Kidepo Valley NP: Unforgettable 3-Day Uganda Safari Vacation
Dreaming of Africa? Seriously, if a proper wilderness experience tops your travel list, so you should give Uganda’s Kidepo Valley National Park some thought. Very many people regard this isolated place, virtually sitting on the border with Sudan, arguably, as one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Too it’s almost easy to think it’s just another park, yet trust me, this place will grab your heart. A recent 3-day trip gave me a good chance, too it’s almost to soak it all in. I thought I would scribble down a thing or two, so to paint a clearer picture for those thinking of making the trek.
Getting There and Settling In
So, getting to Kidepo is quite the feat, as I see it. More or less, flying seems like the obvious way, very easily chopping what would be something like a ten-plus hour road trip from Kampala to, basically, a comfortable hour or two. Arguably, that’s what I opted for. That said, there’s some magic that you simply skip by, that is if you opt for skipping the drive; basically, you’d miss all the changing scenery and small towns, that many people often gloss over. Yet, it’s very important to get this point straight. Flying lets you hit the ground running, allowing something of precious extra time that can, perhaps, be used for exploring once you get there. That is to say, consider your time constraints and tolerance for long drives before you opt to drive.
Just, a bit about places to sleep: I decided to set up shop at the Apoka Safari Lodge. I really can’t praise this option enough; Basically, that is not a lie. The lodge provides fantastic vistas, rooms with total comfort, and virtually, an amazing pool that just begs to be used following those lengthy, dusty drives. That being said, for people that are after something friendlier on their wallets, or their purses, then the Kidepo Savannah Lodge seems to get good reviews too; that being said, just expect things to be slightly more basic than those available elsewhere.
Day 1: Game Drive Goodness
After settling into Apoka, of course, I got this sense of eager anticipation when going for my first game drive in Kidepo. Seemingly, with the guidance of a really insightful local guide, that I found at the lodge, we went, basically, right into the heart of the park. Actually, the beauty about Kidepo happens to be that you typically do not have to drive for extended stretches prior to running across any animal sightings. Seemingly, on this day alone, that is saying something. I happened to witness all sorts, too it’s almost as if a wildlife convention was underway – elephants gracefully grazing, lions casually loafing under trees (the lucky chaps!), and the elegant giraffes poking their heads as if straight from supermodel school, and that sort of stuff. Yet, for me, clearly, without question, the highlight would have had to be that extremely rare sight of those cheetahs, since only something like less than 25 live in the park. I was super fortunate enough to be seeing those gorgeous felines strolling seemingly out of somewhere like some fashion parade. Basically, it made this safari beyond worthwhile.
Day 2: Cultural Engagement and Community Vibes
Frankly, while seeing nature and animals stands high up there on one of my things when going to National parks in Africa, then equally intriguing seems to be connecting up to and seeing those local human people. Basically, I organised to stop by with one of those neighboring Karamojong villages. Similarly to the Maasai of Kenya, the Karamojong keep a fairly old, and really interesting culture and so I just really loved learning, clearly, a fair amount, more or less, about their traditions. We also found out tons regarding their community beliefs; I actually got pretty shocked finding out what they strongly stood up for, since what was on their mind simply, perhaps, didn’t cross what I am thinking myself. Getting opportunities similar to these helps broaden things, so one grows a wider appreciation and gets shown another side. Anyway, you have to have it flagged in that you could very likely offer, so this allows for locals to further generate income by way of tourism; So, really, be mindful, while not necessarily going mad, so by offering your helping hand in a little something, it could make life a little better in the villages themselves.
Day 3: Sunrise, Scenery, and Saying Goodbye
Just, getting an early rise lets someone see dawn crack at Kidepo definitely pays. In a way, it seemed like it could make for my very last day and, really, I was sure not to squander just one single moment. Arguably, that orange hue casting shadows on those expansive plains is something out from film; so, with my camera firmly in place, that it was snapping everything I possibly can before having this park and her nature people vanish. After a fast, brief something-to-eat kind of snack, it’s pretty standard and customary for things to culminate to with the final short game drive which, with my occasion, saw those birds getting especially frenzied. Very many were quite lively on that final tour; clearly, the tour was an awesome finish which I felt, too it’s almost was like one little personalized encore which she was presenting merely to send someone, very like, someone akin to myself away with that grin. Then, back at the lodge, came saying byes; a thing that is, clearly, quite the bother, especially considering just how warmly these local professionals treat someone right there. Though, still, things must progress. That said, this awesome safari gets kept well secured, since something very similar, definitely merits those return engagements when something similar jumps along down the way.
Some Additional Insights and Recommendations
Right, with you potentially thinking Kidepo will be coming at some stage when people do their adventures and safaris at Uganda then a little pointer will often make for really sensible guidance:
- Best Time: Very many advise that one should be there in the dry periods which falls when things turn like Dec-Feb and maybe that timeframe covering from approximately June through to August.
