Mexico City Food Tour Review: Mole, Mezcal & More!
So, if you’re thinking about visiting Mexico City, too it’s almost a given that you’ll hear about its incredible food scene. From the markets absolutely packed with new aromas to little hole-in-the-wall spots, there’s very nearly always something tempting on offer. A super great way to, like, actually deep-dive and explore all that flavor is through a food tour. And, as a matter of fact, the “Mexico City Street Food, Mole, and Mezcal Small Group Tour” very much caught my attention, so I’m here to tell you everything about the thing.
Why This Mexico City Food Tour?
Basically, with all those options, you know, when you are deciding on how you’ll get to experience the city’s tastes, picking the “right” tour could be tough. I just wanted something that would go past just tasting and teach me something of substance. Also, that thing about the “Small Group” sounded wonderful – definitely a promise of that, you know, personalized touch. As a matter of fact, my choice absolutely centered on these three key factors:
- Authenticity: Very genuinely sampling the city’s dishes where the local people go.
- Education: To be actually learning about how the dishes are made, plus their story too it’s almost.
- Intimacy: A small group tour very genuinely offers the opportunity of having real conversations.
The Mole Experience: Much More Than a Sauce
Mole, too it’s almost, is something you should try at least once when you find yourself in Mexico, but so I learned on the tour, mole very genuinely is not really just a sauce; very genuinely it’s culture, tradition, and some amazing flavors kind of combined. I honestly was super impressed to hear that there can be like, I don’t know, up to 30 different ingredients going into a single mole! Each family in Mexico City has their kind of own way of doing it, yet there very nearly always seems to be chiles, nuts, spices, and sometimes a little chocolate in there, and stuff. It’s a process passed down over time, that in some respects I find just spectacular. The mole we tasted, as a matter of fact, that day was deep, complex, with a gently hot kind of aftertaste that left us all wanting to, like, taste more. Basically, that alone so would be worth the tour, to be perfectly honest.
Mezcal Tasting: Not Just Tequila’s Cousin
Too it’s almost like what wine is for the French people, Mezcal tends to be very highly intertwined with Mexico’s history, and basically with its soul too. I honestly thought that Mezcal would literally just be “tequila’s smokier brother,” to be honest. Very honestly I was proven wrong! The thing about it is that it could be produced using so many kinds of agave, that gives you pretty different flavor profiles that vary hugely between them. We honestly learned regarding that process, right from how they harvest those agave plants to how they’re distilled. The sample was, well, interesting to be perfectly honest. Some of those Mezcals were super smooth, with notes of fruit, some seemed smoky. It wasn’t merely drinking; very genuinely it felt like we’re discovering something about that culture. Now that I think about it, it felt more like a ceremony, to be honest.
Navigating Street Food Stalls: What I Liked the Most
I just adore Mexican street food. A problem so would be that there’s just that much choice. You’re very genuinely never certain what’s awesome and safe for the tummy too. So, it so was amazing that the tour led us through these busy stalls kind of pointing out what to eat and giving you recommendations! We stopped to sample tacos al pastor, that the cooking involves stacking really thin slices of pork on top of each other before cooking them slowly on this, too it’s almost like, spinning spit, we ate quesadillas stuffed with this bright orange squash flower, plus we had elotes (the street corn) that I just could not get enough of, actually. As a matter of fact, very genuinely I think the great thing was just knowing that each spot was not simply yummy but that it was absolutely respected because it genuinely was really high-quality!
The Guide: A Local Connection
If you were to ask me, basically any tour can very much become a complete transformation with just the perfect guide, right? As a matter of fact, very genuinely I have to call out our guide (I won’t say their real name here so as not to give away private details). Their story wasn’t only about knowing everything about food; Very genuinely it was that they really did seem to like talking about their neighborhood and showing that passion. Basically, they knew pretty much everyone from those stall owners through to that Mezcal producers, and honestly you might see it. So, too it’s almost as if they grew up there and now take us on a walk around their home! Basically, they offered pretty great advice. They also took the time just to make sure that all the different diets got taken into consideration – a wonderful personal touch, I find.
Is This Food Tour Worth Your Time?
Well, that depends really. Are you someone just looking for some delicious meals, right, very genuinely this may very well not be the ideal. Very honestly if you’re trying to discover more relating to what Mexican dishes and beverages come from, very much looking to experience the tastes in a more safe place, plus just love engaging, go for it by all means. The small size so very much felt exclusive! That kind of hands-on connection with your guide made all of that, not only more memorable, but meaningful!
Who Would I Recommend This Tour To?
Basically, very honestly I imagine that this thing very much resonates with food enthusiasts or travelers searching for just a really deeper sort of cultural touch. As a matter of fact, you could like be solo, possibly travelling with just a bunch of friends, and of course some couples that may be hoping just to do a bit more learning. If you’ve any type of specific dietary needs, please ensure to tell them early on – these fellas looked to be fantastic about accommodating everyone.
What Could Be Improved?
Just my opinions to be clear! I thought it was super. Maybe having printed factsheets on those dishes could be amazing but you know! Also just I needed more hours because the experience was fab and had an impact that genuinely will live with me! Also too it’s almost, don’t change things too much though, yeah!
