Port Douglas Rainforest & Kuranda Tour Review: Small Group is Best!
Alright, so you’re probably thinking about going to Port Douglas, that tropical paradise up in Queensland, right? If that’s the case, then you’re likely also dreaming about getting deep into the rainforest and checking out Kuranda, the famed village in the clouds. But, here’s something, there are like, tons of tour options, so it can be kinda tough picking the one that will make your trip seriously amazing. Well, check it out, I did this “From Port Douglas Small Group Rainforest and Kuranda Tour” thing, and wow, it was something! Seriously, it made a massive difference being in a small group. Allow me to lay down what I got up to, and hopefully, it helps you plan your adventure.
Why Small Group Really Does Make a Difference
Basically, before booking anything, I wondered, just like many others do, “is a small group really all that much better?” Okay, get this: Yes! Here’s what’s up. The thing that’s super great with going with a small group, perhaps up to 12 folks, say, instead of a bus packed with heaps of people, you actually, you know, get to connect a bit more. What I mean is, that the guide isn’t just shouting into a microphone the whole time. We got to chat, ask bunches of questions, and it felt really personal. It felt way less like being shuffled around like cattle, and much more like exploring with some friends, which is super, in a way. Being able to actually hear what the guide was saying as we trundled along paths rather less beaten helped me absorb heaps more facts as we plodded about.
Plus, here’s the cool thing. Smaller groups are way more nimble. So, the thing is, the guides can take you to those neat hidden spots that the big tour buses can’t even reach because they’re so massive. I remember going to this super awesome spot overlooking the rainforest where it really felt like we were the only people on Earth, for example. Talk about breathtaking!
A Closer Look at the Tour Itself
Okay, so let’s zoom right into all the juicy details, right? So, first things first, early pickup from your accommodation. Not even kidding, being picked up right from where I was staying, like, it was super convenient. No stressing about meeting points or figuring out public transport first thing in the morning. Now, listen up, part of what made the whole tour seriously awesome, was how it smoothly ran. Like, all the moving parts clicked together and it created a seriously fun experience.
The first part of the day, as you would expect, was all about that legendary Kuranda Scenic Railway. Picture this: You’re chugging along in a railway carriage, creeping up through thick rainforest. The views are unreal; I mean, the train winds past waterfalls and gorges that, honestly, are picture-postcard material. So the thing about the railway, right, it just isn’t just a way to get somewhere, it is something to soak up and appreciate. It’s like traveling back in time! Then, arriving in Kuranda is like stepping into an almost whimsical village atmosphere that buzzes with activity.
Exploring Kuranda Village: Way More Than Just Souvenirs
Listen, Kuranda Village tends to get a bum rap, right? And it does get pigeon-holed as just a tourist trap, where all you can get your hands on are overpriced knick-knacks. That being said, come with an open attitude and you will quickly appreciate the authentic vibe the area has on offer. And what you have got, is that, the markets there have some really unique crafts and pieces of art. I snagged this gorgeous hand-painted didgeridoo, very genuine piece. Of course, the Aboriginal Cultural Centre is a good one to have a gander at. Basically, there, you will pick up the indigenous history of the area, and have a go at boomerang throwing.
Check it out, this Butterfly Sanctuary is an absolute treat! Imagine thousands of fluttery friends just sort of wafting all around you – so stunning. For those like myself that go with smallies in tow, or you yourself are fascinated by pretty, brightly coloured flutterbys then the place has a great value offering.
The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway: Seeing the Forest From a New Angle
Now, so you know, once you’ve maxed-out Kuranda, it’s not like you just traipse back the same way you came, there is a fun part right. It’s time to jump onto the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Basically, prepare for views, but they are amazing! That thing I really dug about the Skyrail is just how tranquil it feels gliding along above the treetops. It gives a proper different perspective. What I really mean is, as opposed to being in the thick of the jungle you can actually get an aerial view of its magnificence!
There are multiple spots dotted about to hop off, so, allowing a brief hike, and getting close-up with the local flora. I have never seen leaves so big. In truth, some look almost primeval. The jungle’s abundance really has to be seen to be believed.
Lunch and Other Foodie Adventures
Naturally, with all that sightseeing and all the exploring, you’re bound to get seriously hungry, and you need to eat something. Now, you can either bring lunch or go for one of those cafes in Kuranda Village. Okay so, if you’re just really into experiencing food, make a point of checking out some local goodies.
Seriously, from what I hear, the “cassava chips”, seem to be a crowd-pleaser and go great with some relish, or dip, of your liking. Also, what with the heat and all that, nothing quite quenches the old first quite like an exotic juice or cold beverage. And it will inject energy after traipsing around. The tour folk were very forthcoming with the lowdown on eating locations to sample regional flavours, which was awesome.
The Guide Can Be Almost as Important as the Experience
Truth is, an experienced guide is critical to make or break a tour, specifically any trip that focuses primarily on rainforest trips, right? Luckily for us, our tour guide had encyclopedic awareness of all things pertaining to the rainforest: from knowing every individual tree’s genus to naming all the indigenous species fluttering overhead.
He took time pointing stuff out as we all rolled around together. Such as plants which contain medicinal properties, what native creatures to lookout for. Plus what he shared relating to the locale was equally engrossing too! Basically, having someone to give context gives you a wider feel for the wider story of both Queensland together with Kuranda itself, which in turn adds so much value, actually.
Added Extras That Make all the Difference
There really are a couple of surprise things you discover along the trip which, added up, just really increase enjoyment tenfold. First things first, what I mean by that, would be that there is something almost magical being driven round those winding roads. As well as this, some tours actually pass by kangaroos relaxing beneath the mid-day heat – a must capture photo op, should that be the case. Any additional things added onto such a wonderful excursion would seriously cement the reason why holidays give the memories which stay around forever.
Some Pointers and Things to keep in Mind
So, prior to hitting this wondrous jaunt to the rainforest, so to speak, then there are some extremely key considerations. Primarily being is: Firstly slap-on that suntan cream and always ensure its a high factor. Even trundling around amidst dense trees, sun reflections can really harm. Similarly a bottle of water should be at the top of your priority list; its important to stay hydrated.
Secondly: wear footwear you do not cherish. Getting them covered in all manner of rainforest substances. Pack a mac/poncho too. Finally do have the insect repellent. Basically you really dont need mossies chomping at the flesh all the time you are out there, so just buy something cheap.
Ultimately plan, arrive set. Follow simple tips. Your experiences would only improve.
