Limassol Christmas

Christmas in Limassol is really a time when the town seems to change. It goes, almost, from its sunny, coastal vibes into something much more warm and kind of festive. You know, the air itself feels different – maybe because of the twinkling lights everywhere or just, kind of, because everybody seems to be in a good mood, or trying to be. I’ve seen quite a few Christmases here, and that means I’ve got to know all the cool places and spots to hit. I wanted to share that with you, so you can, maybe, skip the tourist traps and just get to what matters, you know, like proper holiday joy. I wanted to point you to those moments, where you’ll actually feel that Christmas spirit.

Getting Into the Christmas Feel: More Than Just Decorations

Limassol Christmas Decorations

See, it’s very easy to just walk around and look at Christmas decorations, right? But for that Christmas feel, you have to kind of actually do something, you know? Now, one thing I like to start with is really just checking out the main squares. Grigori Afxentiou Square, it tends to be the hub of stuff that’s happening. The municipality puts on events there, maybe they have carols, maybe some shows, you get the idea. Ermou Street, too, it goes from the court down to the sea, is kind of fun to stroll down. Sure, it’s mostly shopping, however at that period, shops do try, they decorate a lot and there is just some sort of lively mood around there. Very important: stop for some roasted chestnuts, almost from a street vendor. It isn’t Christmas otherwise.

What I do want to point out, though, is something that some folks actually miss. Loads of the churches, actually, they have Christmas services. No matter what your background may be, or if you are very religious or not, stepping into one of them could really give you some peace. Ayia Napa Cathedral, near the Molos, actually, is a pretty spectacular one. If you go there during a service, especially when it is all lit up, it does just make the holiday feel more solemn and it’s almost…nice, you know?

Beyond the Obvious: Discovering Local Christmas Events

Local Christmas Events Limassol

I wanted to mention something about getting beyond the main touristy areas – ’cause this is where you can find those little bits, that really makes a place special. I like checking online to find all of the community events, maybe that little theatre performance up in the hills or perhaps some small Christmas bazaar happening in one of the villages nearby. Facebook pages, the municipal website – are good for finding those. To me, something that can make those experiences better is, maybe taking the local bus. Yes, it can take longer, than driving, that, is also why it’s kind of good though. You tend to get to see a whole lot more of the area. It gives you the opportunity to soak up the views as you just slowly go up the hills. It also gives you some sort of understanding of how locals are living – which is really cool if you are on holiday.

A bit of what makes it worthwhile really are all of those unexpected little moments. Maybe it’s the kind of old woman on the bus, who just starts chatting to you and sharing some baked goodies, or maybe it is the coffee shop in a mountain village with some crazy view that nobody, you know, Instagrams, with the coffee smelling very fresh. The Christmas events beyond the obvious, really, almost have the potential to turn into something very amazing, kind of precisely because they aren’t super curated for the tourist.

Christmas Markets: Tips for Beating the Crowds

Limassol Christmas Market Crowds

Okay, let’s chat, almost, about Christmas markets. The good stuff? It is when you get all the lights, when it is cold-ish. However, loads of people can show up – which can also make it a bit stressful. See, my tip would be to not try and just go during peak hours, such as evenings or over the weekend. Actually, if you just visit during a weekday morning, that’s better – you’ll get to stroll and to see all of the things they are selling. And honestly? A good time can just be when you chat with all of the vendors, hear about how they make that honey or when they actually carved this wooden toy. It adds something personal, compared to going when they’re busy.

Also, I almost would say – don’t go to markets just right next to the sea. They tend to be crazy-overpriced. Instead, that new one that’s in the old port it seems a bit more geared at folks who reside here and the people, who happen to visit, really. You might, also, find much more variety, for things you could buy there – rather than those tourist souvenirs, which are exactly the same. Another great experience may be when you look at crafts by smaller vendors or something that makes it more of a local experience.

