Jeju Sunrise Tour: Is It Worth the Early Wake-Up? A Review

Okay, so, you’re thinking about doing that sunrise tour thing in Jeju Island, South Korea? Very, very awesome choice! It’s almost a given that, the biggest challenge? It’s the ungodly hour. I mean, that alarm clock rings, and you might think about questioning all your life choices to that point. Anyway, the tour usually begins way before dawn, that’s when everything is so dark it looks like there’s a thick blanket pulled over the Earth. A lot of tour companies will actually come pick you up from your lodging, which, truthfully, is very good because the local roads can be kind of twisty, in a way, especially when it’s so dark you can barely see two feet in front of you.

Once everyone’s piled into the bus, it’s likely you’ll head to whatever viewpoint’s been picked for that day’s sunrise. That might be Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) which is maybe the most well-known sunrise spot, and a place that got itself on the UNESCO World Heritage list – kind of fancy! Alternatively, maybe you go to another great place, like Darangshi Oreum. Oreums are like, Jeju’s little volcanic hills. I will say this: the tour guide knows where they’re going; it’s a lot easier to relax than trying to drive yourself and then find a parking space while it’s basically pitch black.

Seongsan Ilchulbong: Sunrise Peak and its Volcanic Vistas

So, then we arrive at Seongsan Ilchulbong. Basically, it’s this enormous volcanic crater sticking right out of the sea, is that wild or what? Honestly, seeing it in the dark, so it’s just this huge shape against the night sky, gives you like, an initial jolt of excitement. But then, that’s when the climb begins.

And make no mistake, that climb can be a bit much, that’s honest. It’s not K2, of course, it’s still pretty steep and there are what seems to be, roughly a billion stairs. Believe me, at that hour, with limited sleep, each step starts feeling like, it is a mini-marathon. Yet, stick with it, very worth it! All you have to do is think of the payoff – and there’s time to catch your breath on the way.

Eventually, basically you reach the summit and there, if luck is on your side, the sky starts doing its morning thing. What happens, truthfully, is hard to properly explain, but those first colors splashing across the sky are something like magic. After which, as the sun peeks over the horizon, the light floods the entire area, which illuminates the crater and the sea. Seriously gorgeous. This place can get rather crowded, anyway; going with a tour guide who can secure a pretty good viewing spot is super helpful.

Darangshi Oreum: A Sunrise Spot Off the Beaten Path

Now, perhaps the tour decides that you should experience the sunrise from Darangshi Oreum, alright? Then, consider this tour to be a win! I mean, this location is like, less famous than Sunrise Peak, so often it is quite less packed with other people, it’s fair to say. It could be you’re looking for a slightly more peaceful, private experience; then, this location will just be right. Anyway, oreums are these little hills formed by volcanic activity, so climbing one usually is just a little less intense than Seongsan Ilchulbong. So you will get beautiful views with, truth be told, a little bit less of a climb, so what’s not to love?

That landscape all around Darangshi is covered, virtually, with fields and other oreums, giving you what seems to be a very 360-degree panoramic vista. When the sun comes up, then all those curves of the hills light up so incredibly. It’s just breathtaking, especially for anyone wanting maybe something more serene compared to, say, Sunrise Peak.

What Do You Actually *Do* On The Tour?

So, it might be worthwhile to consider that the sunrise viewing bit is really the main thing, arguably. But many tours often tack on additional stuff to make it an actual, proper half-day experience. Often these kinds of tours include, very typically, a local breakfast. Very! Many places will serve something Jeju-specific, just like black pork or seafood stuff. Seriously, that’s a real nice way to sort of, warm up and fill you after you’ve been standing around waiting for the sunrise.

Also, tours sometimes add a stop at places just nearby, right? So, it’s something simple, like a walk along the coast, or perhaps a visit a close-by village so you can glimpse the culture. Basically, those extra parts are what’s really great because that makes it worth it, is that not something?

Also, basically, bring a camera because that sunrise memory’s one you may want to capture!

So, is the Jeju Sunrise Tour really Worth It?

At the end of the day, does sacrificing sleep seem worth it to see that Jeju sunrise? Arguably, yes! I mean, that’s my vote. Not only do you experience amazing vistas that will remain with you, and the experience just includes a bit of that local culture as well. Think of the actual photos you will snap; you will get such bragging rights!

Alright, going on your own *could* seem to be an option; having a tour guide simply wipes out all stress about transportation or trying to locate the greatest viewing spots. All that local information these guides bring definitely boosts the whole deal. Seriously, the early start may feel daunting; viewing that sunrise right at the very top is such a powerful thing to witness.

• Gorgeous Views: Watching the sunrise from either Seongsan Ilchulbong or Darangshi Oreum offers great panoramic views that shouldn’t be missed.
• Cultural Experience: Most of the tours don’t simply bring you there to watch the sun and leave you at that. With many of the tours you actually learn some culture in Jeju with that guide, or breakfast in the village.
• Convenience: Having the transportation completely handled really simplifies your trip, more especially because it will probably still be dark at 5AM when going to see the sun.
