Krk Golden Bay & Blue Cave Cruise: A Detailed Review
Planning a visit to Krk, Croatia? Like you, I did loads of digging for fun stuff to do. As a matter of fact, the Krk Golden Bay & Blue Cave four-islands cruise popped up, and let me tell you, it seemed almost too dreamy to pass up. Is that right? We are talking, unbelievably glistening waters, a mysterious cave, and a good opportunity to island hop – basically all the things that make a holiday feel special. Well, anyway, I’m going to go through my entire experience, so that you can judge whether it would make sense for you to take a punt on it, too.
What to Expect on the Krk Four-Island Adventure
You’re probably curious about what this cruise actually involves, aren’t you? Basically, the adventure sets off from Krk Town. Actually, there are other departure spots depending on which tour operator you’re looking at booking with. We boarded a super ship (well, reasonably-sized, still very pleasing), along with, you know, lots of other folk that seemed as thrilled as me. The itinerary typically features spots such as Golden Bay (naturally), the Blue Cave, plus, two or three of the beautiful surrounding islands.
The boat trip has all the ingredients of the Mediterranean way of life in it. You will more or less feel that laid-back attitude the moment the anchor goes up. Now, that depends on who is on board, the vibe tends to be casual. Typically, there will be swimming breaks in tucked away coves, chances to just get sun-soaked up on the deck, and maybe even some local vino to buy from the staff on the ship. It’s really a day created to wind down while taking some quite magnificent coastline in, I think. And yes, that is what you probably want to do on vacation.
Golden Bay: A Beach Bum’s Idea of a Dream
Oh my, Golden Bay. That’s a name that pretty accurately reflects its shimmering sands and unbelievably sparkling seas, it’s almost as if it was planned. And, in some respects, this spot totally met those high hopes. Very little beats the feeling of stepping onto that stretch of the shoreline from the boat and feeling that sun beating down on your skin. What you get here is a really great spot for unwinding, capturing fantastic photographs, and simply feeling that gentle splash from the shallow tides coming and going.
This beach is that perfect blend of secluded but well worth a visit. I would have to say, though, just remember to bring beach shoes, because getting from the boat to the bay might be tricky underfoot with only flip flops, so make sure you get the memo about it, too. On the other hand, you may consider getting one of those waterproof phone pouches: the one time I visited, loads of people were snapping pictures whilst actually standing in the sea – so I can imagine this beach turns even those camera-shy folks into holiday snappers!
Blue Cave: That Somewhat Mystical Experience
Okay, so that part that grabbed my attention right from the off – the Blue Cave. Well, the Blue Cave of Krk is often visited as part of a cruise of four Islands, but actually it is in its own, secluded bay near a spot that you will know as Klimno. Typically, you are taken into the cave via one of the smaller boats; it’s like your entry ticket into this gem.
Once in, very briefly, you start to see why it is referred to as the Blue Cave. When the sun hits it spot on, there is something really special about how light dances on the water, highlighting the rock walls with this beautiful light, so you have a special light show going on too. Actually, you will often get the option of swimming inside the cave (dependent on your tour), too, adding some more action to the schedule! If you happen to be curious to experience a great Mediterranean marvel, this spot definitely fits the bill, almost.
Island Hopping: Sightseeing by Boat
So, this tour is referred to as being one to four islands; still, there are stops depending on the group you happen to be traveling with, and the specific operator. This leg offers the best view on these lovely islands that make this Croatian location so worth seeing.
We docked at a small harbor, had a nose around in the local area and enjoyed the feel of some of these really peaceful Mediterranean hideaways, which actually gave some food for thought too! And, anyway, the great thing about the island hops on the boat? You get views to make the people stuck back at home pretty jealous. In some respects, the Adriatic is seen to best advantage when viewed directly from the water, and the various islands along the Krk shoreline, are the proof in the pudding.
Food & Drink: Good Times All Round
Right, then. I need to share information relating to catering. Numerous tours provide a food choice for everyone on board. Typically, the deal will feature a fish or meat based choice, yet some may offer vegetarian dishes, too. Now, to let you into a little secret, while these spreads can really hit the spot (the food’s absolutely yummy, really!) the atmosphere with groups sharing food whilst at sea does really add to the whole thing, too.
To be honest, if lunch is extra, then the chances are that there will be something on sale for you at each of the stops. Also, don’t skip grabbing a cold drink onboard too – being on the sea can certainly work up an appetite for you!
What You Need to Bring Along
Packing like a pro for the day out is so important, basically! Here’s the lowdown: Sunscreen. Make sure that is on top of your list. Reapplying sunscreen is especially crucial out on the sea because that sun is pretty deceptive; the breeze just hides it more or less. Furthermore, take a sunhat and eye shades too – anything which stops sunburn is important.
You should think too about those little creature comforts to improve the cruise further. I took along a light beach towel, plus some travel games which me and the folks I came along with all used while we dried off in the sunlight between stops. To tell the truth, you don’t require armbands for the cruise – yet bring them for any youngsters or nervous people along to assist. Just in case the music hits too many bum notes (see what I did there) then whack the ear phones in and have your favorite playlist ready.
Booking Your Trip: Top Tips for Cruise Newbies
So, there are many tour firms in Krk selling island-hopping cruises; well you should not go for the initial provider which approaches. Do what any savvy traveler would and review what the internet says; checking on websites or even via face-to-face discussions in town. What you are essentially seeking is an option which offers solid reviews. Then look to compare what extras you can obtain. Now, there might be lunch choices on offer and even free pickup to bring the costs down. That’s something to think about. Look, early booking also comes with rewards. Reserving in advance – and especially during vacation times – can ensure you land your spot and actually make your day in the sunshine cheaper.
Think very carefully before committing! Read what all the cancellation small print says prior to booking the trip – just to keep your holiday on schedule.
