Oxford Haunted Tour Review: Uncomfortable Oxford’s Spooky Walk
If you are looking for an unusual way to experience Oxford, and are keen to explore the history behind this rather academic city, and too, if perhaps you’re hoping to discover some stories you might otherwise miss, a spooky walk seems like it could be a super fun activity. Uncomfortable Oxford offers such tours, that seem to blend the city’s well-known history with its maybe not-so-well-known, and potentially spookier, side. What can you basically expect, you might ask, from this specific kind of walking tour and should you actually sign up? Well, this is a look at my time on their Haunted Oxford Tour, so you can maybe get an idea if it sounds like something you’d probably enjoy.
What is ‘Uncomfortable Oxford’ Anyway?
Before really going into the ghost walk stuff, let’s just discuss “Uncomfortable Oxford.” This isn’t your regular kind of tour company, just so you know. It is actually run by university students and graduates and it aims to tackle some of the tougher, maybe darker, bits of Oxford’s history, that too, often get overlooked by your typical, and so very popular, tourist traps. What they usually do is that they highlight stuff like colonialism, class divides, and the stories of people who may well have been excluded from Oxford’s shiny history books. This rather particular approach gives you a fuller, way more reflective view of the city. Now, back to the spooky bits!
Booking the Tour: A Slight Hiccup?
Signing up for the Haunted Oxford Tour seemed very easy through their website, apparently, so that was a very promising start. However, I apparently messed up the date (oops!), but the customer service was actually very helpful. Getting hold of them, and then just changing the tour date, was pretty quick and very painless, which is really saying something. So very often you get lost in chatbot replies! It is certainly something I appreciated very much. I just sent them an email, and pretty soon it was sorted. This is possibly good to bear in mind just in case something potentially goes wrong with your booking too.
Meeting Up and First Impressions: A Rather Dim Start?
The tour usually kicks off near one of the colleges – I won’t basically spoil the surprise one. The guide was apparently really easy to identify, holding up their company sign. There were maybe around fifteen people or so in our group, so it was not overly packed, which, is that, always feels more personal. At first I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, to be honest, because ghost tours can possibly be rather hit or miss, or just really gimmicky. It quickly becomes clear though that, this particular tour, that it was intending to bring more than cheap jump scares. So this was rather comforting to know!
Stories and Spooky Tales: Chilling, so Very Thoughtful
So, that tour guide. They had what you might call a huge stack of spooky stories, alright, and historical facts. Instead of your basic “ooooh, a ghost!”, they just explained how Oxford’s history is sort of steeped in events that kind of have that capacity to leave, what, you might refer to as, lingering echoes. We swung by a good few places that have had reports of ghostly goings-on. Plus, for each location, we basically heard very dark tales or stories tied to some pretty chilling real life incidents. I just found out about a scholar whose tragic story apparently involved secret experiments. This, yet also how about a student’s unfortunate fate? You would think, and I suppose I did, that University life in such a highly privileged place was really about a few hard tests!
The thing I just liked most, probably, was how the guide tended to, well, connect the ghost stories to things that are true. The dark side, if you please. They talked openly regarding the unpleasant things that occurred back then. What may happen because of that, it gives, at least for me, extra depth. Rather than simply stating, just like “This location is apparently haunted”, they sort of get in-depth about how terrible past occurrences have perhaps shaped its spooky reputation.
The Guide’s Approach: Serious with an Appropriate Amount of Funny
One just very noteworthy aspect of the tour would need to be our guide’s actual storytelling approach. It wasn’t melodramatic or too silly, that being the thing I thought was very, really effective. They spoke seriously. Too, though, you know, now and again, dropped in a light joke here and there to perhaps relieve tension (or perhaps just to acknowledge just how seriously seriously some folk take all of this!). All I am aware of, as a matter of fact, is that it did give a wonderful equilibrium to having dark and grim accounts explained.
It’s so quite clear that that person actually understood his subject very deeply, because there’s something about his own general Oxford story itself that just sort of came shining by. It is basically like they weren’t only reading away out of a pre made guide. Oh no! These people made these topics live just simply from what they basically said, but mainly through passion.
The Route and Pace: A Comfortable Stroll… Mostly?
It really doesn’t go through any overly hard-to-walk spots. Everything remains fairly well-lit, even though, clearly, since these are scary, chilling stories, you do go out, well, you move about, during darker hours too. As you stroll around, you should hear very dark yet very amazing histories. Do have appropriate clothing and shoes put on if you mean to wander around in Oxford after darkness has basically fallen over us, or something, so you basically shouldn’t encounter problems walking all that place. Remember if your foot starts itching because of poor-fitting boots at nighttime it tends to just be bad!
More Than Just Ghosts: Social Commentary So Very Cleverly Woven in
The thing that’s neat, in particular, regarding Uncomfortable Oxford. I suppose I should explain. It comes about by going deeper than such things like generic ghostly tales. Oh yes, these folks actually mix dark history in to demonstrate cultural issues related to Oxford. As only one small thing, that specific tour basically pointed outward that multiple historic events basically mirror actual day to day conflicts. It can actually leave a person chewing their brain quite strongly even after these guides cease speaking.
Photo Opportunities: Setting The Scene
Basically pack any device which is able to work nicely within the dark conditions if maybe shooting nice photo’s becomes the thing you are up for the most. Because the majority of your stops will involve sites which were extremely beautiful throughout the day but during night become almost scary. Basically get some remarkable glimpses when snapping images during moments as something else of course, could probably give some eerie vibe within them!
Overall Value: Definitely Loads Of Good!
You should certainly grab that time while experiencing a creepy type story guided perambulation throughout Oxford per Uncomfortable Oxford assuming people appreciate things that possess maybe not only chills but also knowledge and consideration thrown just all through in a manner you actually should enjoy really. It mixes truly great, amazing details with real thought behind doing cultural interpretation, so they’re likely definitely far higher value instead what would appear generic “ghost trip”.
Would I Recommend It? It Sort of Depends, To Be Honest
Okay. If these experiences end up actually being good, because you happen really being one amongst history fans plus perhaps enjoy experiencing spooks even though always thinking of critical context then you should. Nevertheless, know fully this. That specific stroll, basically this perambulation around spooky spots, appears considerably different opposed the various rather generic kind-a ghost walks mostly given somewhere. Oxford can even feel remarkably amazing!
