Jakarta Thousand Islands Tour: Canoeing and Snorkeling Review

Jakarta Thousand Islands

So, thinking about a break from Jakarta’s busy streets? The Thousand Islands, or Kepulauan Seribu, might just be the spot. We checked out one of those trips that combines a bit of canoeing and a chance to do some snorkeling. Is it actually any good, you ask? Well, let’s get into what you might experience if you decide to head out there.

Getting There and Initial Impressions

Jakarta boat trip

Okay, first off, is that the tour usually kicks off from Marina Ancol. You know, it’s that place where tons of boats sit waiting. Anyway, getting to the marina isn’t usually too bad, especially if you plan a bit and maybe miss some traffic. Just a heads-up though, parking can get a little pricey, so keep that in mind. Once you arrive at the marina, there is that whole finding-your-boat thing. To be honest, things are maybe not always signposted super clearly, so asking one of the staff usually helps. People usually mill around waiting, with a bit of excitement mixed with the “I hope I’m in the right place” vibe. Very important.

So, the boats themselves, are typically fine. It depends on the tour you book, I guess, but the one we hopped on was okay, in a way. Think “standard ferry” rather than “luxury yacht.” Now, as the boat pulls away, and you see Jakarta shrinking in the distance, there is that slight moment of “Yeah, I’m getting away from it all”. Just make certain you get a seat where you can actually see. Nobody needs to sit staring at a wall for a couple of hours. Also, a heads-up; the journey, so, it’s maybe not super exciting. Think being on a bus but with more water around you.

Canoeing Adventures

canoeing adventure

After arriving on one of the islands, is that then the canoeing part of the trip often starts. You know, the organizers will usually give you a bit of a briefing on what to do, very basic stuff really. Most folks will figure it out, actually. That said, those who have never actually sat in a canoe before might just find it a tad challenging at first. I am only saying this because the canoes can sometimes be a little wobbly, is that right? It’s very fun for a bit. In the event that the water is nice and calm, canoeing around the mangroves can be really rewarding.

But just picture, so, the water is kind of clear, and you see all those tree roots disappearing below the surface. Sadly, this is not always the case. Depending on when you visit, or perhaps the specific spot, the water maybe won’t exactly be crystal clear. Also, if you are hoping to see loads of wildlife, so, too, is that maybe keep your expectations realistic. I just do not want you thinking you will see rare birds and monkeys swinging from trees. Still, getting out on the water and getting a bit of exercise is actually quite lovely, in some respects, even if you mostly see other tourists doing exactly the same thing as you are. That’s it really.

Snorkeling Experience

Snorkeling Experience

Okay, time to get wet, very wet. You know, snorkeling is one of those activities that either gets you or it does not. You, like your, enjoyment will depend massively on visibility. I’m trying to say if the water is murky, then you won’t see too much. However, on a really sunny day, it’s almost like it is fantastic when the sun hits the water, so, is that you can see a surprisingly respectable array of tropical fish. Many colors are actually incredible.

Usually, the tour guides will take you to, just a little, some decent spots. Is that there tends to be a bit of coral around which attracts marine life. Yet, be warned is that some of the coral might be a bit damaged, perhaps because of people touching it or maybe pollution. I hope you do not think I’m trying to put a dampener on things; swimming around in warm water looking at fish is brilliant. And using those underwater cameras everyone seems to have is just very very enjoyable.

One small, but crucial thing: just make certain the snorkeling equipment fits well. Nothing spoils the fun more than water constantly leaking into your mask. I’d definitely try it out when you first get it. Also, many boats are typically crowded, so just a little tip, is that to get your stuff sorted and secure a good spot early on, or something like this.

Food and Facilities

Island lunch

Most tours, often, include lunch. That is pretty standard, actually. The quality of the food can really be variable. Sometimes, it’s surprisingly tasty, local kind of fare. Other times, let’s be brutally truthful, is that maybe it’s edible but not exactly memorable. Usually, you’ll get rice, so, too, is that some chicken or fish, and maybe a few veggies. So it will fill a hole, really. I guess I have eaten worse.

One thing that is always beneficial, very, very beneficial is taking your own snacks and drinks. This is not just in case you are fussy with food, it’s more just generally because you are out in the sun all day and require water. Now, about the facilities on the islands… they tend to be pretty basic. And you should know this. Just be aware that the toilets are probably going to be the “squat” style. Also, is that soap or paper towels are, arguably, something of a luxury. So just a heads up really. Still, it’s all part of the adventure, arguably!

Things to Consider Before Booking

Check the weather

Right then, before you hand over your money for that, actually, tour, here are a few thoughts:
• Weather Watch: Pay close attention to the forecast. Obviously, nobody loves being stuck on a small boat in a storm. Snorkeling will be less appealing too if the water is all churned up.
• Choose your Island: Each island is very individual. Some islands, for example, is that they have better beaches or clearer waters than others. Have a good look at some reviews and try to figure out, at the end of the day, which one you like. Is it suitable for you?
• Check Inclusions: Figure out just what is included in the cost. You, like your, are looking for the boat transfer, food, snorkeling gear, and maybe any island entrance fees. Find this out before to try and not have any hidden costs. You will hate those.

Is It Worth It?

worth it

Okay, the biggie question is it something to bother with? The Thousand Islands tour including, actually, canoeing and snorkeling can actually be a welcome break from the Jakarta mayhem. If you go there with realistic expectations, there are aspects that could make it lovely. Just being out on the water and seeing something, you know, slightly different is enjoyable. I mean come on.

Yet, very important, be aware of a few issues: some places perhaps do require some more care and attention. Do I think the trip would be suitable for everybody? No. I do not. Is it great for those keen on, very, keen on water-based activities. Or maybe someone that just loves a break from the hustle and bustle. But make certain to look at those weather forecasts. And a little consideration when choosing your island will probably pay dividends. And do not expect crystal clear waters! Okay.
