Kaunas is usually called Lithuania’s second-biggest city, though it almost seems to stand in contrast to Vilnius with its own unique personality. One of the cooler parts of the day had to have been, for example, when we explored Laisvės alėja (Liberty Avenue). You see, it is the core street in Kaunas, I suppose you could describe it like the lifeblood running directly through the city. What’s so neat is that it is only for pedestrians! Walking around without cars zooming past, it kind of let you really soak up the atmosphere, maybe? The boulevard features shops and spots to grab a bite. Which made it an awesome place for a wander and a chance for people-watching, for instance. That is, if you like watching people.

Tomas took the time to point out important structures, giving us snippets from their backgrounds and local legends as we moved. The Devil’s Museum was one particular place that he spoke of, and what he spoke of really intrigued the group. This museum’s collection is quite curious because its got thousands of devil figurines coming from across the world! While we didn’t have time on the tour to go inside (too bad!), that has absolutely gone on my list for future trips, I would say.

A major moment was when we explored the Ninth Fort, too. I would describe it as pretty bleak, so to speak. This site serves as a somber, yet major remembrance toward the lives destroyed in the Holocaust. Wandering the grounds felt both, just heart-wrenching, yet also thought-provoking at the same time. Learning about the fort’s grim past makes you mindful about history. To be fair it also makes you more reflective of mankind itself. It’s definitely a location to go to. Prepare yourself for very strong feelings. You probably know what I mean.

Pazaislis Monastery: A serene escape

So, after spending some quality time exploring Kaunas, our tour bus started heading for the Pazaislis Monastery, that is to say, it was located just beyond Kaunas. Right when we showed up there, it felt almost as if we’d stepped into this sort of peaceful sanctuary after all of the bustle and noise, in a way. What really makes this place stand out? In my opinion, it’s all of that Baroque architecture, actually, coupled with how quiet and serene everything seems there. When you enter, you will likely see that it looks pretty impressive and peaceful!.

Tomas described to us how it was established in the 17th century. Plus how it’s, very uniquely, Lithuania’s biggest monastery complex. Stepping foot inside of the church feels pretty awe-inspiring due to its detailed interiors plus calming spiritual energy present. A bunch of the folks in our group chose to light candles or even sit still and contemplate things quietly. Giving everyone some time to breathe a little and have a thoughtful moment. Almost. I feel like I appreciated this part the most.

The landscape enclosing the monastery brings additional appeal. There’s something quite calming regarding the Kaunas Reservoir nearby! I think it adds to this location’s tranquil setting considerably. Taking a slow stroll throughout the premises of the monastery made things more special for me personally, as I could really slow myself down. The area felt truly tranquil.

Food, logistics and what to think about

Okay, here is something pretty important, at least from my angle. Food is usually very essential.
