Puerto Vallarta Pirate Show of the Bay: Is it Worth It? A Candid Review

Puerto Vallarta Pirate Ship

Alright, so you’re considering the Pirate Show in Puerto Vallarta, are you? You’re probably picturing a bit of high-seas fun, perhaps even a family adventure? Well, I went, I saw, and now I’m sharing all the details so that you can make an informed choice about your vacation time and, too, hard-earned cash. This isn’t your typical tourist trap rundown; it’s more of, like, an honest chat about whether this show actually lives up to the hype.

What Is the Pirate Show, Basically?

Pirate Ship Show

In essence, the Pirate Show of the Bay is, kind of, a dinner show taking place aboard a, pretty big, ship styled to look like a pirate vessel, too it’s almost as if you stepped into a, pretty good, movie. Departing from Puerto Vallarta, it takes you on, such as, a cruise around Banderas Bay with entertainment provided in the form of pirate antics, acrobatics, music, and, even, a fireworks display. Sounds like a, nice, blast, doesn’t it? They really try to immerse you, and it’s, very, targeted to appeal to tourists looking for a, super exciting, night out with, likely your, family.

The Good Stuff: What I Liked

Puerto Vallarta Pirate Show fireworks

OK, first off, the fireworks are really very spectacular. You’re out on the bay, under the stars, and these bursts of light explode overhead; that, too it’s almost, a pretty memorable experience. The crew works, like your, socks off. Seriously, those pirates are, very, energetic. They stay in character, engage with the audience, and put in a real effort to keep the vibe lively. For kids (and some adults), the whole pirate thing is just, a little, bit of a thrill. There are sword fights (choreographed, obviously), pirate jokes, and, like, just enough cheesy drama to keep everyone entertained, so to speak.

The cruise around Banderas Bay, on the other hand, offers really scenic views, too. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, while bobbing gently on the waves, is quite special. That, arguably, could be a highlight all on its own, without the pirate show! But put those two together and you may have a, fairly, great night.

Where it Could Be Better: The Downsides

pirate food

Let’s be, literally, honest about this: the food is more or less edible, yet is probably not something to write home about. It’s mass-produced to feed a, very, large crowd, and it shows. If you’re expecting gourmet dining, this really probably is not the place. Adjust your expectations to “theme park food on a boat”, or, just a little, something similar.

That also tends to get rather crowded, too. If you are someone who doesn’t like, like, being packed in with lots of other people, this might be, actually, a challenging experience. Be prepared to get cozy with your fellow pirates (or tourists dressed like pirates!). Some parts of the show really do feel staged and predictable, as well. If you are expecting some, like, really authentic, and spontaneous pirate action, you might, possibly, be a bit disappointed. But the crew is good at selling it, even if it’s kind of repetitive.

If you get seasick even a, little bit, definitely take some precautions ahead of time, then. That boat does move, and the combination of open water, smells of food, and stage smoke could trigger some nausea. Be prepared! Consider getting seasickness meds and maybe something to eat before going aboard, basically.

Is it Good for Families, very?

Family on pirate ship

In some respects, this really leans towards families. Kids eat this stuff up. The costumes, the fake fighting, and the late night are exciting and, arguably, a unique experience for them. So, yeah, this is usually a, quite nice, option for families with kids aged 5-14.

If your kids are younger, the late night and, such as, loud noises could be problematic, then. And if you’re traveling with teenagers who have aged out of the pirate phase, they may just, actually, roll their eyes a lot. But overall, it’s pitched at a, slightly, younger audience, that, as a matter of fact.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Pirate Adventure

Pirate show tips

  • Book in Advance: Especially during peak season, securing your tickets early really probably is essential. Plus, you often get better deals online, usually.
  • Arrive Early: Getting to the dock, actually, well before departure, usually helps you snag a better seat on the ship, definitely.
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear clothing, actually, that allows you to move freely, and that won’t get you too hot, probably. The air on the water tends to be cooler, yet you may also want to dress pirate-y.
  • Consider the Upgrade: Weigh the pros and cons of VIP packages. Sometimes the extra cost is usually worth it for the better seats and, such as, better service, as a matter of fact.
  • Prepare for Seasickness: If you’re prone to motion sickness, taking preventative medication and, seemingly, eating a light snack before departure is worth it.
  • Bring a Camera: The sunset, fireworks, and pirate shenanigans, actually, are worth capturing. I forgot mine at home!

So, Is the Pirate Show Worth It?

At the end of the day, this Pirate Show is actually one of those experiences, in short, which, maybe, depends on your expectations. If you go expecting fine dining and, more or less, Tony Award-winning performances, you’ll, for sure, be disappointed. But, if you are after a fun, a little, bit cheesy, and, mostly, memorable evening out on the water with, arguably, some swashbuckling action, it might, could be, worth the price of admission, arguably.

We went into it viewing it as a, quite nice, spectacle aimed squarely at entertaining the masses, and the masses did, probably, look like they were entertained. My kiddo loved it and is already asking when we are going back. So, I’d say for families with kids, it’s usually a, very, safe bet for at least one, like your, family member.