A Taste of Christmas: What to Eat and Drink at the Markets

Christmas Food Limassol

What’s interesting about the markets, really, is what you are able to eat. Loads of people already know about melomakarona (those cookies covered with honey). Diples can be very awesome as well, especially, if you actually buy them right when they’re fresh, still a bit soft. Something, perhaps, very tasty, but a bit less commonly known could very well be ‘Christopsomo’ – Christ’s Bread. Usually, it’s, almost, this large, sweet bread. They are decorated with a cross, along with sesame seeds. See, different bakeries add some touches with spices or citrus – I am serious – I make it into a challenge, every year, to locate which one I almost liked the most. Get a bit for your walk, and for a nice snack with your family or maybe with you friends when you return back to where you stay. It does feel nice to have.

Drinks-wise, well, you are bound to see a bit of commandaria. That sweet dessert is almost something really ancient – even Richard the Lionheart allegedly said that it was ‘the wine of kings’. Warming? Ask people for a zivania, with honey, you are almost very likely to see places serve some version of it, at Christmas fairs. It tends to have something that makes it a little bit less strong. (However it still packs quite the punch.) Again, do also check on the stalls, that smaller producers can organize – there will almost always be the opportunity to sample and so actually get to try out that specific holiday flavour that every family really loves.

Hidden Gems and Unexpected Delights

Limassol Hidden Christmas Gems

Let me tell you all about seeking little hidden away treasures because this is how to see all that some other visitors maybe just, never come across. You may have noticed people love the seaside promenade – however most miss bits in the older town. Wander to the back a little, and you’ll almost see really pretty decorated houses, away from some hectic areas that have Christmas stuff aimed mostly at the tourist crowd.

Something else I want to mention too is checking out the art places. Many of these locations put together specific winter or holiday themed showcases – almost from pottery up in the Troodos mountains or jewelry inspired almost from ancient patterns. Sometimes you even get mulled wine. I am serious, the blend of art, a local drink and kind of getting out there? Just adds the human, meaningful interaction that sometimes all of the holiday seasons can start lacking.

Making Memories: Creating Your Own Christmas Traditions in Limassol

Limassol Christmas Traditions

Christmas actually isn’t really only about buying presents, and visiting spots, but really about those feelings, almost when you are getting into the traditions. Now, perhaps one that could bring you and people close to each other and make you feel like a true local – why not volunteer for a Christmas day event and help feed the homeless. Really giving, almost makes people remember, why Christmas almost matters in the first place, as a giving act, rather, than one where only you want to receive. In addition to giving a bit, it also connects someone really with all parts of that local social ecosystem. Maybe that turns to one special day.

If helping really out in this way doesn’t quite sound like your thing? Then maybe consider a little tradition in terms of local things that you can consume. Grab some that unique seasonal treat on Christmas Eve to remember next time you come back – whatever fits right with those closest to someone. Every time, then, you eat that particular food, it is very, extremely, likely to cause something almost nice to happen inside of them!

Tips for a Smooth Christmas Adventure

Limassol Christmas Travel Tips

If one wants to explore, something worth keeping in mind really is that transportation takes just a little prep, at the last minute. Many visitors will only grab rental cars and sometimes the roads actually get congested and you also have very little parking options around all that hectic action. This really could mean that walking quite a ways feels very essential, though. Buses work! Also, why not just use local taxis when needed! I always see a small group who actually just get foldable scooters to take – which they also use later and seems so incredibly freeing.

Additionally, when it comes down to the shops during Christmas – especially ones geared almost right at residents – do double-check when all are shut during Christmas Eve/Christmas/Boxing day and that might, just, need a bit more organization, you know? To kind of, ensure you have those all significant Christmas supplies, the morning when Christmas begins or even when one might wish to bake snacks. Basically do that instead of thinking everything’s all accessible right when, well, shops all around a coastal area have changed all of their winter schedules a bit.

Budget-Friendly Festive Fun

Budget Limassol Christmas

See, you really can, experience a lot without a big spend. Looking at it this way, soaking in views that cost nearly nothing brings almost good times just with friends at certain of such Christmas locations. Or when maybe just wander all around looking all the light things! Otherwise you, maybe you go on trails – some kind of festive theme!

Something super useful is going down markets right prior to when closing! People will likely start decreasing costs massively near their things prior going back on their particular closing points and I often got the best things then basically costing hardly all! Try that when a gift just won’t quite be too necessary. Or one of their things will definitely prove itself beneficial yourself.

So that’s it! Have a very lovely, jolly-filled Christmas visit!
