Oahu’s Pearl Harbor & Honolulu Tour: An Honest Review
Planning a trip to Oahu? A visit to Pearl Harbor is often high on the list, and understandably so. It’s a profoundly moving experience that connects you with a very significant moment. The “Oahu Pearl Harbor and Historic Honolulu Half Day” tour, specifically, offers a convenient way to cover significant ground in a limited timeframe. This isn’t just any ordinary vacation thing to do; it’s more of a moment where you can feel and see all the important things that happened. We took this very tour ourselves, and we’re here to share our thoughts, in all their honesty, so, you can figure out if it’s a match for what you’re after.
What the Tour Promises
This half-day experience, basically, attempts to blend a solemn visit to Pearl Harbor with a brief overview of Honolulu’s historic spots. Usually, the highlights include the USS Arizona Memorial (with boat tour, schedule permitting), a drive through historic Honolulu (think Iolani Palace and the King Kamehameha statue), plus, often, a visit to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl Cemetery). It’s, kind of, supposed to give you a well-rounded glimpse into both the somber history and island feel, at least as much as is possible in such a small space of time. It’s just a short burst, though it attempts to cram as much important context into one space, you know?
Our Experience at Pearl Harbor
The Pearl Harbor portion of the tour definitely makes an impression. It starts with a documentary that, frankly, sets the scene in an emotional way. You get to hear the stories, a bit, of what went on that morning in 1941, putting faces and voices to this very historic event. From there, it was on to the boat that ferries visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial. Standing above the sunken battleship, you realize, very powerfully, that you’re looking at a place where so many lost everything. You could, actually, see oil still leaking from the ship after all these years, almost a visceral reminder. The whole experience just tends to make you think about a lot of things.
Bear in mind, actually, that access to the USS Arizona Memorial isn’t always certain. It’s quite, nearly, first-come, first-served, and sometimes weather or maintenance issues can affect the boat tours. The tour operators will usually have some kind of alternative plan, that is if the boat trip is canceled, perhaps a visit to one of the museums on-site. That’s something to keep in mind, particularly when planning, you know?
A Whirlwind Tour of Honolulu
After Pearl Harbor, that tour swung around to Historic Honolulu. The drive through the city provides snippets of what used to happen at places like Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii’s last monarchs. It’s very powerful seeing this building, and picturing what took place so long ago. Then, there’s the King Kamehameha statue, draped in leis, that makes, actually, for a great photo opportunity. Keep in mind, it’s usually a drive-by sort of thing. You might get to hop out quickly for a photograph, or it might just be viewed from the comfort of the bus, relying on your very expert photo-taking skills to catch the images of the city, just in case. Honolulu’s like any other city that there is in this respect – it needs time to truly soak in and explore what has gone on.
Punchbowl Cemetery: A Place of Remembrance
A stop at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, which is often referred to as Punchbowl Cemetery, is something. Located in an old volcanic crater, it’s the resting spot for many veterans. The perfectly manicured lawns and rows of headstones show an amazing view for the sacrifice and dedication that these men and women put forth. The vastness of the site is a visual to just give one example of how many people have been affected by war, and it can be a time for, perhaps, a little reflection.
Things We Liked (and Didn’t Like So Much)
What Impressed Us:
- Efficiency: If you are pressed for time, yet, want to see these significant landmarks, this tour helps get the job done.
- The Pearl Harbor Experience: Standing at the USS Arizona Memorial, basically, leaves you with something, to say the least.
- Guidance: Tour guides will know things! History! Giving some of these extra nuggets gives all sorts of things a new point.
Areas That Could Be Improved:
- Time Constraints: Everything, naturally, felt a little rushed. It barely scratches the surface of each place.
- Honolulu Drive-By: Seeing Honolulu from the bus just barely gives the feel that something has happened here; more chances for exploration would do better.
- USS Arizona Access: So, relying on getting on the boat to the USS Arizona Memorial is tough; back-up plans don’t pack that same power.
