Nagarkot & Dhulikhel Day Trip: A Kathmandu Escape Review
Ever felt that pull, that need to get away from the intensity of Kathmandu, just for a bit? I totally get that! So, actually, taking a day trip to Nagarkot and Dhulikhel can be a really superb shout. It’s like stepping into a completely different kind of world, one where you can almost reach out and touch those big, majestic mountains. I’m going to walk you through, kind of like, what you can expect, if it is worth your while, and how to get the most out of your little escape.
Why Nagarkot and Dhulikhel? Is that the million-dollar question, or what?
Nagarkot, my friend, is celebrated, and very fairly so, as *the* place for sunrise views of the Himalayas, but obviously only if the weather plays nice, fingers crossed. Dhulikhel, it offers more of a cultural and heritage-focused experience, together with really spectacular viewpoints that shouldn’t be overlooked. Visiting both, actually, on the same day means you’ll experience some pretty incredible landscapes alongside a taste of rural Nepali life; two peas in a pod! People very often say it’s the best of both aspects, for that matter.
What to Expect on the Drive There. Seriously.
The drive, to be completely frank with you, from Kathmandu can be quite the adventure, very much an icebreaker to your experience. Roads can be a little… well, let’s say “spirited,” but the scenery, so, the scenes of countryside, tiny towns, and terraced farms, actually make it a pretty cool ride. It is that kind of ride that gives you something back. Be prepared for a bit of a bouncy castle feel from time to time and you could be fine! Maybe that should be ‘should really’?
Nagarkot: Sunrise or Bust (hopefully sunrise AND bust…)
If you are off to Nagarkot, you are going to want to be up way before dawn; that’s like some next-level commitment! To see that vista over the Himalayas with the sun peeking over is, obviously weather permitting, one that’s properly hard to top. Even without an unobstructed mountain view, there’s usually some appeal with the clouds and the general feel of the landscape, very dramatic it can be, too. Very often you might feel you are standing on the top of the Earth. Bring a warm coat and a hot cup of tea, or, much better yet, purchase those there.
Dhulikhel: History, Culture, and more Himalayan Scenes – Nice one!
Dhulikhel has temples, old-fashioned Newari architecture, and viewpoints looking onto Himalayan ranges that, very usually, get a much better billing. You might, arguably, like to check out the Kali Temple or go for a slow stroll around the town so you’ll drink in the whole local vibe. It feels pretty real; more real than maybe Nagarkot does, possibly because of its location on an ancient trading route towards Tibet, apparently. So too, don’t overlook the interesting little shops!
Making the Most of Your Day – A Handy Guide
- Get An Early Start: The roads that you are using from Kathmandu get clogged; leaving early will make it so you actually bypass the heavier bits of traffic. So too, this really gives you a superior shot at viewing that sunrise in Nagarkot.
- Keep Tabs On The Weather: Mountain weather? Is that, notoriously, completely fickle? A clear day, or one forecast to be, obviously increases the chances of amazing views. But there again, it doesn’t always work out like that.
- Book Transportation: Actually arranging for a car plus driver (kinda like, for the whole day) really could be your finest option. It does offer the kind of flexibility that taxis, or that type of approach, can’t hope to supply. So too, your lodging can more than likely sort all this out.
- Take Drinking Water & Snacks: The journey time may vary, it might be a good idea to ensure you come prepared, even though both Nagarkot and Dhulikhel actually have options for sustenance, too.
- Layer Your Clothing: That’s layering. High altitudes may give you a chill; the days sometimes start very cool, especially early morning, then you might wish to peel off some bits of garments later on!
Food, glorious food! Eating Local. I mean, why wouldn’t you?
Take this opportunity, and it really would be wrong of you not to, to properly enjoy a proper Nepali meal. Plenty of restaurants up in Nagarkot and Dhulikhel serve up conventional Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (that’s a lentil soup with rice), momos (that’s delicious dumplings) plus thukpa (noodle soup goodness). Really don’t hold back from going local; so, generally it tastes magnificent and it aids the local economy too. A complete win-win.
Is that Nagarkot/Dhulikhel Trip Really Worth Your Time? That’s what everyone wants to know…
If you’re fairly OK with just a little bit of travel and you are pretty happy to pay something to escape the intensity of Kathmandu, you very probably would love a day trip like this, actually. It provides scenery you really might have a job finding anyplace else, also, an intro to Nepalese rural life which is something many seem to enjoy, plus it lets you see those iconic mountains. Just in case that hasn’t sold it, I will say that having an insight to Himalayan views (or simply being high above the clouds) is a memory you might carry forever; what a keepsake!
To put it another way: go on! Get up there, breathe that very refreshing mountain air, and have some memories made. Oh, and bring your camera, obviously!
