Kurama & Kibune Hiking: A Review of This Ancient Paths Experience

Kurama and Kibune, you know, these are two tiny villages up in the mountains just north of Kyoto. And, wow, there’s a special hiking route, you see, that connects them. This isn’t just any walk, yet, it’s through some incredibly old paths steeped in, like, spiritual history and natural beauty. I’m going to let you in on what this hike is really, very like, is that I’ll share tips to make your own trip much smoother. If you’re pondering a trip to Kyoto, it could be that this, a bit, unique mountain walk will absolutely provide something truly special to your travel experience.

Reaching Kurama: Beginning the Ascent

Kurama Temple Entrance

So, getting to Kurama is, too it’s almost a fun little adventure all by itself! Basically, it involves hopping on a train from Kyoto, you see, more or less a scenic ride heading into the countryside. You’ll grab a train to Demachiyanagi Station first, then switch to the Eizan Railway Line. Apparently, this line is like an attraction of its own, very running through tunnels of trees that almost brush the train’s sides – super cool, really!

Alright, as you come close to Kurama Station, the air feels different; like, it’s fresher, cleaner, tends to be a hint of mountain breeze. The station itself is adorable. Actually, after stepping out, it’s that you can already feel the pull of something ancient and peaceful. A great, big tengu statue greets visitors, it’s that marking, maybe, the beginning of the spiritual experience which awaits.

Once you start going, the path immediately begins to incline, more or less leading up towards Kurama-dera Temple. Is that there are two ways up: you can take a cable car (which I recommend for those needing assistance or wanting to save a bit of time), or, maybe, you can trek up the path. Very naturally, I walked. Seriously, though, I wanted to fully soak in the vibe, which can only, sort of, happen with your feet connecting with that earth. The trail itself is really well maintained, with stone steps that kind of wind, basically, upwards through this really very dense forest.

Kurama-dera Temple: A Place of Peace

Kurama-dera Temple

Once you finally come up to Kurama-dera Temple, very there’s this wave of, like, calm, you know? Apparently, the temple buildings are nestled beautifully on the mountainside, looking out right over that valley. Usually, it’s breathtaking!

So, the history here is deep. Of course, Kurama-dera has been around for what could be centuries, and is that it started originally as a way to protect something; this is the Northern Gate of Kyoto. Over the ages, its spiritual purpose went through a lot of change. Today, usually, it mixes elements from different beliefs including Buddhism, Shintoism, and this other teaching called the Kurama-dera doctrine.

It could be said that there is a certain thing, though, you know? That you shouldn’t go to the main hall, because actually, that main hall, with its veranda is definitely where one is able to soak in that beauty all around, very getting almost panoramic views and feel this complete stillness of the mountains. Many travelers really are making an effort, too, it’s almost finding spots where, arguably, they’re looking for their spiritual vibes here.

Once past the main hall, naturally, that actual hiking trail really begins, sort of, continuing uphill into a nearby forest, and is that leading towards Kibune. Get ready; you may really be excited!

The Mountain Trail: Into Nature’s Embrace

Hiking trail Kurama Kibune

OK, alright, the hike between Kurama and Kibune, frankly, this one, usually, it is that special thing to write about. Just picture yourself walking through the, well, forest; light just filters, still, though those leaves, you understand? As a matter of fact, the trees tower above, really, the air’s always cool, really so, so, so, really there is this earthy smell. Alright, there really are roots all twisted everywhere all over, more or less. Very you will want to step very, a bit carefully.

It could be that this path can get rather uneven, or, likely it changes a good bit too. First is a rocky section with tons of those big tree roots that you see across everything and, really, it demands care. Next you, can walk easily and safely where those have stone set up, I mean those stones look that they are old by about 1000 or maybe thousands of years, that is how one should be feeling to have one such experience here. As a matter of fact you walk with a light care, very with the expectation, that you very, you understand those ancient steps are, that is, arguably, you, is that giving you a bit and unique kind of feeling, is that I’m trying to, like, explain, you know?

It tends to be steep, actually, you will get an upward slope; also, the way going on for it is more easy. Also, the path could be about 2.5 to 3 kilometers and really is capable of being covered approximately for a duration about, arguably, one up to two hours contingent right at one’s walking. First, when I have tried this, well I tried to stop by about 500 or one thousand meters every time. Clearly I took pictures all of them. Naturally, I used up my phone by 40 % or, really something for me too, but is that how memorable one of my hikes became here.

As I have passed that peak or you go through those downward points, it is where there is lots of bamboo trees for one. Basically these sights were actually spectacular; that experience gives those calmness feelings of your senses where they may all can make it really, I mean great, and then makes all what you see quite remarkable!

Kibune: The Village Above the Trees

Kibune Village Kyoto

Finally you can approach Kibune, actually it seems is where is really just there the area from a hike! Also, Kibune is sort of that adorable place near on the stream is where the mountains seem so towering above, well you see, actually, Kibune is really well known it has so much waterways! Is that for real I swear. Is that, at some places restaurants usually they construct platforms really upon a waterway, very granting visitors with it they all dine directly right onto the running river.

At that heart about all within Kibune is something which might or may must just simply become that Kibune Shrine , by which that might will appear especially and be well famous as with good power! And because to honor those deities and so for being something in return of nature for one, where visitors can stop over where is, you understand, ask over about those and just to pray. Literally Kibune is that which really makes one of unique experiences by Kyoto is where they really provide with lots of nature vibes from where everything begins here.

Usually the streets here can seem more than just it gets with the other portions off by one of where it gets filled mostly while lots of local shops but is just as all by giving by it that kind small atmosphere about there being always available! Next while can always enjoy it, where those local treat along its side where some those small coffee stores may probably exist there here next along through lots through this place Kibune after you have come through the end over that walk. Of course there is one kind or any alternative which should give everyone else where you all simply go and visit there somewhere so through other spot and just you simply be going with those stream there!

Eventually and by leaving Kibune, really a bus may probably head just down just down up through Kibuneguchi Terminal Bus Station which you would see something from it through by where through the ways by one train back towards where to that urban location throughout. First Kibune combined at about with those walking experience with what comes next from Kurama is that I may really should probably recommend really, or really any one who does can explore some serene vibe by outside far more than those spots off somewhere in that bigger location from Kyoto, so that would eventually be something to expect in any moment too.
