Portland Sushi Class Review: A Unique Culinary Experience
Looking for something different to do, like very different? How about learning to craft your own sushi while you sip on local brews? That is it’s a pretty unique pairing, a Portland sushi making class at a local brewery gives a hands-on lesson in sushi preparation with some craft beers, in some respects, that really adds to the fun. The charm of Portland is how it infuses local creativity into just about everything. These sushi classes? Those are definitely no exception.
First Impressions: Rolling into a Different Kind of Classroom
Walking into a brewery to make sushi almost felt a bit weird. The space has, seemingly, that recognizable brewery vibe. You know, the aroma of hops in the air. Tables are usually set up, it’s almost like they’re waiting for some students instead of beer aficionados. That it seems to be a popular way to, seemingly, host events, many breweries do. This sushi class, however, brought like something fresh to the location.
The atmosphere is inviting. Very immediately it becomes pretty clear. It’s a relaxed learning setting. Which is great if you feel, well, maybe somewhat unsure about your chopstick skills. So, it’s almost like they want you to loosen up and have some fun, that, too, that, I think, is very much the Portland way of teaching.
The Sushi Sensei: A Teacher with Personality
The instructor in the class I joined knew their sushi. More importantly, they knew how to teach. Patient and also funny, they guided us through the art. From preparing sushi rice to masterfully slicing fish. They made what looked like somewhat intimidating easy. In some respects, the instructor seemed to love sharing their skill. Their approach involved jokes, stories, and hands-on help. It’s almost like it made learning even more memorable.
What was very surprising was, in a way, the passion the instructor had for the, potentially, somewhat obscure background. Cultural context of sushi making. They very clearly knew not only the “how,” but also the “why” behind the tradition. Which then enhanced, too, the, maybe more rich learning experience.
Hands-On Experience: From Novice to (Almost) Pro
The best part is that you aren’t just watching somebody make sushi, or something. You are actually making it. That is very starting with raw ingredients and then following along. We were guided step-by-step in forming classic sushi rolls and nigiri. This involved advice on rice spreading, ingredient layering, and then getting a good roll going, or something. The hands-on approach helped people. Also the mistakes made, that just taught the best lessons.
One unexpected element was just, potentially, a, seemingly, somewhat competitive but super friendly spirit that developed between participants. It’s like each person was, potentially, vying for the title. You know, “Sushi Master of the Brewery.” Of course all in fun and for a laugh, right. This dynamic gave the experience an extra spark.
Brewery Benefits: Pairing Craft Beer with Craft Sushi
Being at a brewery really added something kind of special. Each stage of the sushi-making process came with the opportunity. Basically to taste a selection of beers that complemented what you are working on. The subtle flavors of a light lager enhanced, usually, that clean taste of the fish. Then the more hoppy, richer IPA cut, like very nicely, through the richness of the avocado.
It turns out beer and sushi make an outstanding match, and in the same way, something that you can definitely tell, you wouldn’t think would be this great. The combination of refreshing beer with delightful sushi made this class more of an, honestly, enriching social event. It almost feels like some thing completely different, than just the standard, everyday, class.
Taste Test: Savoring Your Own Creations
What could be the better way. To complete a sushi class by actually eating the sushi, right? Very much there were a few interesting creations (and very few monstrosities), so that you have a meal that you cooked completely. And yes the results were, let’s say interesting. Sampling your creations. In that case is more satisfying because you did the creation yourself. The sense of accomplishment made them. Basically taste even better.
You actually get to enjoy your sushi alongside, in a way, your classmates. So that gives you an, really, somewhat relaxed atmosphere. What a great way to end the session, exchanging notes on beer pairings. With your sushi, which you prepared!
Is it Worth the Investment?
Thinking back, in some respects, I can say this sushi class is actually worth it for people. I mean anyone looking to something, just a little different, to learn something new, or to taste very very good sushi along with the locally made, crafted beer. I’d suggest this class because it combines some skills and learning in an awesome environment.
The combination of hands-on training, instruction by qualified teachers and then getting local drinks creates just some really fantastic synergy that will pay you back for, arguably, a very very long time.
