience to more or less provide valuable cultural context and stories.
