Nha Trang to Tanyoli Sand Dunes Day Trip: Review & Guide

Nha Trang to Tanyoli Sand Dunes Day Trip: Review & Guide

Okay, so you’re in Nha Trang and, actually, you’re after something a little different, yeah? That’s cool! Instead of just hitting the beaches (which, fair enough, are very, very inviting), maybe you’re thinking about shaking things up a bit, in that case, how does trading those turquoise waters for, actually, some sweeping sand dunes sound? The Tanyoli Sand Dunes near Phan Rang could just be the detour you didn’t even know you needed! What follows is, essentially, what I think about this day trip – the good bits, the not-so-glam bits, and why it might just be what spices up your Vietnam adventure.

Why Choose Tanyoli Over Mui Ne?

Mui Ne vs Tanyoli Sand Dunes

Alright, so, chances are you’ve probably heard of Mui Ne’s famous sand dunes, is that right? Fair enough! It’s a bit of a classic. However, let’s just say Mui Ne’s gotten, like, super popular, is that OK? I mean, what that equals is bigger crowds and sometimes that slightly packaged, tour bus kind of vibe, is that what you want? Tanyoli, yet, now, that’s kind of like Mui Ne’s quieter, a bit more authentic sibling. Fewer tourists typically, in that case, might lead to a more chilled-out, arguably, a bit more real experience, very cool yeah?

What is particularly nice, actually, is that Tanyoli kinda feels untouched in some respects. Think wide open spaces, so very minimal development, in other words a really good chance to get that awesome desert landscape all to yourself for at least a little bit. Also, very handy if, actually, you’re trying to snag some super Insta-worthy photos without, basically, about a million other people in the frame. So if, clearly, escaping the crowds is what you’re aiming for, in that case Tanyoli could be your absolute jam!

Getting There: Nha Trang to Phan Rang

Nha Trang to Phan Rang transport

Okay, so, getting from Nha Trang to Phan Rang – where Tanyoli lives – actually, it’s not too tricky, alright? It is mostly quite straightforward. So, basically, you’ve got a few options: bus, train, or that trusty private car. Buses are usually pretty easy on the wallet, yet, you know, could take a little bit longer, cool? The train offers up some very lovely coastal views, actually, could be a nice scenic start to your sand dune frolic. Private cars mean you can do your own thing and actually set your own schedule, however, so usually that comes at a slightly higher price, fair?

In my instance, you see, I actually opted for a private car ’cause I, personally, was very short on time and really fancied the extra comfort. Plus, so the driver also knew the area quite well, in short he basically dropped me off right at Tanyoli. The drive itself, so it’s around two to three hours, right?, with views that kinda make you think, “Yep, so this is why I travel!” Is this OK?

Tanyoli: More Than Just Sand Dunes

Tanyoli Sand Dunes activities

Right then, so, Tanyoli isn’t all about just those sandy mountains, no, very interesting! Yes! Okay. Actually, what adds to the whole experience is how they’ve kinda mixed in a bit of adventure tourism too it’s almost. I mean, sandboarding is a total must-do! Is it really? Rent a board there and fly down those dunes – trust me, very funny even if you just spend the whole time eating sand. The dunes nearby, alright?, those have some serious slopes, so expect some very good thrills.

Yet! They actually have quad biking too! So in that case, you can tear it up across the sands for a bit more of an adrenaline boost, fair enough, alright? And what is particularly cool is that, too it’s almost, they have these tented campsites if, basically, you wanna make a proper night of it and kinda sleep under the stars. The vibe’s actually a mix of, like, adventure park and campsite, creating something that’s very unique.

What to Expect: My Personal Experience

Personal experience at Tanyoli

So I gotta say, when I arrived, basically, the first thing that grabbed me was the sheer scale of the place actually. Those dunes are seriously something else! Is that OK? So very vast, almost, alright, seemingly like you’ve basically been plonked into a mini Sahara, which is cool! I decided, actually, to try sandboarding, ’cause, you know, gotta give it a go, didn’t I! Aaaand I spent a good portion of the time, right, just picking sand out from every possible place you could, can you relate? Very much worth the laughs, to be perfectly honest.

