My Night at the Lucha Libre: A Blow-by-Blow

I chose what looked a little like a mid-range option; I wanted a bit of guidance, so that I don’t spend more time wandering aimlessly than necessary, yet wanted to keep things reasonably priced and rather real. Our group first met in the center of Puebla. Right there, you’ll be thrown right into what almost feels like a sensory overload. Street vendors shouted, music blared. The first stop was at a small, classic, you know, “pulquería”. If you’re not too familiar, pulque is this fermented beverage that is been around quite a long time. Right, before colonization, people in Mexico thought that pulque had some special, you know, sacred powers, or that it had magical abilities. To be honest, I am very, very far from acquiring the taste for it. In my defense, this viscous, milky stuff tastes kind of earthy, plus fermented in ways that were almost too much for me, to be honest. Some loved it, yet most were tentatively pretending to appreciate it, as I was too.

The next stop, it turned out to be even more eye-opening: La Pasita. It’s like your properly ancient and iconic institution. Pasita itself, it’s like a crazy sweet raisin liqueur served with, guess what? A single raisin plus a piece of cheese, pinned by a toothpick right into the glass. Very, very old-school. I was taken by how very local it all felt. Even though many of us there were obvious tourists. You see everyone from elderly folks, that are simply unwinding after what may have been a pretty tiring day, to young couples on what could be called a cute date.

After that, it was showtime! The wrestling arena kind of felt more intimate than what I figured it would. You got pretty close to all that action and you were literally part of what everyone else felt like at that very moment. The crowd was super energetic and vocal. Basically, everyone was invested in those theatrics playing right in front of their very eyes, I guess.

From acrobatic stunts to over-the-top villainy, that spectacle was, to say the least, quite amusing. Also, it did give you some background about those ongoing rivalries that were happening there that night. It wasn’t just some random wrestling moves thrown around. You would have different storylines to it. Oh, by the way, there’s food. Yes, plenty of munching options, like tacos plus tortas. Basically, simple stuff for simple folks.

Pulque and Pasita: More Than Just Drinks?

Now, I will tell you that the drinks alone were probably a really significant highlight. Tasting pulque plus pasita, it’s almost like taking a trip back through time. I mean, these aren’t just ordinary beverages; you will probably think of them as sort of liquid history that will provide an insight on Puebla’s proper cultural identity. Plus these two locales added to that evening quite a nice layer of local charm. Honestly, without these spots, the tour would probably just feel incomplete and very cookie-cutter like.

Is the Puebla Lucha Libre Show Worth Your Dough?

All in all, if you’re trying to find a pretty authentic plus really spirited taste of Mexican culture, then the Lucha Libre experience, including pulque plus pasita, is very much a solid contender. I think it’s very good if you are with a group of friends or family that really like this sort of quirky, energetic activities, very. Yes, there may be maybe slightly cheaper ways to just experience Lucha Libre, as such, but these particular tours, that kind of emphasize the cultural flavors of Mexico, often, do enhance the whole event quite significantly.
