Oaxaca Tour Review: Zapotec Legacy in a Day

Planning a trip to Oaxaca and want to soak up some ancient history? Alright, so the tour begins bright and early, which, let’s be real, is always the trickiest part on vacation. Yet once you’re settled in the van, very ready to see some ancient stones, the excitement kicks in. It is that the first stop is Lambityeco, a smaller site known, basically, for its really awesome stucco masks. That, is that you get to see these faces peeking out at you from the walls. I mean it’s just a bit mind-blowing to think about how long they’ve been there.

Alright, that’s Lambityeco! A relatively compact site, and yet it really packs a visual punch with those fantastically maintained stucco masks. Anyway, what you have got are depictions of Cocijo, the Zapotec rain god, along with other important figures. Those sculptures really give you such a feeling for the artistry of these ancient people. It’s a quick stop, still you get some surprisingly cool photos and a real appreciation for the details. Usually, tours like these can gloss over such smaller sites, however, the guide, anyway, does a pretty top job of really bringing Lambityeco to life.

Yagul: A City on a Hill

Next up is Yagul, and honestly, this was maybe my favourite. So, too it’s almost that Yagul is set on a hilltop, so already the views are gorgeous. Very, that you can look out over the valley as you amble among the ruins. Typically, the site is just larger than Lambityeco, with even more to see.

Typically, the site features a ball court, palaces, and even tombs. Actually, wandering through, anyway, gave me a real sense of what city life might’ve actually been like back then. Obviously, the ball court is pretty neat to see. Anyway, I was imagining those old games being played out. Your, like your guide usually points out the details you might usually overlook, adding a great deal to the visit. That the climb to the highest point might leave you slightly winded, still, the view, usually, is absolutely worthwhile.

Dainzu: The Hill of the Cactus

Dainzu is the final stop on the tour, anyway, and is different in a way. That, anyway, its carvings of ballplayers and priests make it pretty unusual. Right, so these aren’t the usual, like, regal figures you expect; some are quite brutal, very showing sacrifices. Literally, it can be quite fascinating. It is that because it provides a peek into some, arguably, grittier parts of their culture.

That you can find that the site, anyway, isn’t that well-preserved. Yet honestly, this usually adds to the mysterious feel. It is that you’re literally walking in the footsteps of people from centuries ago. Still, the remoteness of Dainzu really gives you that sense of being a proper, real explorer. Often, you might even have the entire place virtually to yourself! It is that these little moments actually made the experience really quite special.

What to Expect from the Tour Itself

So, the tour I took was guided, usually, in both English and Spanish. It is that you might wanna double-check that when you’re booking!