I took a bit of a wander further in to see if there were camels for a ride. Sad to say they aren’t! It would of been an excellent touch to really create that proper Saharan atmosphere!

What you want, though, actually, are sensible shoes. Actually, that scorching sand and flip-flops are really not a great mix! And basically, sun protection, and lots of it. Factor 50 is your friend basically. So that sun out there is very real. I found that people in that little on site cafe are rather delightful.

And the people? That small community of locals who usually run things out there actually were great! Very welcoming, very helpful, and super chilled. They really added, literally, to the positive feel of that entire place.

Tips for Planning Your Trip

planning trip to Tanyoli

Right then, some things I personally found, actually, very helpful to know beforehand? Firstly, really go super early or go kinda late. Is that OK? Those midday sun rays are pretty fierce on the dunes, honestly. Aiming for early morning or after 3pm means, obviously, you’re dodging those major heat hours, however, you’re grabbing the softer light, in fact the softer light is very good for photos. Nice. Also! Haggling’s generally part of the game for board rentals or quad bike hire. Don’t be scared actually, to try and, literally, knock a few VND off the price!

And I’d really take plenty of water with you, seriously. Being out in those dunes, actually, that heat really saps your fluids. Also! Small snacks are another genius move! Yeah? Unless, basically, you really fancy only eating sandy everything all day!

Also very wise, as I keep mentioning!, lots of sunscreen! Basically you’re in a desert. Protect yourself appropriately and take it from one that didn’t at first. Ouch!

Oh and, as an extra, if you love sunsets and sunrises – this is actually that place! That’s right. I would suggest going in the afternoon, getting there for 3, stay for sunset. The colours as the sun drops are almost from another world.

Is Tanyoli Worth the Trip?

Is it a decent day? Yeah. Absolutely, for the memories of sun stroked cheeks and aching from belly laughing! But, there’s also that little desert feel from what is quite an industrial place, not that dissimilar to most vacation parks. Don’t get too excited and this trip won’t disappoint you.

Look: If basically you’re itching for an excursion from Nha Trang and kinda fancy a little break from all those usual beachy vibes, is that OK? You need to get away?! Then basically, yeah, I’d actually give Tanyoli a solid thumbs-up! Basically, it’s an opportunity basically to do something super different, you can nab those amazing photographs, and actually you support a local community trying hard with tourism. It isn’t super slick but, frankly, I reckon that adds a lot to its charm.

Things to know about the location

Location information of Tanyoli Sand Dunes

So Phan Rang is a solid fishing area and this is very much where the catch goes. Seafood around this spot will be awesome because everything here is almost direct off the boat. So that might just inspire you, basically, to grab lunch there. They even do tours.

Is it on Google Maps? Oh yeah. It’s also got its own resort which might, arguably, be your preference, if really you love activities!

Don’t forget! Those sunsets are the real big draw! And this location has one over many, so make the most of that! Even just for that little moment of total solitude! Is that what you would go for?

Very quick list of pros and cons for ease:

  1. Go very late/go very early!
  2. There’s accommodation should that actually take your interest.
  3. Not very hard to get to in any respect, however, bear that cost in mind!
  4. Very very very very exposed; sunscreen up!
  5. Great sun rises/sets! Make use of these if that has an impact!
  6. Make like a true tourist! Wheel and deal a bit.

Alright, so basically there you have it! Hopefully I’ve actually given you a little bit of a better insight into what a Tanyoli Sand Dunes day trip really is like. Get stuck in to Vietnam! You won’t regret it, surely! You will?

If really you’re trying to decide on getting a guide for going on, really, any trip in Vietnam I will tell you one major point to know. I found a guide actually provides much better insights for prices; they typically live around those locations all their lives. In this spot for this spot. Probably it’s fine though really. Depends how much you are trying to get out of this experience!

Basically my last thought is – maybe if you skip Mui Ne, give this one a try! So what is to lose eh?
