Okay, so, have you ever had that feeling where you wanted to just, like, soak up a city’s culture while treating your taste buds to something really special? You might have heard of Parma for, um, its yummy ham and parmesan cheese, and that’s all part of the reason to visit, but let me tell you, there is seriously a whole lot more going on in this town. That is why I went along on the ‘Parma Discover History and Food’ tour. In a way, it combined my two great loves, that being both learning and snacking!

Why Parma Should Be On Your Radar

Maybe you’re wondering, like, “Why Parma?” And the truth is, before doing some searching for my trip, it hadn’t really crossed my mind either! But you know, this Italian city, which is, so it’s almost, in the Emilia-Romagna area, is actually pretty rich with history. In a way, we are talking ancient Roman roots, stunning medieval buildings, and of course, that legendary food scene. I thought, in that case, I’d find a place that could just, like, show me everything – not just point things out, but really give me all the background and stuff. Basically, that’s what made me want to join this tour, because it looked like the thing would mix exploring and, you know, those essential food stops in what looked like the right amounts.

What To Expect From The “Parma Discover History and Food” Tour

Parma History Tour

Alright, so, what’s this tour like, right? Basically, the ‘Parma Discover History and Food’ tour seems to promise this look at the important parts of Parma, all while keeping your stomach seriously happy. That said, the blurb pointed to trips to those famous spots like the Piazza Duomo, and the Baptistery, plus visits to what were sure to be great places to get some proper local snacks. I will say, the mix sounded brilliant for, just a little, experiencing the local vibes and understanding the local culture, but, um, with my own interest being a bit more slanted toward culture and seeing the attractions, I hoped the food wouldn’t overwhelm those attractions.

A Walk Through History: Key Landmarks

Piazza Duomo Parma

So, we got going with the historical side of things, alright? That’s probably a better way of saying things. Piazza Duomo was naturally, where things began, with it’s seriously stunning cathedral. That meant that the architecture, basically, with those stories it seemed to whisper from, like, centuries ago, just got you from the start. Then again, the tour took in the Baptistery, alright? Which I would call an seriously amazing octagonal building built with pink Verona marble – which, I will say, is seriously impressive. I mean, you might think it’s just, kind of, old buildings, but seriously hearing about how these places were important to Parma really opened my eyes to how things, um, just developed here through the years. In some respects, it felt like walking, like your walking through this alive story.

Food, Glorious Food: Local Delights

Parmesan Cheese

But then came the main event; yummy eats, is that right? Look, Parma is rightly popular for two, maybe, you know, three particular things, that being Parmesan cheese and Parma ham – alright, also maybe pasta, you could add. So obviously, a visit was due, right? First, there was Parmesan, or Parmigiano Reggiano. We were able to go somewhere that showed the hard work that went in to make this great product, that means watching those cheese masters going about their old-school skills. Basically, seeing those processes really makes you appreciate the work involved – and more importantly, how seriously nice it tastes! After the Parmesan, there was the visit to get Parma ham (Prosciutto di Parma, to give it its real name.) That visit helped us understand what makes it unique, basically how everything is carefully selected and prepared. Taste? Really amazing! Then of course there’s the other foods, I think that, anyway, if those two don’t win you over, you might be won over!

The Tour Guide: A Key Ingredient

tour guide

Alright, let me just say that a tour is seriously only as great as the individual doing it, and this one hit it out of the park. And that’s a great start, alright? She really showed the vibe of Parma, telling those facts and giving recommendations. You could really see her enthusiasm, basically how things fit into the community, from every historical attraction to the local markets and stores. I would probably say that what made it, well special, was, you see, her way of just mixing those facts with some stories that got you emotionally engaged. So, she made even those people that don’t like stories get emotionally engaged – basically even me.

Highlights and Little Downsides

Just some thoughts: The pacing of the tour seemed fine for me, that means it didn’t seem like too much or too little. What’s great? Those food and historical balances worked really well! Learning how Parma ham and Parmesan get created made the tour special. Then the tour guide had plenty of knowledge – she wasn’t just there to fill some air. Now, that being said, here’s what, maybe, wasn’t quite as amazing: I kind of would have wanted that group to stay a bit smaller, maybe; but that is me really grasping at some straws for something negative. I can say for certain that the good stuff made all the not as good parts so small, so maybe they barely counted. Well that is me anyway!

Is This Tour Worth The Cost?

value for money

I guess the biggie question is; should you do this, yeah? Alright, if it’s like, getting those vibes about that place, finding those great spots, and chowing on something gorgeous while doing so is right up your alley, just like it is for me, then it’s probably money really well spent. Especially with a seriously awesome tour guide and getting entry into attractions and all the tastings, it really seems like it is really a complete deal. Yeah, I can easily advise going ahead.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Tour

travel tips

A few things from the trip that would definitely serve to get the most from it? Comfortable footwear really does make exploring more enjoyable. You see, there’s actually plenty of walking in those historical parts, but mostly it involves those older pavements, which are kind of unkind to your feet. Make some spaces free in the belly: you’ll definitely wish you did, considering that the snacks alone make it value for money. Enquiries. It is just that a local guide is the top way to know places which tourists won’t go to otherwise. If you are anything like me, then I’d say “Ask lots”.

More Unmissable Parma Experiences

There are actually plenty of ways that, you know, would let you soak in what Parma gives you. You see, a spot like the National Gallery really is great for any people keen on artistic impressions of Emilia-Romagna. The Teatro Regio also seems great for doing cultural evenings. Also, apparently there’s lots of stuff you can walk through, just to absorb places around. If you fancy finding a great, quick break somewhere, I’d advise the Parco Ducale (a grand, great bit of space to spend downtime. What else is possible?
