Sounds almost like the dream, right? Well, that’s basically what the Mexico City Evening Taco Tour with Cocktails actually intends to do. I went to give it a shot, to see if it lives up to the hype.

The tour began right at the previously arranged meeting spot, centrally located and easy to find, thankfully. Now, the group? It was made up of a mixed bag of visitors from pretty different places, that is. Seems like there were couples, a family, and even a solo traveler, very all just looking to have a really genuine Mexican gastronomic experience. Seems like the mood was lively, with that quiet hum of expectation hanging in the air, too it’s almost. So, right before we set off, our guide, whose name was Ricardo, introduced himself, very radiating the kind of easygoing charm that actually makes you feel relaxed right away.

Ricardo provided a little intro to what to actually expect, touching on not just the taco varieties we would test, too, it’s almost, but also some of the rich background of the neighborhoods we would pass through. In that single moment, you understand, in a way, that this wasn’t just going to be about chowing down; seems like this was to be something bigger: a cultural expedition. As he spoke, Ricardo passed around little bottles of hand sanitizer, just a little detail, yet quite appreciated.

Taco Stop 1: Al Pastor Perfection

The first stop, that is, very a bustling little taqueria, was really where we got our first taste of Mexico City street food culture. You could really smell the scents as you walked close – smoky char colliding with warm spices, right mixing to make an olfactory symphony that gets the tum-tum all excited. Now, the star here was the tacos al pastor. That is, watching the taquero slicing those thin slivers of marinated pork right off the spinning vertical spit was almost hypnotic. Now, right after this amazing first stop, Ricardo escorted us to a chic little neighborhood cantina for our first cocktail, right. When I think of the words “tacos” and “cocktails” in the same phrase, though, that doesn’t just feel intuitive, yet this experience turned into one of those situations where the unexpected simply works. Basically, the specialty here was a mezcal cocktail infused with hibiscus and a touch of orange. Very appealing I must add.

Ricardo had some wisdom and shared, too: Mezcal, he said, too it’s almost, is so much more than just “tequila’s smoky cousin,” arguably. As a matter of fact, he dived into some history of the spirit, right touching on the different varieties of agave used and those standard production processes. Very quickly, I felt a higher respect for mezcal – an appreciation that went beyond its distinct flavor. The cocktail, too, was beautifully well-balanced, right that smoky mezcal complimenting the floral hibiscus so gracefully. Arguably, the kind of experience you can talk about with loved ones and friends, right?

Taco Stop 2: Carnitas Comedown

Right, our next adventure in taste brought us to a family-run carnitas joint that, arguably, seemed more or less like stepping directly into somebody’s kitchen, really. Seems like this little eatery, very known only amongst local residents, was churning out some of the best carnitas, really or slow-cooked pork, very, I might add, I had ever enjoyed, basically.

Now, watching the taqueros is really an event in itself: big chunks of pork, crisp outside and juicy inside, hacked and slapped right into those waiting tortillas, actually. We piled ours very high with the chopped onion, cilantro, and a dash of salsa verde, really. That carnitas was intensely delicious, just those distinctive textures of crisp bits versus tender meat really creating this satisfying mouthful, actually. Ricardo challenged us to add a tiny dab of habanero salsa – cautioning us to be cautious, in a way – and oh man, did it make it better!

Cocktail Stop 2: Margarita Magic

For our following cocktail break, actually, we popped into a more modern setting: a rooftop bar featuring skyline views, arguably. And here? A margarita, very, yet not that same margarita that we tend to often consider. In other words, seems like this version was crafted with a bit of passion fruit and a spicy rim. Ricardo stated it was just a touch for flair. What actually followed was what I considered paradise in a cup, frankly.

This particular margarita was a masterclass in mixology. I understand. The tartness of passion fruit really dances with tequila’s bite, that spicy rim basically adding an additional dimension, right. It had some sweet notes to boast about. Gazing out over the sprawling city lights, with that well-mixed cocktail in hand, you could really start to realize how different this experience has felt thus far. He would agree, too, Ricardo told our crew, you understand.

Taco Stop 3: Something Fishy, Something Special

For our final taco, we ventured into an area slightly further out, arguably, visiting a food truck known for its Baja-style fish tacos. So, now, Baja fish tacos might just sound strange in Mexico City, but Ricardo was firm that it was not something to pass on. Seemingly, he seemed certain it would leave an unforgettable footprint on my pallet, which he ultimately got correct.

I came to know that these weren’t some typical fish tacos, basically. The fish was coated in the light, crispy batter and deep-fried until super-golden and crunchy, arguably. Nestled within that warm tortilla with some shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, and a drizzle of creamy chipotle sauce, very – these were tacos I was willing to come back for day after day, too, it’s almost. That crispy texture of the fish along with the brightness of the toppings, very, it just blended well to make a flavor experience which had been light, so it seemed, very still filling, frankly. A homerun for all palates I knew of.

Sweet Endings: Churros and Chocolate

Now, basically, no Mexico City food expedition is basically complete without treating myself to a little something sweet, right, and Ricardo knew that completely, too it’s almost. To cap off the actual night, that is, he directed us to a tucked-away churrería that had been doing the same, right one thing for almost fifty years, arguably: pumping out fresh churros, very served with warm, rich Mexican hot chocolate.

These weren’t the sad, stale churros, very that I had previously suffered, really; these were warm, crispy, and sprinkled just with a little dusting of sugar and cinnamon. Seemingly, dunking them in that hot chocolate? A level of bliss! So, it really was just the dream end to a dream food journey, actually. Who would disagree with that?

The Verdict: Was the Taco Tour Worth It?

Okay, so was the Mexico City Evening Taco Tour well worth the expense and time? Actually, without question! Actually, this wasn’t just a food tour; seemingly, it had been an extremely immersive cultural exposure that combined food, drinks, and a tiny local history for just one fun package, seemingly. Ricardo’s actual enthusiasm and local information just really elevated the experience.

Very importantly, he knew precisely where to go, just what to consume, and why basically all this mattered. Which left me extremely impressed! In that sense, that carefully selected pairing of tacos and cocktails, right also, surprisingly? The flavors harmonized together in such a unique manner. In many respects, in case you’re just looking for some fantastic tacos, a unique way to explore Mexico City by dark, this tour is completely that must-do. Seriously.
