Review: A Day Trip to Ho Chi Minh’s Black Virgin Mount and Cao Dai Holy Mass

Thinking about escaping the urban jungle of Ho Chi Minh City for a bit? How about, maybe, taking a day to see something totally different? Like your typical traveler, that’s exactly what I decided to do, heading out to two pretty distinctive spots: the Black Virgin Mount and the Cao Dai Holy Mass. It’s almost like hopping into another little amazing facet of Vietnam, filled with both really amazing landscape views and an unusual spiritual vibe.

Getting to Tay Ninh: My Journey Begins

Tay Ninh Vietnam

Okay, so the starting point is figuring out how to even get to Tay Ninh, where both of these destinations are, you know, actually situated. There are several ways to do this. Loads of folks book tours directly from Ho Chi Minh City, which can be, in some respects, quite helpful. You just hop on a bus, and somebody else sorts out all the, like, timetables and directions for you. Tours tend to be reasonably priced, and usually, very nearly everything is bundled into one package. For me, I prefer a bit more freedom. So, I took a local bus. It was fairly easy to grab a bus from the Mien Dong Bus Station, and they leave, often, nearly every hour. Sure, it takes a little longer, like a solid two or three hours, but it does provide an opportunity to soak in the countryside views and actually get a feel for local life, you know?

Now, if you go the bus route, be, in a way, prepared for a slightly different experience than what you might be used to. Things tend to be a bit more chaotic, the air con may or may not be working brilliantly, and you might find yourself sharing seats with chickens or, well, just anything, and stuff! Still, that’s, as a matter of fact, very nearly all part of the whole adventure, isn’t it? On arrival in Tay Ninh, you can snag a xe om (motorbike taxi) or a regular taxi to reach both the Black Virgin Mount and the Cao Dai Temple. It’s, literally, always good to negotiate the fare upfront, you know?

Scaling the Black Virgin Mount (Nui Ba Den)

Nui Ba Den

Nui Ba Den, known, too, as Black Virgin Mountain, looms fairly prominently over the surrounding plains; too it’s kind of hard to miss. Legend says a woman named Linh Son Thanh Mau, that, basically, symbolizes strength and virtue, protects the mountain. These days, loads of travelers go to both pay respects and, well, take in some fantastic views. There are a few ways to get to the top. If you’re feeling energetic, it’s almost possible to hike. The trail can be somewhat challenging, though, arguably it takes around three to four hours depending, anyway, on your fitness level and just how often you decide to stop for a breather.

If, in some respects, you are thinking you’d prefer something a little less strenuous, there’s a cable car service available. This is fairly convenient and whisks you right up, in short, to the summit pretty rapidly. The views from the top are, definitely, absolutely worth the trip. You get, you know, sweeping vistas of the countryside, so lush rice paddies, and all just laid out, clearly, almost underneath you. There’s a massive Buddha statue at the top, so really pretty majestic, as a matter of fact, along with a few temples where you can really just soak in the quiet spiritual vibes. I walked around for a fair amount of time just to absorb it, okay?

A tip for visitors, just in case, wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing some walking, even if you take the cable car. Also, keep hydrated, mostly if you plan to hike. A hat and sunscreen are, basically, usually great ideas as the sun can get pretty intense. Finally, do take your time exploring the different temples and statues. Each spot has a, like, certain beauty and something slightly different to offer. Oh! and if, frankly, you are up for it, get up early. Doing this hike at sunrise really takes the breath away!

Witnessing the Cao Dai Holy Mass

Cao Dai Temple

After descending from the Black Virgin Mount, the next destination on my day trip was, specifically, clearly the Cao Dai Temple in Tay Ninh. Cao Dai is, literally, like, a religion that blends a bit of Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity, Islam, and Taoism – all rolled into one, so pretty unique. The temple itself is a, very, quite incredible sight, too it’s almost incredibly ornate architecture and vividly colored façades. I ended up being there for the midday ceremony, that starts, typically, right around 12 pm. Trust me, okay?, that is when you seriously want to be there.

Visitors can observe the ceremony from the balcony above the main hall. The sight is quite spectacular: priests dressed in brightly colored robes chanting and performing rituals. It’s honestly so interesting watching the followers in their white garments bowing in unison; like watching some kind of sacred dance or very quiet coordinated expression. Taking snaps is, literally, just fine, so long as you are respectful. Talking isn’t really encouraged during the ceremony; you should try and maintain, in a way, like a quiet atmosphere.

What I definitely, absolutely found fascinating was, honestly, really understanding a bit more about the beliefs and philosophies which under pin Cao Dai. It kind of really promotes tolerance, harmony, and kindness – concepts I felt kinda resonated through the entire ceremony, you know? Honestly, it really provides an almost thought-provoking glance into a, extremely, completely different religious perspective.

Important visitor advice, actually dress modestly so shoulders covered and long pants or skirts. Taking off your shoes is pretty customary before entering the temple. And really respect the worshippers by not getting in the way during the ceremony or interrupting their rituals. It may very well seem self explanatory, anyway being considerate to everyone helps preserve the whole unique spiritual atmosphere. If you feel like, sort of, expanding your trip there’s a botanical garden to take your time at. Too it’s almost very serene for meditation too.

Food Adventures in Tay Ninh

Vietnamese Food

So, after exploring, I got the hunger pangs, that really comes, too, as no major surprise. Luckily, Tay Ninh does have loads of pretty amazing local eats, too it’s a fantastic experience just eating food local to there. Now, there are stalls and restaurants near the Black Virgin Mountain offering pretty good simple meals at reasonable costs. Most of the local places offer, sort of, just genuinely really tasty Vietnamese food. You see some vendors actually cooking on their tables! If you are feeling adventurous you definitely, certainly can seek out local delicacies like Banh Trang Phơi Sương (rice paper dipped in dew) that really tastes fantastic! To sample authentic, really Vietnamese cuisine then heading into Tay Ninh town offers more choice, though it’s fairly good most places.

Make, obviously, absolutely sure to sample the local fruits as well, as matter of fact, especially if they are actually in season. They’re literally packed with so many flavors, that comes as fairly good value. I also made sure, certainly, definitely to try some fresh coconut water straight from a coconut. It’s like the ultimate thirst quencher, certainly. If, too it’s almost you have time, think about taking a little stroll around the local market. Not, definitely, only do you see some local ingredients but can sample what there is too offer. All of that helps appreciate even more their, actually, quite amazing local gastronomy. You, like your body thanks you for such great flavor!

Don’t feel like it, that Vietnamese cuisine, for such cheap prices! Well what makes them do, is, seriously the freshest ingredients that come really straight to your very hands!

If you have literally just a few days here its definitely worthy too see these. Now, it really offers a, extremely, completely awesome blend of nature, religion, and culture. Okay, so it allows you to escape, more or less, virtually the intensity of the city. Take, more or less, this brief journey: this can, obviously, enrich your understanding too offer. Actually take and enjoy an entire perspective on Vietnam from so close.
